As I read that post, I heard Tenacious D in the background. You know what song I mean...

And the BTBAM album is coming out in a week? Awesome  :-D

Speaking of new releases, a cool UK band called The Arusha Accord recently released their debut full-length called The Echo Verses. They're a lot like SikTh, which is of course a Good Thing.

Today I came home to find both my copy of Baroness' The Blue Record and Boris' Japanese Heavy Rocks Vol. 1 waiting for me.

I just ordered my copy the other day. Sadly, the package deal had sold out, so no Vol. 4 for me. =(

dear blog thread,

I am in Heidelberg right now, visiting my friend L. who invited my here on sunday. also i got to see the one girl i love more than anyone again today, it was already worth coming here. now i just need to think of a good way to tell my parents that i'm dropping out of university (again) to move her and work in some kind of bar or something. just to be with her. well not with her, but close to her, so that i can at leas see her a few times a week.
which is not the real reason, but definitely a kind of needle to break the camel's back, a camel which is called "dominik's future as a student in mainz". it's not like i'm going to really get that degree anyway.
so now she told me that she was really looking forward to me moving here and she already had a room for me with some friends, and next year (when i was planning to move) she maybe won't be here at all! so, she said, i should do it now, and she was expecting me here any time, actually. so. damn.
where's the relationship advice thread* when i need it?

Actually the imminent release of this album kinds of brings up a moral quandary for me. I really love BTBAM and I want to buy the album. Not just for reasons of supporting the artist (an incredibly silly justification for buying CD's), but also simply for selfish reasons. I'd like a lossless, physical copy of the album with artwork and all that malarkey.

But they're on Victory Records, whose mistreatment of it's artists is notorious, and who I am very very reluctant to give any money to.

Luckily this is the last album in their contract, so it's not something I'll have to worry about for much longer. Ditto Darkest Hour, the only other band worth a shit on that label.

Treble clef would be cooler. You could do it with fishing wire and thumbtacks. It would be awesome.

This is implying that there is anything cooler than a bass clef, which is incorrect.  Are you aware of my user name?

I'd like a lossless, physical copy of the album with artwork and all that malarkey.

This is the exact reason I buy CDs rather than online downloads.

I think that is great justification. If you want to look at it divorced from the emotional desire to give money to people I like, it can be thought of as an investment. If I give someone the means to survive maybe they will stay alive and make more records since it seems feasible for them to do so.
Of course, this rationale is diminished if you're not buying CDs from artists on tour.

Some lady called my store wanting to know how much money she would need to bring in for a custom frame job and my coworker told her she could come in for a quote. Normally people would be like, "Oh ok," but no, she flipped out and said, "NO! I don't want to have to come in and say 'I don't have enough money, I HAVE TO LEAVE!'" I don't know why, but I thought that was really funny. I think sitting in a 3.5 hour long conference call this morning has addled my brains.

also if you like a band AND their label it's really important to buy CDs in the shops as well as when artists are on tour, that way you can sustain a mechanism that ultimately helps independent artists.

my old campus radio station, cfru 93.3 fm, is currently running their annual funding drive, raise your voice. as some of you may remember, cfru 93.3 fm was the venue of the sporadically-hosted but always entertaining tommy and tania show, as well as my regular weekly show, paid in cigarettes. this year they're trying to raise $10,000 for a new transmitter and also to basically keep existing in general.

i know this is probably a bit of a stretch as most of you are probably either poor and broke (like me) or don't care too much about cfru, but i thought i'd throw this out here anyway. if you liked our show and you're in support of campus radio in general, and you are okay with contributing a little bit of money, now's the time. any amount matters. this station was really important to me and there's a lot of really talented and passionate people who work here (joel plaskett, patti smith, billy bragg, ian mackaye, david yow, nardwuar the human serviette, lee ranaldo, steve albini, and will oldham are just a few of the hundreds of incredible people who have been interviewed on this station at some point in the recent past), and it would be a real shame to have it shut down, which unfortunately they seem to be on the verge of doing every time they do a funding drive on account no one cares about public radio anymore.

What pisses me off most about Tony Brummel is that when I start working as an EMT again in two weeks I'll be making far less money than that asshat despite providing you know, an emergency service. Then again, I probably shouldn't feel particularly righteous about my particular situation since as long as your job doesn't involve committing fraud it's probably safe to say that you're more valuable to society than Tony Brummel.

I'm reading through this Victory Records thread and man, it is sordid. I remember watching MTV2 as a lad and seeing nonstop ads for Thursday and Taking Back Sunday, with the Victory Records logo always prominent, playing endlessly between programs and during breaks. Sort of unsettling to know that their entire purpose was to fuck the bands they were promoting.

Bingo! And seeing as the bands that need the money the most are usually also too small to be able to tour to Australia (and particularly Perth), double bingo!

If my primary rationale is to give money to an artist, the last thing I'd do is buy a CD. The artist is going to get, what, 10c per sale? And that is if they're on a a label that is actually somewhat ethical about paying out royalties. It's not like Victory is the only label that stiffs artists by funneling royalties off into "recoupables". I'd rather buy a t-shirt or see a show (where possible) or hell, even just PayPal them a few bucks.

Actually these days the major (commerical, mainstream) bands come here fairly often - if not nearly as often as they tour the U.S. or Europe. Occasionally you have a hold-out from an earlier era - Neil Young, for instance, only came to Australia for the first time a few years ago - but generally it's the mid-level bands that almost never come here. Bands like the Arcade Fire, for instance, who seem to tour the Northern Hemisphere pretty much non-stop, but have only been to Australia once, last year, for a handful of shows in some of the major cities and a bunch of slots on a touring festival.

Hi Blawg,

My kid has had a heck of a month at preschool.  She flips out every morning and looks terrified to go.  She finally told me a couple days ago that she has no friends, her teachers don't like her and 2 little girls hit her.  One of the little girls is the director's daughter and the director's response when I mentioned it was, "oh, I'm not surprised."  Really.  Not surprised.  You run a preschool, but you can't control even your own kid?  So I'm pulling Faye out.  They dont' teach her shit anyway.  They said she's too "advanced."  No, she isn't.  She's turning 4 and can't read well.  She's not advanced.  She can't do addition.  She's bright, but she's not being taught anything.

The school doesn't seem to want to help her adapt and I've tried what I could to make it go better.  They have a 30 day cancellation requirement though, so this really sucks.  I'm going to send her back to her old daycare.  She loved it there.  My sister is awesome and is going to send me a week's tuition so I can move Faye over a little earlier.  I can't afford to pay two places at once, or she'd be out entirely this week.  This has been so stressful.  Nothing is more heartbreaking than your own sweet kid telling you nobody likes her and having her so scared to go somewhere.  She's even started wetting the bed at night.  She has NEVER wet the bed, even when she was training.  I keep thinking there is something more serious happening, but she just doesn't have the words or doesn't know how to say anything.  I just hate the thought of her feeling this way for a long time.  It's terrible.

Dear Blog Thread,
For the first time in 4 years I am (more or less) unemployed. As a result of a terrible 2010 PA state budget, and a worse one forecasted in 2011, I am now only getting 3 days of work a week and will be laid off completely in about a month. I applied for unemployment benefits, but I still feel like a freaking bum. I've been applying for some federal jobs, but nothing has come up yet. Freidns keep pushing me to apply for some cop jobs in Pittsburgh, but I'm trying to use this as my ticket OUT of police work. Time to put the 5 years in college/ internships to work instead of my 5 months at police academy, you know? Wish me luck on the job hunt blog thread!
On the upside, I now have $7500 dollars saved for an engagement ring! I decided to go with a ring from Tiffany's, another $1000 and I should have enough for the ring I want. Yay!

That is awful. I would withdraw right away. What can they do about it? They're supposed to provide a service they're not providing and are should have an obligation to ensure your daughter's wellbeing, they ain't doing either. I'd withdraw and if they didn't like it, I'd tell them to go fuck themselves  and threaten to sue them for damages. You live in America. What kind of America is it where the threat of a lawsuit accomplishes nothing? Y'know, it's free if it's just a threat.
There's nothing more important in the world than your kid and you know they just fucked her. Fuck 'em back.

Hey guys!  Update.  I am pretty much doing music with all of my free time now.  It's awesome.  I might even get to play some jazz on Monday with a drummer I know can do it and a piano player whom I think will play too much.  By the way, this book is awesome and slightly hilarious when you think of it as this this guy basically ranting about the established method of thinking about and teaching music theory.  One of my bands possibly found a singer who is awesome and surprisingly not in a band (I was sure she was and didn't want to talk to her, but the drummer insisted, and so we'll be trying her out).  I have a show on November 4th with a different band, and that'll be awesome.  It's been too long since I've played out.

Also, threats of lawsuits are okay, but also maybe other legal troubles (the Better Business Bureau exists for a reason).  Also maybe punching them in the face, but that might not be a good idea all told.

Today has been a pretty good day! I had a bit of a flustered morning because I had intended to get up early and finish up prep for my supervision at 10 but I slept in so I wasn't totally prepared for it. It was ok though, I had prepared sufficiently. The problem was that it ran over so we missed our lecture :s The supervision has now been rescheduled.

At lunchtime I did a short Q&A for a visiting high school who are from an inner city area with a very high ethnic minority population, and got a free lunch out of it. I'm not sure how many of the children we managed to convince to apply here but at least it will get them thinking about it.

Then I actually did some work, and at five I had endurance training for ice hockey. Basically that is just long distance running for an hour - I ran the track three times (it is 1km) but actually walked parts of it. The others ran it four times; I'm determined to make it round four times next time. I didn't do the pressups in between laps either; that's my goal by Christmas. I'm horrifically unfit but I have a sneaky suspicion that by the time I go home in December I'll be the fittest I have ever been in my life.

On the way back I bumped into a girl who I saw at matriculation dinner and who turned out to be the girl with the same surname as me (we keep getting each other's post) and we chatted and she is really nice and kinda cute and probably straight but you can't win them all. And then I went out for pizza for my friend's birthday and now I am home and having an early night.

Oh oh and the whole point of this post was to say that I got the stage managment post I had applied for! It's for a show in November and the only downside is that the closing night is the night of the Law Ball, which is the highlight of the social year (you have to start queueing for tickets at 7am if you have any chance of getting one and they go on sale at nine), so I can't go. It's doubly bad because my college mums are running it and I really wanted to see what they'd done. Ah well.

Today has been pretty good :) And tomorrow I don't have lectures til ten and I'm going to the cinema!

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

How about Emilio, who actually lives in Mexico?

Nah, he wouldn't be any help.

Emilio would just talk about the terrible situation of there being no Kuma's in the area.

To be fair that is a terrible thing.

No, he would probably talk about Dopesmoker weekend and his lack of a vinyl rip.

We had a special meeting this morning at the library.  As a result we posted on the front door that the library would be closed until 10 AM.

During the meeting a library patron that has some mental problems went to a side door that is clearly marked as staff only and went in.  I am assuming he did this because he wanted to use the computer and the front door was locked (with a sign on it saying the library was to open at 10 AM).  The side door was supposed to be locked but it was left unlocked by accident.

At this point he has trespassed onto library property through a private entryway when the library was not open and broke the law.

I felt we should have him banned for perhaps a month or something.  I know that he has a lot of problems but I don't think this means that the rules don't apply to him.  In addition there could have been other people who saw him enter that door and leave with no repercussions.

The senior staff decided to escort him out and not have any kind of punishment.

This is a guy who used to drive a car and he isn't someone who is required to have constant supervision.  He uses the internet and has money to pay for printouts.

I know that sometimes you have to take things into consideration but I still think that his mental state doesn't allow him to ignore all laws and rules.  But, I am a new librarian and the other people have more experience than me.  So it's their decision.

BTW

The meeting was about problem patrons in the library.  His name came up when the person running the lecture asked for examples.
