Checked fabrics tend to suit me. I don't usually wear checked shirts but checked dressed, blouses and so forth have often been part of my day-to-day wardrobe and a friend has commented that "plaid" (she's Canadian) suits me. I'm not keen on the type of shirt that Andy is wearing buttoned up, although it looks good over the t-shirt, but that doesn't mean no one ever looks good in that pattern.

Andy, your pictures only prove Tommy's point, and I agree. That looks terrible.

Also, argyle is not the same as plaid. Neither is gingham. Those BR models aren't wearing plaid.

Also, I already bought the sweater on BR model one for the bf, but I was wanting more of a dark brown blazer for him. I think the black might be too dark, but it looks fine on the model. But my boyfriend always wears black, thus the buying him new clothes, so I kinda wanted to get him away from that. Thoughts? Is dark brown gonna look ugly/too wash out?

Plaid and tartan are effectively synonyms in the US, and argyle is derived from a clan tartan. Gingham is a type of fabric, it's just usually checkered.

Basically, my point here is that tartan derived patterns can be pretty alright.

I thought tartans were spaced further apart than plaids? This may just be me talking out of my ass, but I swore that's how they looked.

ETA: Yes, talking out of my ass. Plaid is the cloth worn over the shoulder, tartan is the pattern.

I have two plaid shirts I like.

That one is brighter than that photo suggests and has more purple in it and the other one I have is a grey, lilac, and white plaid (mostly grey) tunic. I don't think all plaids make you look like a lumberjack or that wearing plaid is a bad thing, unless it's a really obnoxious pattern or combination of items.

Also, if you're wearing your family tartan, that's a totally awesome thing and if someone makes fun of you for it, they are a dick.

I swear if plaid becomes like The Great Shorts debate I'm just going to give up on you guys. Emaline, it is not that hard to find men's shirts, there must be a men's shop in your town/city also BR/Club Monaco/Zara/etc are all good options for mid-range priced men's clothes. I am pretty certain that they don't stock anything in plaid in those places unless it's one or two pieces, they usually just have solids and the occasional stripes.

My boy and I both have wardrobes that encompass a lot of plaid. Not so much flannel, because it's silly to wear flannel in Australia most of the time. I tend to prefer lighter cotton shirts. They're so comfy! And they add a touch of colour and interest to my pretty boring wardrobe.

Hey guys, I want a fancy lighter. I smoke a lot of different things pretty often and I've never lost a shitty drugstore lighter so I feel like it's not a bad idea.

I once had a $30 brass-plated "slim" Zippo of the common variety. They feel cheap and the polished surface gets scratched easily. I'd rather invest in a nicer, more expensive lighter that will last but I haven't ever really heard of any other options, discounting antique table lighters and shit that run in the many hundreds of dollars.

Something simple, elegant, and preferably gold or brass over silver. I like the Zippo flip-top design, just not the quality. Ideas?

Holy shit no do not listen to him. If it's nice silk, applying the iron directly will at best make it look really shiny, and most likely singe it.

The trick is to lay it flat on your ironing board, put a towel over it and iron the towel. It will take some experimenting to see which steam setting on the iron will be effective.

Also nice silk ties should *never* be washed. They should be dry cleaned by good dry cleaners.

I don't mind Zippos if someone can convince me that they're not all junky quality like the one I bought on St. Mark's Place for 30 bucks.

I wouldn't even mind keeping this lighter for home use. I have a gorgeous wooden pipe in a pretty carved box and I could keep it in there.

But the dandy in me wants one regardless.

Yup, that certainly is what pressing is. And it's perfectly acceptable to hand wash many silks.

Of course it depends on the type of the silk in the tie. I'm thinking of the shiny silks you normally find in business ties. A matte silk will be a lot more durable to conventional washing.

Yeah, it can be a pain to hand wash silks and if you don't do it right it can bugger things right up, but I figured if he was going to get it dry cleaned he wouldn't have to press it anyway. I wouldn't use laundry detergent if I were hand washing it though, I'd opt for shampoo instead.
