Hi Blog thread!

Awesome news!  You know that amazing unit I applied for?  Well the real estate called today and I got it!  I am so happy!  I will be paying only $20 a week more than I already pay thanks to the boy moving in too!  We move in in a month, now all I need is a new job.

Lately I have been having dreams about my family. I have had two dreams that ended in me yelling at my dad, last night I had a dream where I lost it at both my parents, and just now I had one about my brother. I had a dream that my dad had a twin brother, and the two of them woke me up at 5am to be irritating and make me do gardening or something, and laughing at me because I was grumpy I had been woken up; the twin found everything hilarious, even when I forced dad up against a wall and screamed in his face. Last night the dream was that mum and dad both got super drunk, and mum drove off somewhere to get more alcohol while dad decided to get high; I took his beer away and said he could be drunk or high, not both, then he got super irritating and drunk anyway and I yelled at both of them to grow the fuck up already. This dream was that Ro had been ignoring me all day, and when I turned up to a party/dinner thing of his he had forgotten to save a spot for me and the tables were packed and there was no room, so I swore at him and stormed off.

This is starting to screw with my head, and I don't like it. Can't I have dreams about wearing a jacket covered in drawings of small babies again instead?

man ok i gotta nerd out over this but here's a list of fun ass shit we did at d&d

  • i climbed a ridge to attack a kobold and when i killed him i claimed his skull as my trophy and put it into my inventory
  • one person decided, instead of walking past us, to leap over us and throw knives at a drake across a sludgy underground pool, killing it
  • i tried to leap over the pit but failed the check so i went facefirst into it and got boosted out with the help of someone else's MAGE HAND (after this we found out that you can move through spaces occupied by other players)
  • ok so the chamber with the pool in it was part of a combination wine cellar/old manor tomb, right? and our attack on the drake and kobold in the entrance chamber alerted another kobold guard who pulled a lever that brought an iron portcullis down, blocking our exit. while the four adept fighters went to go deal with a couple stray drakes guarding some treasure in another part of the main chamber, the mages decided to deal with the kobold who brought the lever down. one of them teleported behind the portcullis and then used a thunder blast attack that can push its target back. he asked to do an arcana check and it was successful so the kobold tripped over the lever, opening the portcullis. then the kobold panicked and retreated but it ran down some crumbly stairs, fell thirty feet and died.
  • we beat the hell out of a screaming wraith (ghost of the manor owner - that's what he gets for building a wine cellar on his ancestors' tomb!!!) after determining that our adventuring company's motto was just the word "stab"
  • we couldn't kill the dragon but one of the mages pushed him into the pit that he came from so one of the other party members blasted some of the supports in the chamber and that knocked a massive stone over the pit so the dragon couldn't get back out.

yeah basically d&d totally rules and i can't wait to do it again

I have a story about my cat last night but it's not that interesting so I'm doing it like this.

You are in a large living room with hardwood floors. You are currently sitting on a couch. Next to you is a black cat. In front of you, you see a metal ruler on top of a stool.

> take ruler

You pick up the ruler.

> look at ruler

This ruler is high quality. Unlike many rulers, which lack the 8th inch to save on manufacturing costs, this one has all 12. It's made out of steel! Heavy.

> take cat

The cat is too pointy to pick up.

> look at cat

The cat is all black except for a tuft of white on his chest. His name is Akira. He is glaring at you.

> use ruler on cat

I'm not sure I like where you're going with this...

> tap cat with ruler

You tap the cat on his head with the ruler. He is unimpressed.

> spank cat with ruler

Uh...okay...you spank the cat lightly with the ruler. He begins to purr loudly.

> what

Yeah, really.

Sweet D&D session, dude.  I haven't been able to come up with anything that badass for my players.

On the topic of dreams, I had an interesting one last night where I had to re-take this phenomenally boring and rather useless class that I had taken last semester.  Then I woke up and checked my e-mail for my TA assignments.  Turns out that I'm TA-ing the undergraduate version of that class this semester.  I think it's because I did really well on that question on the preliminary exam.

p.s.  My music writing was always really messy on account of me having super terrible handwriting and not wanting to take extra time to make sure they were okay.  The entire jazz faculty made fun of me for it, but oddly enough the classical guys were fine with it (when I took music theory).

I haven't been paid in a month, and my dog is dying. Woo.

Money problems should get fixed soon. I talked to our accounting guy at work, and he is going to call the place tomorrow. So I'm not super worried about that.

The dog drama is a different story. Basically, I moved from IL to MO, and was living in Overland with my grandma, and aunt, and their million animals. My dog and one of their dogs(who is stupid and fucking vicious and I don't know why they keep it. And I'm not just saying this because of what has happened. That dog has always been like this.) fought a lot. There was blood, and a lot of injuries. It was often about food. My dog is pretty old(12), their dog isn't.

A fight or two into me living there, I moved in with my boyfriend. Without my dog(he lives in an apartment, she is a big dog). I've been living there for the past few months.

Now my dog isn't eating. She is old and frail, and skinny to the point where I can see her bones.

I don't know what to do. I think that if she was in a better enviroment, she'd eat, and be healthy. I can't take her though, and don't know anybody who can. Any animal rescue place will just put her down. I want to take her for at least a week to see if I can get her to eat.

What should I do?

Did you have any experienced players along?

Also: did you enjoy it?

Jens and Kris played D&D with people from the internet. Ultimate Nerdery: Achieved.

Oi. So did I!

Well I'm back from a long weekend in a field. It was very good fun and I got a little bit starstruck when I got the autographs of these guys, who have been my heros my whole life and inspired me to play violin back when I was four. I'm not usually phased by meeting "famous" people but they really were celebrities. I spent an hour queuing to get their autographs, which is almost unheard of at folk festivals (usually you just say hi to the performers in the bar afterwards, but they are too famous and in demand to have time for that kind of thing).

Did lots of dancing too, and my friend who had never been to a festival before had an amazing time so all in all, success!

And now my summer assignment has arrived and I'm about to start it :D

What should I do?

Talk to your boyfriend, take her in temporarily and get her back up to health. Put an ad out in craigslist or something to try find her a new home.
Don't leave her there for another second. No animal should have to live like that. If she's only depressed because of circumstances, then just taking her somewhere else, anywhere else should make a huge improvement.
I hope this one has a happy ending.

So, school's been all back 2'd and so all my friends are all absent from my life besides on the weekends where I make a fool of myself because they haven't been around to make with the conversation/my brain work, so I have decided to occupy my time with a shit ton of literature and music and comic books and video games.  That is, until I get a job (please God please).  The current combination of those seems to be On The Road, Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, Miraclemen, and I'll probably watch a whole bunch of Monster and listen to a whole bunch of Four Tet.  awwww yeahhhh

sick dog

After nursing her back to health for a few days, you could try a no-kill shelter.  I'm not sure where you are in MO, but it might be worth calling one of these?  These sorts of places tend to be spread extremely thin, resource-wise, but they also tend to be the kind of places where people's hearts might be willing to melt for a sad story like yours.

So I just got back from a late dinner with Bryan Beller who is the (touring) bassist for Deathklok.   Both he and his wife are hella cool, and I got a preview (by way of him playing) two songs from the up coming album.    Not to mention hearing him play a bunch of stuff that he plays when he's touring with Steve Vai, as well as a good chunk of his own stuff.

Cliff's Notes:  Tonight was an awesome masters class.  Bryan Beller is a ridiculously good musician and has exactly the right personality to host small clinics.   If you get a chance to see him, do it!

Really fucking depressed today.

Not even depressed really. I feel pretty fine. I stopped smoking weed last week in the hope that it was what has been sapping my motivation lately but I still can't find any compelling reason to do anything productive or take any positive steps in my life whatsoever and it really fucking bugs me because plenty of people get by fine without wanting to do anything with their lives and get fat and maybe squeeze out some kids and I feel like a pompous dick because I gotta be the next Jazzy Jeff or Phillip K Dick or something without actually having any talent or perseverance I just expect to be that fucking great like an entitled piece of shit

auuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugh gonna go watch Star Trek cause it feels less futile to waste my life watching TV set in the future rather than in the past.

To be honest I think it's really more that I've had people telling me my whole life I'm brilliant and would make something of myself one day when the whole time I really just wanted to fall in love and maybe get a dog and live to be 80 and those are all my life goals, really. Now I'm an adult and I haven't been able to achieve those because I've been furtively chasing  a hundred other life goals other people have made me feel bad for not pursuing but never really getting anywhere cause I don't actually give a shit about them and now I don't know what the fuck I'm doing or what I want.

And I've been doing this for so long that I can't tell if this is actually the way things are or whether I'm just so much of a failure that I need to justify it to myself by saying "No my ACTUAL life goals are actually pretty simple because I'm a Zen guy!" and that seems really fucking specious to me.

I know that feeling. It's the "Shit why can't I just be happy as a normal guy" feeling. I get that a lot of the time. People seem to think I should be some kind of genius because I've always got high exam grades, but all I'm actually good at is passing exams, not using the stuff I'm taught. So I keep thinking I should be doing loads of exciting things with my life, and that I'd be a failure if I didn't.

Man, this assignment is interesting but HARD. I've read Hansard before but usually only in small chunks, and this time I'm having to read the entire judgement to get to the actual details. I can only imagine how difficult this must be for people who haven't ever studied law before; it barely makes sense to me and I have a fairly broad, if shallow, understanding of how this stuff works.

Grah. Also my brother is here and he is so NOISY. It's not even that he actually makes noise, he just sort of collects it. Right now he is watching a promo video for a filing system. Earlier he was singing. I like having him around in theory but in reality I cannot concentrate.

Oh man, two days from flying to the UK.

so much apprehension, guys

When does the Uni's term start? I'm just asking because Glasgow have their open day next Wednesday and most of the other unis have their open day when there are no students around.

The weather is throwing hail at my window; in the UK we call this "summer".

What I meant to say is, so how did you react?  As in, what did you say when she said that?  Hopefully it was something smooth.

It should start around the 21st, everything up to then is just orientation I guess?

This is a weird coincidence.

It's the sunglasses.  They cover your eyes and true facial expression.

I can never tell if you are mocking me or not...

In any case I think the beetle/whatever was a stowaway from a bag I left on a friends porch when I was visiting him.  Or some enemy's failed attempt to kill me via poisonous insect.

So, today I woke up at 2 PM, got up, checked my phone, and sat down in front of my PC.

What's the difference between today and any other?
14 hours ago my phone wouldn't stop ringing with people saying "Happy birthday!"

What the hell, friends?

My birthday is over now, well 45 minutes left, I wussed out of the Big One but I did go on the Mad Mouse.
I have bruises from a roller coaster.

Update on dog:

I've talked to my boyfriend and he is still unsure about keeping her with us. They could kick us out. I don't really want to keep her with us for more than two weeks, if she is getting better. I mean, if she improves in the two weeks, I'd like to find a home for her, but if she doesn't, I'd rather her stay with us until she goes because she should get to live out her last moments knowing how much I love her(because she will forever be my best friend).

If she does get better, I'm not really sure what to do. Somebody posted(I'm sorry! I know it was somebody I like, but my brain is all amush right now, and I can't remember your name) a link to no kill shelters, and I'm going to give them a call, but when I originally moved, they couldn't take her. I am afraid of posting her on craigslist because this is St. Louis, home of puppy mills, and I'm afraid of them getting her. I don't want any money for her. I just want her to go some place nice. I am considering posting her, and saying she $200, but then actually meeting with the people and saying she's free. When I get home, I'm going to look for some german shepard rescue places and see if anyone there will take her. Or looking for an older dog rescue place. Basically, at this point, I'm willing to roadtrip out of state for a place for her. I just want her to be happy.

Update on dog:

Oh man I am sorry, Emaline!  Have you checked with any friends who might want dogs in the case that she gets better?  If you gave her to someone who you trust already, you'd be assured that she'd have a good home and people who could take care of her.  It's a pretty shitty situation, but it's good that you're planning for the best outcomes.  I hope your dog gets better.  :|

Excluding my boyfriend, I have two friends. One is going back to Chicago soon, and will live in dorms, so he can't take her. The other lives with her parents, so she can't.

So I got bored doing my linguistics homework and I was making up nonsense words for examples cause it's fun and for some reason the word 'pickaninny' popped into my head so I wrote it down and then half an hour later I realised I'd heard it before and it was a real word. I went to look it up and it turns out its actually pretty racist and now my linguistics professor probably thinks I am some racist lunatic.
