Problem is he has no idea what he'd actually like to wear. I remember a long while back some good men's fashion blogs were posted. Anybody have any clue as to the names of them? I'd like to show him some of those so he can get an idea of what he'd like to look like. Also, anybody know any good clothing stores for a overweight dude? We were looking around at Banana Republic, but he freaked out because of the cost and because he thinks they don't have anything in his size.

It doesn't really get much cheaper than BR for adult clothes unless you get crap at the GAP or something. Your best bet is to drag him to an outlet or last call place -- I don't know where to go in Illinois but I imagine there are about a hundred places like that in Chicago if you're anywhere close to there. I'm thinking of something like Filene's Basement or Century 21 in Boston and New York. The men's sections in places like that are usually a lot less picked over than the women's especially in the larger sizes.

You might have to offer him something special to induce him to go though. Yes, I think you know what I'm talking about.

Guys, he is interested. He is the one who suggested it when I told him I had no idea what to buy him.

In general, I think spending more than woot prices of shirts scares him. He rarely spends any money on himself. It's not like he couldn't afford it, dude is a programmer at a genome center. He makes good money. He just needs to overcome his fear of actually spending his money on himself.

Which I guess, is why I have to buy him clothes this first time around.

ETA: We're supposed to both start going to the gym soon, so maybe that will stop his freaking out about sizes.

Be warned, nerdy guys can get really into clothes sometimes. It's like our personalities are set so that we are either completely uninterested, or hopelessly obsessed. If he's walking around in a cream cashmere cable knit sweater and blue collared dress shirt with tan corduroy slacks and matte brown leather laceless shoes this time next year, just remember that you brought this on yourself.

Pretty much this. Less than three years ago, I didn't care about my clothes at all, I would wear just about anything but shorts (people with my complexion and level of body hair should not be wearing shorts), at some point shortly before I started reading this thread, I slowly started to care more, to the point of wanting to get some shirts I liked better and some boots, and now I look in here all the time, have five jackets in regular rotation, am looking to get a sweatshirt, look for excuses to dress fancy, and almost always have my eyes on something new besides band t-shirts (which I never can have enough of).

I have just recently become victim to this odd nerd-fashion enthusiasm. I look back at the crap I would wear even a couple of years ago and want to beat myself over the head. These days the only thing that stops me buying every nice thing I see is a lack of funds.

Oh God this so much. I blame you, Q.C. Forums.

Anyway, Emaline, about the cost thing, it's kind of lame I know, but it really is just a matter of having to accept that this is what things cost. Of course, a lot of the time spending more money means you are paying for quality and that will translate into clothes that last longer and may end up saving you money- emphasis on may, of course.

Also, there's always thrift stores, but as has been noted previously in here, thrift shopping means trading cost for effort.

Also, more blogs!:

A Suitable Wardrobe- Probably fits more into the "aspirational" category than actual practical advice.
The Selvedge Yard- not completely fashion oriented, but what posts it has are very good. Also all the other stuff is wicked manly and interesting anyway.

I have a few filson items, including one of their field jackets with the zip in moleskin vest liner. Its a nice jacket, but its heavy as fuck and gets hot easily. It got replaced a couple years ago by a black peacoat for cold weathe rwear. Unless I'm hunting or doing work around my parents cabin in the winter.

Alternatively, it's winter! You can get away with hats more in the winter. I wear a plaid bomber hat that I know looks ridiculous but it's warm, sooo warm. While my cheeks and forehead are not getting frozen, I can laugh at those sans hats who probably have an ice cream headache at that point.

I'd say something about wearing red wings before it was cool here, but that seems kinda sketchy considering that you could say the same thing about by dad, my grandfather and a whole shit ton of people that routinely work harder than my sorry ass.

Plus, I'm from Minnesota and have family that works at the company, so I've gotten a discount a few times.

Huh. Are you actually noticing people wearing that style, or just seeing it in store windows? Because I have seen absolutely nobody doing that, and I live in Colorado as well.

Ha, I'm with Alex on this one too. Most guys I grew up with wore lots of flannel (only baggy; it was like grunge never died) and red wings because they were farm boys. I even had my first pair at 18 (that is five years ago holy crap) for my summer job.

Does flannel lining count? I had some awesome flannel-lined jeans and have a flannel-lined red button-down that I wear when I need to look like a respectable member of the community but a dark-colored dress shirt and slacks aren't appropriate.

I probably had some flannel when I was really little, but I grew up in the 90s, and most of my clothes were hand-me-downs. I like flannel for warmth, but a lot of the time that you would need warmth around here, you would also need it to be warm while wet, and cotton just doesn't do that.

I have a ten year old Carhart jacket that gets worn in all but the most frigid temperatures. It's really a whole lot warmer and more durable than it looks. So despite the fact it makes me look like total white trash, I wear it all the time. One of the best buys I ever made.

Flannel sheets are the BEST. Jersey is second.

I have owned flannel shirts. Of course, yeah, it was in the 90s and stuff, but I'm sure if I found a flannel shirt in some non-obnoxious plaid, I would probably buy it. I don't really have anything against it - it's warm and soft. But I still would rather have the flannel on my bed than wearing it.
