my favourite coffee shop in toronto had an achewood reference on their front plaque thing yesterday!
if they weren't already my favourite coffee shop yesterday, they are now -

the coffee shop is orange alert at dundas + mccaul (across from the art gallery of ontario) and if you live in toronto you should check them out, they are wonderful.

Today, I am sick. er. Sicker. I woke up with a terrible cough. My boyfriend decided to stay home as well, and take care of me. Today has been snuggles galore, and super naps, and now he is taking me out to get dressed up sushi! Woo being sick. But seriously. Having somebody bring you orange juice and cough medicine, and then lay in bed and super snuggle you is the best. Then when you are all feeling a bit better and they are like "well, I got paid and I want to take you somewhere nice, and I don't think you should cook right now anyway, plus this place is a vodka bar too." is the best, the absolute best. woo awesome boyfriend!

Also, my best friend got voted the best barista in our entire city! How awesome is that!

I don't even like coffee but this place has my patronage if I ever decide for some ridiculous reason to be in a place like Canada.

The car is full, and all the boxes are full.

So why is it that my room is still an absolute tip?

Brett, I am pulling for you to get lucky.

thank you for masturbating for my good luck, It worked! I have a new home, it is a gorgeous little run down three bedroom Queenslander with nice wooden floors and nice people that live in it and don't smoke pot all the time but seem to have similar interests in robot music and dancing.

It was the first place I looked at and I had 2 hours to go from the city centre to one side of town and then to complete opposite side of town and then back to the first side of town (I did not organize the order in which I was going to do the inspections very well) during peak hour traffic and I arrived all flustered and jittery and anxious about whether I would even make it to the other two places and I thought I came across as kind of weird but apparently not (or they like weird people which is even better)

Hey blog thread, today was a cool day.

Last night the skinny magazine tweeted that fanfarlo was doing a guerilla gig thing in Glasgow at 1 here: After finding out where it is by trawling the intertubes, I texted my flat mate, and the next morning we got up at eight, took the ten o'clock train, walked around Glasgow for a bit trying to find the University, had some fish and chips, and then went to this gig. Fanfarlo played, really well (acoustics were a bit lame), there were kids on a school trip who started dancing and everything was just generally happy. Afterwards we talked to the people in the band, and tried to convince them to come to Edinburgh (it was the kick of for their tour). Then we went back to Edinburgh. Yay for short and snappy day trips.

Then in Edinburgh I installed my computer, trained a bunch of new people for our student radio station (which only went okay, but I was exhausted shush). When I got home again my flatmate and I made a pizza from scratch with broccoli, olives, mozzarella, cheddar, and fresh tomatoes.

Now I have to do a bunch of work because I slacked off all day.

Uni is awesome! (I must cross post this into the Uni/College thread).

Edit: The pizza was fucking delicious. And fuck it, I'm going to the pub.

I have been complaining to various people about how dang busy I am, so I figured I'd show you guys how I'm keeping track of my life. I spent 90% of my time at home in my bedroom, which has a wall that looks like this:

Because I look at this wall as I try to fall asleep, I am forced to see a to-do list that looks like this:

The reading list is what I'm most worried about. The titles in pink are ones I am already behind on, the ones in blue I should be reading currently, and the ones in yellow are coming up in the very near future. The essays list is scary too, because those dates are a lot sooner than they seem. The "?" in front of Rhetoric is now October 29th. I have a list of things to buy, including some very expensive items (a desk and chair, a bookcase...) and things I can't live without (winter clothes). Stuff in orange is kinda important. And at the bottom in the pink box are things I have to keep in mind because I want to keep my schedule/budget flexible enough that I can work those into my life.

I am so stressed because I have all these things to do, but I work 30 hrs/wk and have class 15 hrs/wk. I also try to maintain some sort of social life (it's for my sanity, really). My problem is that the money just isn't there for school and all of these things I need to buy, so I work more, and then I have no time to do school. What...what do I do.

woah

Allison that is a fucking fantastic wall. I need one just like it. Possibly considering a giant whiteboard for next semester now. Not sure where I would put it but whatevs. I'm in pretty much the same boat in terms of balancing school and work (except replace "social life" with "buying and playing records") and as BB said all you can do is just try your best to keep up. You might be amazed when you look back how much you actually managed to get done.

I have been away from the internet but now I am back.

Following the spectacular computer clusterfuck that happened on my birthday, I took it to a data recovery firm so they could try to recover the data. Firmly. After being without my computer for a week and a half and losing potential money hand over fist (no computer equals no work equals no pay equals losing around A$250 a day) I realised that it would be more cost effective to go out and buy a new fucking computer to use until I get mine back.

So now I have an Asus Eee which I'll be able to take instead of my normal, cumbersome laptop whenever I go interstate or overseas. Because it's too small to even have a DVD drive it's sitting on my desk with cables linked up to external drives coming out of every orifice, and my desk looks like the set of a bad 90s hacker film.

The 20-year-old me would be astonished and probably a little ashamed at the amount of technology I now own.

I'm glad I'm 30 and not 20.

What...what do I do.

Put your head down and do the best you can, because what other option is there?  Remember that it's not permanent, it only seems that way.  That's what I'm doing where there really is no social life, there's just the things I'm doing for school (which is work, too, because that's how I'm making money).  I just keep reminding myself that, yes, next week is going to be just as hard as this week, but there will come a week that isn't so bad and it will be so much better because this week and next week and the week after were so bad.

That said, I need to knock out this solution set to the homework that I graded so I can upload it and get at least one professor of my back.  Then it's sleepy time for quantum optics at way too fucking early o'clock tomorrow morning.  I was awake solely on caffeine today, and tomorrow is going to be at least as bad.  Why does time have to keep moving?  Why can't it just stop every once in a while?  I've got fall break on Monday, but it won't even alleviate any worries, because I've got to do just as much work as well as go into lab.  The funny thing is, I just want to work in the lab all day, but I can't because of classes.  How screwed up is that?  I want to produce things for the University, but they won't let me because they feel the need to teach me how to do things I'm already doing.

There's not really, it's just Margaret Atwood churning out a book a year.

ALTERNATIVE JOKE:

There is, but it's almost impossible to tell it from American literature.

My CanLit class is actually pretty great, thanks to Professor Robert McGillGorgeous. We're reading some cool stuff...but I have to wait til April to read Douglas Coupland (boo).
Also, I am probably going to Margaret Atwood's birthday party. Awesome!

edit: Oh my fuck. Today at my super classy office job, I am lugging Xerox boxes full of assorted training booklets up and downstairs in a building that doesn't have an elevator. I am going to diiiie there are at least 25 boxes kill me

So basically you're being banished to the snowy north for a year.

Probably no internet access.

Jens I am not really doing much with my life right now how about I do your service because I am a man of the north myself and I think it'd be pretty bitchin' to guard against the red menace for a while and then you don't have to worry about it?

Has anyone here done military service? I don't mean served in the military but been drafted. I'm interested to know how it affects a person to be forced into the army and spend a year doing things that I am fairly certain I would not be able to cope with.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

I have a Norwegian friend a couple of years older then Jens (I'm assuming this) and he's finished his military service there.

As far as I can tell he has really enjoyed it. He claims that he learned a lot, and that it really stuck with him. I don't think he regrets it, and he's definitely not really the army going type.

Broccoli on pizza does sound amazing, how have I never thought of that? I love broccoli and I love other green vegetables on pizza (eg. I think I've gotten green peppers on every pizza I've ordered all summer.)

I was first introduced to it by a friend who cooks a lot, and he made me a pizza that was like five centimeters high in parts completely filled with vegetables. It was delicious.

Ben (miserateur [sp?]) who used to post here is Israeli and wasn't looking forward to his service but he ended up really enjoying it. My recollection could be off, but I think he had something funky with his heart so he couldn't serve in the army so he ended up as an MP and really enjoyed his work. I think it's the kind of thing where you don't think it was actually that bad in retrospect and that it does help with discipline and focus, but it still kind of feels like a bit of a dick move to be drafted and forced into military service in the first place. It is a year of your life.
