gene you will lose a nicer lighter. bics will always stay with you. zippos will never stay with you. that is the rule of the universe.

i mean i know you said you didnt want a zippo specifically but im pretty sure law of zippos applies to all sorts of nice lighters. especially if you drink.
I've actually found myself losing bics really easily, probably because they are so small that I forget they are in my pocket, and if I had a zippo it would be larger and I would be able to comfortably carry it in my hip pockets. I'm not comfortable doing that with one that has an exposed fuel trigger, I don't want to get lighter fuel all over my crotch and electronics.

My friend has a butane zippo-ish lighter, he hasn't lost that one other than periodically in his room. I'm pretty sure that when he carries it, he also carries a cheap bic, though, because he uses something else to light off fireworks or let someone borrow.

I do want a zippo, I've been looking at these two: 1, 2. Maybe this one, but I think I like the Venetian pattern better. The problem is deciding which color I want. I like the clean look of the chrome one, but the brass would go better with just about anything I wear when trying to look respectable.

I had a nice zippo once. They are pretty cool and mostly pretty durable as long as you don't treat the thing like shit. If you decide you want to do lighter tricks then you will probably wear out the hinge on it and it will snap after a while. The upside of it is that you will look super classy all the time and a chrome or brassy one will look good almost all the time. I'm thinking of getting a chrome and black one but I'm trying to find one that doesn't have ninja star or tribal motifs which is kind of hard apparently. The biggest downside of zippos is that they make the first drag taste of lighter fluid so be aware of that when you buy one.

So, in lieu of a better option, I narrowed it down between these two Zippos.

The first one is a big more regal while the latter is sleek and very Mad Men. The steel one comes with a 3 letter monogram option. Is that tacky or cool?

It's kind of awesome actually. I would probably prefer to get a word or phrase engraved into it but monograms are cool too. I'd go the steel, I find the first one a little too ostentatious for my tastes.

I said it in Meebly but I'd like to restate that monograms are classy as shit and you should definitely do that.

Actually I really don't like gold but if you could get the first lighter's patter in steel I would totally do that.

This one close enough to steel for your taste Dovey?

Gene, the reason it looks mad men is because it has pinstripes. Think about whether you want pinstripes.

Actually it would be:

I don't like full size Zippos; they're clunky and not ergonomic at all. So slim all the way.

The Venetian (the regal option) is decorated on both sides with that engraving. I'm afraid the Ribbon one is not, or at least I can't find any information to confirm it.

I just got a poet friend of mine a gold zippo with the first line of "La Belle Dame Sans Merci" engraved on it for Christmas!

And a plaid 50's style button up for another friend!

And 100 Years of Menswear for a third friend!

Look how topical my xmas presents are.

But seriously zippos disappear like a motherfucker.

The large ones are better than the slim ones though, slim ones look like some kind of futuristic sex toy.

I don't know why you would ever get one that wasn't a solid color.

to date i have lost two zippos. the second one will probably be found again but the worst part is i didn't even get to use it, i just lost it as soon as it was given to me (leading me to believe its stuffed in my room somewhere.) (still lost though)

It really comes down to a few things:

1. People like to swipe lighters, the bastards.

2. Zippos are just cheap enough to be careless with and just expensive enough for it to be irritating when you realize they're gone.

i have misplaced my wallet and mp3 player dozens of times and always gotten them back, miraculously. strangers have actually gone so far as to google my name to get my stuff back to me. even though i am careless as hell it seems i consistently have really good luck when it comes to hanging on to my shit.

i did lose my pen today though which i am kind of bummed about because a few years ago i decided i would only buy expensive pens (in the $5-$10 range) so that i would actually be upset when i lost them and, thus, would learn how to hang on to them. it actually worked and i had this one pen for like three years and counting, i used it almost every day and just kept buying refills every few months. then today i gave it to a customer to sign a form and realized way too late that he never gave it back! this sucks. that pen was so great, now i am back to cheap pens i guess.

Plaid and tartan items of clothing are always better if they aren't plaid or tartan. It always looks sickeningly kitsch, overly busy and just plain irritating to behold. You can take any decent item of clothing and giving it that style of pattern makes it look like you are trapped in a terrible 70s time bubble of chronic bad taste.

Lose the plaid. All of it. No exceptions. Go now.

Oh Tommy.

You're just so cute. But will you ever learn?

I think what we are witnessing is the fallout of the politicization of Burbury.

Happily on this side of the Atlantic, no one knows what a "chav" is.  What would be great is if we could stop pretending that we are the evangelists for a platonic aesthetic ideal we have more or less exclusive access to, and use more phrases like "I think", "In my mind" or "I personally would never wear".

You had to pick the worst plaid you could find, didn't you. I bet you could mention any kind of style or pattern, and it would be possible to find an awful version of it. The shirts people have posted in this thread have had two or three colours that looked good together because they weren't strong colours, or one was a strong colour and the other wasn't. Usually when it comes to any kind of fabric you have to make the focus point either the colour or the pattern. All of those examples of plaid are either mixes of really loud colours or mixes of colours that doesn't go well together at all. If you avoid this, plaid can look good imo.

I don't mind being serious, but being too serious. Talking in absolutely absolute absolutes about stuff some like and some don't. I can accept stuff like "I hate plaids to hell and back" but not "Plaids suck". The first is an opinion, the second is a statement. The asshole part is a statement about stuff done on the interent which exaggerates my opinion about the stuff you've written here. I wrote it like that because I've read it somewhere else like that.
