I really really wanted this bag for my new laptop and asked for it last Christmas before I'd even bought the computer. Not only is it as small as possible (I hate big bulky bags, I want one the laptop can barely fit in) and super protective, it is bright orange and I love bright orange.

I don't really do messenger bags because I have really small shoulders and the strap always slides off. Also if they get heavy I end up buckling to the side when I walk and hurting my back.

Mind you I do carry a shoulder bag day to day but it is pretty small and has a thinnish strap. Also I can only carry it on my right shoulder.

EDIT: Jacob I really like that backpack, I tend to shy away from backpacks because I can never find one that isn't black/sporty/way too girly.

I actually want to get a vintage suit, from back in the day when a suit and coat were everyday wear for normal people that weren't working on a farm. I can't find much on the various styles, though. Anyone know where to find information on inter-war-era suit fashion? It will probably be a while before I can afford one, but I really want one, especially if I can figure a way to hide the fact that I have long hair.

I am a guy in desperate need of shoes. I have one pair of very nice shoes that I dare not wear regularly for fear of ruining them, but otherwise all my shoes are too casual to be worn for anything even remotely formal. This is a problem. I need some nice, reasonably smart shoes to wear when I feel like dressing up a bit, and I'd really like any suggestions you folks might have.

You're probably looking for something double-breasted. Man, I hate double-breasted suits. Apparently they're coming back in style? I heard this statement maybe two years ago and am yet to see it in popular culture. Thank god.

As an unfortunate aside, two of my suits were purchased during the time in the early 2000's when three button suits were awesome. Luckily all my sport coats are two button.

I think double-breasted suits coming back has the potential to be a wonderful thing if it was only taken up by people for whom it actually makes sense i.e; dudes with broad shoulders/tummies who got kind of left out in the cold by the slim-cut two button craze. Double-breasted is a very particular look.

Double-breasted isn't going to work for me. I have to stand twice to cast a shadow, as the saying goes. I know I've seen some single-breasted suits in period pieces that grab my attention, but I can't recall which movies at what points well enough to find more details. That was why I was hoping to find a website or something similar with information so I can find pictures more easily and know what to look for.

If you're thin and you've got a little bank for something choice, in ascending order of expensiveness, look at Hugo Boss and Zegna.

I don't know a really good website for suits, to be honest when I want to buy a suit I go to a store with a good selection, bring a girl or a guy whose style I like for second opinions, and try on suits. I'm pretty normal sized so I've never felt the need to go for bespoke, but that might be something you want to look into if you're oddly proportioned.

Don't go for three button, though. It's not really a classic look like a two button. The two button suit has never really gone out of style. Sometimes it might not look as good as the current fashion trend, but it never looks as bad as those 5-10 years later (which a good suit should still be hanging around through). Also, avoid pleats on the trousers. Pleats only make sense if you're fat.

Also double-breasted things actually are not good for guys who are not fit or skinny, because while it may look a little odd on skinny dudes, guys with broad shoulders will look broader and more like a barrel, short guys will tend to look shorter (unless very well tailored), and it is very unforgiving of a beer gut because the buttons and extra fabric across the front creates breadth. This is why the fashion advice columns in Cosmo tell plus-size girls not to wear double-breasted pea coats.

Also I would fuck that guy in the Zegna suit.

Awww you made the mannequin in the Boss suit feel lonely. Capybaras in suits with martinis... why does that exist? Well I'm glad it does. Another thing to note about the capybaras is that they are wearing French cuffs with cufflinks. Cufflinks are an easy way to class up a cheap boring suit and you can get a really nice sterling silver pair for all of $50. What we are basically trying to say is copy the capybaras.

Exactly. It's only a practical consideration if you're fat, because the pleats allow a place for the fat to go, while still having a waist that ensures your trousers won't constantly be falling down.

p.s. Capybaras are wearing tuxes. Double breasted tuxes don't make any sort of sense. Hell, I barely accept two button tuxes.

Pilsner, are those old-fashioned suits? I really can't tell, which is why I was hoping to find a vintage clothing site that wasn't aimed at women that I could learn from. I'm not all that fond of suits in general, but for an old-fashioned suit, especially with a trench coat and a fedora or trilby, I make an exception.

Dovey, I just noticed that in your first picture of doing it wrong, the guy's suit jacket doesn't fit him at all. The shoulder seam hangs off of his shoulder by at least two inches, and he could hide a 50-pound bag of flour under that coat without disturbing it in the slightest.

Nodaisho: Those aren't old suits but they are very old-styled. Pinstripes and a three button jacket which is longer than normal, has very built-up shoulders and tapers in severely is very much reminiscent of between-wars styling, like you asked for. Also consider cuffs on your pants.

Naw man, they're from the last few seasons I think. Like I have a Boss that is basically identical to the one in the picture that I bought 4 years ago, and a Canali very similar to the Zegna in the picture that I bought 3 years ago. Men's suits, at the high end, don't really change that much year to year. Here's a mock vintage Mad Men suit being sold right now if you want to compare.

I'm not really a big Brooks Brothers fan, but to be honest, you could do a lot worse than the Mad Men suit.

Honestly I hate wearing cufflinks. I've more or less given up on wearing all of the shirts I own with french cuffs because of it. I prefer to only have maybe an inch and a half of sleeve showing out of my jacket at most and cufflinks tend to mess with that + they get in the way when I am trying to do things + it is just my aesthetic preference to have a round profile which conforms to the wrist rather than the squarer look of french cuffs.

My favourite shirts tend to have two button closures on the cuffs, for that extra fitted feel + it looks better when you roll up yr sleeves which I do a lot.

I also think pinstripes are never, ever good ever. I think they make any suit look cheap, regardless of actual cost. They're gaudy, and to me being gaudy is anathema to why you would wear a suit. But then, as previously stated I'm very conservative on these matters.

Perhaps, but I've found it's not long until you're heading into exception that proves the rule territory. I've seen some suits with pinstripes that look pretty alright, but then again, I've seen plaid suits that were pretty nice. The common denominator is that shit was damned near imperceptible.

For all practical purposes I really do tend to side with Dovey on this one. I've never really felt like pinstripes made the suit but I have seen ones that were basically murdered by bad striping. I just stay away.

On the topic of suits:

If you're buying off the rack, do NOT pay attention to brands. 95% of RTW suits come from the same production line, and then the supposedly 'high end' brands jack up the price. Look at everything on it's own merits, not on the label it's got.

And as far as pleats go, they do not necessarily make you look fat. They will make fat peoples weight problems readily apparent, but if it's well fitted and you've got a good enough figure, a nice forward pleat or two (reverse pleats are dog shit) brings a touch of class and style that a flat front will not. Note that pleated pants are supposed to be high waisted, you're supposed to wear them at the natural thinnest point of your body, not on your hips as has become the style with pants. If you wear them on your hips your ass WILL take on astronomical proportions.

[edit] Also cuffs on trousers are excellent and more people should realize this.
