On Magic.
I haven't played for probably a decade now, but every couple of years, I go out and buy a couple boosters anyway, just so my mind is blown by the cards that are out these days. It's really amazing the way the balance of power shifts from set to set as the designers tinker with things. Back in my day, I always thought the vast majority of creatures were honestly pretty laughable; DD X-spells, instants and obscenely powerful deck manipulation were more my style. I probably only played with like, 5 or 6 critters in my deck, at most, and why shouldn't? I could always rifle through my deck and deploy them at an instant; such was the power of Demonic Tutor and blue's stupidly powerful card drawing ability. My friends were actively surprised when I played a white deck with 16 creatures in it once rather than wipe the board and clock 'em with a finisher. I imagine it is still like that in that weird monstrosity known as Vintage play, except by now they probably don't even fuck around with critters at all.
But in standard? I remember the day I cracked open a pack and found out that Incinerate and Lightning Bolt had given way to some shit called Spark, and that Drain Life isn't even around anymore. And who the hell is this Masticore douche bag and where does he get off on costing 4 mana?
