Short version of draft office story:

"pacifist, huh? Would you defend yourself if someone tried to kill you?"

"Well, sir, yes, but there's a difference between idealistic pacifism and practica..."

"Bullshit. You're fit to join. Welcome to the army, son."

This sounds familiar...

Just like Slick said, I was pretty anti-draf when I was in highschool. But today I have about six more months to my three year service and I'm having a pretty good time. Also I moved around a bit in the army so I got to do all kinds of stuff without actually being shot at. I'm guessing that in a few months I'll get offers to stay for a few more years, and I might take them. Great way to pay for school. Just don't tell them you vote left. I still get shit for that.

Jeans, I know you're thinking that volunteering somewhere would be more helpful, and it probably would (I was going to do the community service thing too), but if it's only a year then what's the harm? You'll make friends, basic training is surprisingly helpful is real life and trust me, snow is way better then this. On the downside, you'll get little or no sleep, and have no free time.

allison i hope your canlit class is going well because mine Fucking Sucked and made me Hate Canadian Literature

Mine was basically the same experience.  Except I liked Susanna Moodie (some other things were pretty ok).  It was also all older Canadian literature, and my professor seemed to be really in to Freud and phallic images and it was just a bad scene.

Did you read anything you liked?  And what've you been reading, Allison?

ALTERNATIVE JOKE:

There is, but it's almost impossible to tell it from American literature.

My experience with the army draft lasted for half an hour. I purposely screwed up all the tests I could, I fell asleep during the introduction movie. During the interview part the officer took one look at me and my medical record, came to the conclusion I was more trouble than I was worth and told me to get lost. Got travel expenses but I had those covered so I basically got enough money for two packs of camels.

Would have had to go to jail if they wanted me. Because no way, no how am I going to be someone else's killing machine.

Poor Jens. You don't even have bad eyesight you can get out on?

You could also do the thing my cousin did. He switched around in the service and ended up being the guy who put up the command tent whenever the defence minister was going for inspections and other kinds of work involving moving stuff around for someone. The shrink got him out of duty after four months or thereabouts.

What I'm saying is that you should think about getting mentally ill.

My rent was raised today... only by $25, but I am not exactly rich and I'm paying for half a room with half a closet.  Put that on top of the $2500 to pay for my dental work, and then my other regular bills and I'm pretty damn broke.

On the plus side, I found out today that I can go to the circus on the 17th!  I bought tix ages ago, but my boss wanted to have an event that day and I almost sold the tix.  So glad I held off.

Because no way, no how am I going to be someone else's killing machine.

I don't know precise statistics, but I'm going to say from my experience talking to people, about 90% of people in the military these days are not involved in the killing side of military during a conflict.  0% are involved during peace time.  I've known a number of people who have served/are serving and every one of them says they have had no moral qualms about it.  Some of them have been miserably bored, but they hope to keep that way.  The key is to do something that isn't infantry.

so blog thread i am pretty nervous/not stoaked about this weekend.

we are doing an overnight marching band trip to allentown pa for some big marching band tournament. this is our big event for the season. the problem is, since im in the pit, i'm partially responsible for the electronics. bass, guitar, piano, and most importantly, vocals. however, we have terribly inconsistent sound equipment. sometimes it just doesn't work. recently we haven't had a performance with sound problems but for these two shows we have a minute to set up. a minute. and if we mess this up i am probably going to disappear from the face of the earth. i really dont wanna go on this trip and im even more worried we might have a sound problem.

however, if everything goes well, the next two game preformances are a joke and i dont have marching band next week at all and i am SO STOAKED about that. hopefully everything goes well this time.

I spent the weekend with Yelley! She came out on Friday night and we ate some food and then the next day we joined my friend Jess and went out to Rocky Mountain National Park, where the air was cold and thin and difficult for Yelley to breathe, but it was a good time. We got back and then ate again, and watched Princess Mononoke. I think Yelley has some pictures that she might put up soon!

She also made me an alpaca scarf and it is super boss.

Magic playing

Ugh, fucking Magic the gathering. fucking fuck. The set has not been out 1 full week and I've already got a deck built to near perfection. Mind you I didn't spend any money on my cards (store credit and hell of trading). Now we're gonna nerd out real quick here for those of you in the know. I bought 9 booster packs when I got to the store with my friend jonny. I pulled out 3 mythic rares from those 9 packs. I traded one of them, Sorin swampguy, (along with 3 other cards) for a fat pack (8 boosters) and out of the fat pack, I pulled a Sorin swampguy, which was cause for uprising. Then I pulled another coveted card, then yet TWO MORE coveted cards. It became apparent that I would not need a lot of boosters to get my deck all built.

Done with the nerding.

During one of the games with my friend jonny, I non-nonchalantly said "tacocat is a palindrome" and it literally stopped his mind from working for at least 3 minutes.

I saw In Flames a couple of years ago, and it was an enjoyable concert experience.  Unfortunately, I had wanted to see the opening bands (Evergrey and Nevermore) but I got there late.  I got to meet the guys from Evergrey, though, and they were super cool (nobody else there knew who they were, so they were just hanging out).

On Magic.

I haven't played for probably a decade now, but every couple of years, I go out and buy a couple boosters anyway, just so my mind is blown by the cards that are out these days. It's really amazing the way the balance of power shifts from set to set as the designers tinker with things. Back in my day, I always thought the vast majority of creatures were honestly pretty laughable; DD X-spells, instants and obscenely powerful deck manipulation were more my style. I probably only played with like, 5 or 6 critters in my deck, at most, and why shouldn't? I could always rifle through my deck and deploy them at an instant; such was the power of Demonic Tutor and blue's stupidly powerful card drawing ability. My friends were actively surprised when I played a white deck with 16 creatures in it once rather than wipe the board and clock 'em with a finisher. I imagine it is still like that in that weird monstrosity known as Vintage play, except by now they probably don't even fuck around with critters at all.

But in standard? I remember the day I cracked open a pack and found out that Incinerate and Lightning Bolt had given way to some shit called Spark, and that Drain Life isn't even around anymore. And who the hell is this Masticore douche bag and where does he get off on costing 4 mana?

There is some goddamn bullshit stuff in the newest set that pisses me off. Like a 2 drop that can kill any planeswalker instantly and there is almost no counter to it. I also wanted them to make a new Jace Beleren card so I could have the TRIUMVIRATE OF JACE.

johnny man borrow a friend's phone and try your SIM card in it to test it. I think the SIM card should be safer than the phone's electronics as a) being less complicated (fewer parts and bits and bobs) and b) being inside the phone where maybe it was protected.

Last Saturday I was at a flat party and their downstairs neighbour came and hung out with us and he was wearing the Think Positive shirt.

I had an extensive conversation with him, but I don't remember about what.

It was kinda cool.

johnny man borrow a friend's phone and try your SIM card in it to test it. I think the SIM card should be safer than the phone's electronics as a) being less complicated (fewer parts and bits and bobs) and b) being inside the phone where maybe it was protected.

Apparently it doesn't have a SIM card cause it's a ~smartphone~ but it's working now although the screen's all blotchy :<

So, it now takes me two cups of coffee to wake up in the morning.  This is unfortunate because I only have time to grab one on my way to quantum optics at 9am, which is taught by a very boring man who does lots and lots of math on the board (it's a dry erase board and he goes through three+ markers per day).  Why would it have been so hard to have the class start an hour later?  I got shit to do at night!

Also, I really want to play music again.  I'm in three rock bands, but they're just rock bands and not even that great ones (one is pretty cool).  I want to be a freelance bassist again.  Playing jazz, picking up random other gigs, but mainly playing jazz.  Unfortunately, I don't have much time to practice (or network!) these days so it looks like it's only rock for me.  Also, the life sucked pretty badly because of the work schedule back then so there's a reason I got out of the business.  If only there were a way just to play music with awesome musicians without having to network and work during the fun parts of the day...

BB, espresso is a beautiful thing.

Hey blog thread, my cheek is gross!  I had fillings last week at the dentist, and chewed my cheek while it was numb.  Now, it is all infected and puffy and I hurt halfway down my throat.  The good thing is that I finally saw a doctor today... man, this having health insurance stuff rocks!  How did I live without it for so long???
