My dad is teaching me how to do oxy-acetylene welding.

THIS WAS AWESOME. We welded some parts up, and we used them to fix the gate that had broken off of the fence during the Vicious Winds that have been fuckin' shit up all over California. I learned that galvanized steel is annoying to weld because the zinc coating will transform chemically and vaporize into something that not only smells fucking vile, but also has effects that are really unpleasant in your body. The good thing is that I did not learn this the hard way.

Also, a friend of my friend Logan has started helping me out with my resumé. He used to review incoming resumés for Apple, and so he knows a thing or two. The more time I am spending with good people, the happier and more optimistic I feel about, well, everything.

Love,
Me!

Just got back from seeing the Decemberists. Holy shit they put on a great show. Colin Meloy really knows how to work a crowd. They played only two songs, maybe even only one, from the Hazards of Love, which suited me just fine (I can't be sure of the exact number because I'm not really familiar with that album, intensely disliking it as I do). They also played a cover of "Bye Bye Pride" by the Go-Betweens!! Which goes some tiny way to easing my endless regret at not going and seeing Grant McLennan & Robert Forster performing together when I had the chance (which was more than once).

I've been to great gigs four out of the past five nights: Charlie Parr on Thursday, Slow Club at my local pub/live music venue on Friday, a free gig by Oliver Mann on Saturday afternoon followed by Camera Obscura being supported by Slow Club (again) in the evening, and the Decemberists tonight. British Sea Power and also the Pixies (!) playing Doolittle (!!) are still to come.

Good gig year.

After reading through most of the night and then a good bit of today, I finished The Gathering Storm. It was amazing. I knew the plot would pick up now, towards the end, and I knew that Sanderson is an excellent author (I read Elantris), but I didn't expect me to get so involved. When things was looking bad, I hoped that they would get better. I don't think I've read anything as good since I finished The dark Tower. The conclusion in particular was pretty damn deep, and explained a good bit about the universe. I can't wait for the next one.

I spent the weekend on a camping site, playing bloodbowl. That was a lot of fun, there's quite a few things that makes playing the thing live, face to face, more exiting than playing it online. Of course, it was what we call a "sausage fiest" (try to figure out what that means!), and the nerdyness hung thick, thick in the air. But it was really fun, and I did much better than the older people there had expected - "sure you can play. We'll just have to check your head first. You're playing dwarves" I'll show them. One day, I'll show them.

YOU'LL SEE!

gah im a dick. this girl passed out on my couch, I got her a pillow and blanket, then I went to bed.  I woke up with her in my bed.  She is very affectionate but I dont want to date this girl.  letting her down is going to suck. :|

so that girl I didnt want to date, I think were dating now.  When she sat/strattling me and leaned in for a hug then we made out, then heavy petting and yeah...

my new girl friend never really heard of daft punk so we just watched interstella 5555 and she loved it!

GOD DAMN.  if i had straddled the guy i like who was 'sort of but not really' into me, and then pretended not to know who daft punk was, he would be my boyfriend now?!??  i really regret my whole 'if he liked me he would call me' stance now.  lesson learned :(

So I just found out last night that my mum has diabetes. Which is shit I guess. I'm not sure how I'm meant to feel about this because I don't like my mother as a person that much so I kind of don't feel anything? Other than being not very surprised that something horrible would happen to her health-wise given the conditions she lives in.

I suppose I should probably take better care of myself?

when i found out my dad had hepatitis and that my mom possibly had breast cancer (two separate occasions), i pretty much felt nothing as well because i really don't like my parents at all and my relationship with them is so poor. this is actually the first time i ever told anyone that because it comes off as a very juvenile and spiteful thing to say but in reality it really frightened me quite a bit and made me feel like a pretty terrible person. it is sort of nice to know there is at least one other person who can relate to that.

I felt the same way when my grandmother told me she had lupus. And when a few grandparents died. I think it's ok to feel that way. I mean, if you don't have a good relationship with them, then it is no different than hearing that a stranger died, or a hated enemy.

I also think that if it is something that interests you, then maybe it is time to try to work things out with them. Maybe try to learn more about them.

I have a grandmother that everyone in my family sort of hates. They all actively ignore her. Supposedly she is crazy, and I guess that makes sense. She sometimes sends me clothes with holes and bleach stains and are all kinds of wrecked up, and they are supposed to be her care packages. Recently, she forced a visit on everyone(she called my dad and said she was at the airport and was waiting for him to come pick her up). Everyone talked about how horrible it was that she was there, and nobody wanted to spend time with her. Based on everything everyone said about her, I was weary of meeting her. But we met and she was totally great and awesome and I loved just spending time with her and talking about things.

I know it's not really the same thing, but maybe give them a chance? When people find out they are dying, they try to right the things they have wronged, sometimes.

Reading what some of you are saying, I guess I feel a bit privileged that all my children, including the one living in another country, came to see me within 24 hours of my being in hospital...

Seriously, though, it is worth a little effort trying to see the world from other people's point of view.  Even if you can't agree, you may find that it is possible to understand somewhat.

Dear blag,

I'm polishing the shitfuck out of my resumé right now. There's a few experiences I just remembered about that are pretty extraordinary. I'm writing this as a "fuck YOU" to my fellow poor bastards who are also in the job market in the Bay Area.

Also, I've decided 12/8 (or basically anything in triple meter) is an amazing time signature to write music in. Worked for Elliott Smith.

It's the first week in March, and the last week in February is the ballet show and Varsity. I know I can't commit enough time to the Revue rehearsals and it's such a big deal that I don't want to let them down. I was absolutely gutted though (for anyone who doesn't know, the Footlights Revue launches a ludicruous number of comedians' careers).

I was so gutted, they had been given my name and asked me personally. Why is everything at the same time?! I'm going to go and watch it though and make sure I introduce myself to the producer and director - maybe next year. The good thing is that there are very few committed stage managers here, since you do all the work and get none of the glory, so I've got a good chance another time.

Gah.

In better news, I just gave blood and now I'm off to sprint training. They told me not to do anything strenuous but... I'm sure it's fine. Then I'm going on a swap - that's where two societies or groups go out to dinner together. The ballet club are going to formal hall with the ultimate frisbee team (you couldn't make it up).

Just to further evidence how busy I am, there are five things happening tonight which I should be at, all of them starting at 7pm: two dinners, two dance classes and a rehearsal. On reflection I chose the wrong one.

Finished my resume and cover letter and sent them off to Apple in hopes that they will start paying me to sell their things. Wonder if I'd get an employee discount for Apple stuff if I buy direct from them. Whatever, I'd be happy just to have a goddamn job.

Also I am looking for my dad's headphones so that I can monitor myself while I record myself singing, and it's not working so hot. Kinda annoying, that.

The old dog, Lucy, ran off (possibly chasing the scent of a deer) as soon as I let her off the lead on our usual evening walk.  She vanished into the grounds of a local school, through a newly appeared hole in the fence, and hasn't been seen since - even though she has two flashing light things on her collar.  She has been lost now for over three hours, and as she is old (13 years) and the temperature out is below freezing, she might not survive the night...

[edit] My wife drove out to where I have spent three hours looking for her, and she appeared almost immediately, hardly able to walk because she had got brambles stuck in her fur which locked her back legs together...  But she's fine (though STOOOPID!).

you have been a positive influence overall but maybe not for the right reasons. i did not have a nervous breakdown. i just forgot about something more obvious during my attempts to care about stuff that was never important to me at all.

(See above - she's back)

She has been lost for longer than that, and in the countryside rather than walking from home.  None the less, the older she gets the more worry it is - and the temperature was our main concern this time.

Anyway, she's kept me up late enough, and I'm going to bed now.

Ok, maybe I should have clarified that I want it to be able to be done with my just like, thinking about it. I'm not prepared to put any effort into it.

I'm glad your doggie is okay Paul! The same thing happened to my Suzie. Dad took her out deer hunting with him, with her in the car just riding along and she saw a deer and jump out the window after it. She was as old as your dog, and had bad hearing and bad sight and apparently got lost somewhere. So dad's driving around until ridiculous o'clock when he finally has to go home. For three days every single day my mom and my dad and my uncle and his kids went out looking for her in the area she jumped. We found her after my aunt went to the Gossip Mill and found out "some guy with a dark truck and a topper" had talked about finding a dog in the country and he didn't know what to do about it. Turns out the first night she went to a farmstead and slept in the barn (we think, the person who owned it was gone but that's where the guy found her) and he'd just put his dogs in the back and was about to put the tailgate up when he looks over and there's Suzie with her front paws on it looking all sad, obviously begging him to put her in there too. [edit: this was during deer hunting season, which is in late fall so cold too!]

I cried when they found her again :)

(also right now I'm listen to Langhorne Slim on vinyl and it is SO GOOD and I am SO EXCITED that I get to see him again tomorrow YEAH)

I can expand the definition of that if anyone wants to roll around to my Fortress of Love.

...I meant "edible" but that's such a great typo that I'm leaving it in there.
Glad she made it home safely.

If you hadn't said anything, I would have continued assuming you were playing word games with "invisible" and "hide" as in hide and seek.

Paul, glad to see the happy ending, that's always such a worrying thing to happen.

Today was spent screaming my lungs out to "Overcome" by RX Bandits and writing another cover letter. This cover letter was for the music shop on 1st Street. Good holy god I hope I get hired there. That would be a fucking dream job for somebody like me.

I also learned about Frank Turner. That guy is the fucking man.

My computer stopped working but I fixed it!

I can't remember if I mentioned that I sprained my elbow at derby but I have missed two sessions and it still hurtssss :(  So much hurt.  I can use it now, and I am out of my sling, but I can't put weight on it,or open jars etc, or use a stapler with it.  Regardless I am skating on Saturday because if I miss another fresh meat session I have to do it all over again.  And I don't want to do that!

My boyfriend accidentally headbutted me in the thigh yesterday when we were swimming. I was standing up and he was underwater and ran into it hard!
It has not bruised up but instead the whole area feels sort of swollen and more solid than a thigh usually should. I have a limp! My leg has not stopped hurting for the 30 hours or so since it happened! WHAT IS WRONG

Also I got a really cheap haircut this afternoon and I don't think I like it, I am going to straighten it out and see if it is ok but then hairdressers normally make your hair look a bit crap because they don't know how to do it right

Yes but Lise is a GOOD hairdresser and I am sure her haircuts cost a bit more than $20

Very likely yes. 'Course you could always come over here and have her do it.
