I end up facing the dude-bro hive-mind issue every now and then when I'm coexisting with both a group of my guy freinds and my girlfriend.  It tends to revolve around talking about Magic: The Gathering, in fact, and since I have a fair amount of enthusiasm for delving into detailed talks on precisely that topic, it sometimes takes a fair amount of conversation juggling to offer any attention to her whatsoever.  She's on good terms with all of them, fortunately, and she can carry on conversations with any of them individually (and she's pretty good at occupying herself when ALL of us guys are in the same conversation that she's not in), so she can fend for herself pretty easily when we're enmeshed in our androcentric geekery.  I don't feel bad about it at all, really.  She's told me on numerous occasions that I should feel free to just hang with my buddies if/when I want to, and if it ever got to a point that was uncomfortable for her, I'm sure she'd tell me.  I spend a LOT of time with her nowadays so the relationship has a fair amount of slack.

I mean, my girlfriend's really laid-back about the whole thing, really, and often enough, that's what it comes down to.  I like to think that I'm conscientious about the issue, but the real fact is that more often than not it's not even necessary for me to stay on my toes about it.

Yeah, my old girlfriend in high school had the same circle of friends as I did and we all got along great, but even she didn't want to stick around when we busted out the Magic cards while watching a Vikings game.

I am very lucky that my boyfriend's circle of friends are completely open and loving and welcomed me with super hugs. Also there are enough of them that are totally nerdy beneath their cool musician exterior that I can carry on an interesting conversation with them when he's talking to someone else. Hooray!

I just got paid oh holy thank heck because for a day or two there I was sure I was going to be evicted because I was so behind on rent.

Next time you are around his friends, sit on his lap. Force him to confront the issue.

NOTE: This is very good advice.
Y'know, unless he's gay or sumn, amirite?

(yes, I'm kinda sorta joking-ish)

Well I mean, while there's nothing wrong with homosexuality, maybe, just maybe, a dude and a chick shouldn't be a relationship if one of the two is just completely not attracted to the other. So that could be a legitimate concern!

Dear blag,

So my on-off-on-off-on-off-on (repeat ad nauseum) girlfriend's ex decided to threaten me with physical injury and death when I tried to apologize for dicking her while they were still dating, and so I went legal on his ass by petitioning a magistrate for a 6 month protection order. We've got a hearing on the 19th, and from what I've come to understand, he's going to avoid going to it. Which is funny 'cause the police served him the summons for the hearing the DAY I petitioned for the order. So he really has no choice. If I understand it correctly, I think it's some kind of crime to be summoned for a hearing and not appear.

Then there was the issue where I had to beg and plead with Becca to testify. I told her "I'm not asking you to be a character witness, or to spin things my way by perjury. I'm asking you to tell what you remember happening, and to confirm or deny whether Phil's and my testimony is accurate. Pretty damn simple, and it would help both of us solve this." And she still didn't want to do it. She "doesn't want to get involved" or some such bullshit. I was like, "Becca you are about as involved as anybody could be." Even the fucking magistrate said so when he asked me to talk to her about testifying. She doesn't want to get involved with any legal process. Considering all the basic human courtesies she's denied me, I told her that the choice was up to her, but that it would severely damage any hope of our relationship's recovery. Which is true. So she's doing it.

Now she's off getting a tattoo with money that her ex is loaning to her. I told her in no uncertain terms that I had my suspicions as to how she was going to pay him back (not the first time I've said I suspected her of cheating), considering her $8.5k medical bill debt and the fact that she's only working part time because of college. And it's not just me who has these suspicions.

It just pisses me off that she would not only do as little as humanly possible to save our relationship, but that she'd use her ex as a sugardaddy STILL. It's like they never fucking broke up. I know they did, I heard both sides of the story because they both figured they could vent to me. Which was fine! But the way they are now is cause for incredible suspicion, and she doesn't even seem to care that it upsets me that I have so much cause to distrust her.

I really, truly hate my life.

Love,
Me!

FWB isn't for everyone. Really, you are friends that also have makeouts, essentially. If it makes you confused or uncomfortable, then don't do it. Otherwise, I guess just go with the flow?

Yeah, I'm gonna talk to her and tell her that we can cuddle and hug and kiss on the cheek, but it makes me kind of uncomfortable to make out with her until she really wants to have a full-fledged relationship. I hope it goes well.

Same thing happened to me. You can buy replacement one-thing-fits-all cables at Jaycar (I'm not sure what your equivalent would be? somewhere to buy techy bits and pieces) for way cheaper than you can an actual replacement cable.
After a year and four seperate cables i figured out it was actually my laptop that had the problem, and then it died on me and I could never charge it up again. Boo.

Anyway guys it is SPRING and I bought a NEW DRESS (pics later) and then I bought a cold can of creaming soda and a beef, veal and olive sausage roll from my local amazing bakery and sat in the park and watched dogs roll around in the sunny grass. Hooray!

is there a word in the english dictionary for a person in which his friends constantly bail on him/her?  Its one thing to say you cant make it or are unavailable, its another thing to make plans with them and then they bail on you that day. I feel like banging my head on my desk.  All the reasons for bailing are legit but I cant help but feel that it happening 6 times in the past 2 weeks is suspicious. Am I a loser? Hell its stuff like this that made me become a loner/hermit after highschool.  Its like "why bother! no one wants to hang out with you anyways!"

Yeah, gotta agree with Slick's interpretation; those people are being flakey bastards.

Honestly, I can't handle flakey; it makes me crazy. Things are Serious Business to me, and it is kinda unfortunate because if I took it less personal I'd probably be a lot happier in general. For example, you know how people say things like "We should get together more often," after a long separation even though they're really just being polite and have no real intentions of following through? I can't do that. It just comes across as the most transparently token bullshit to ever come out of a person's mouth when I say it and I sort of hate myself afterwards. Which, frankly, is pretty dumb because such exchanges aren't exactly rare or even remotely malicious. I'm so anal retentive on this subject that when planning for Chicago con I felt like I had to give Liz a final heads up on whether or not I could definitely go at least 3 months in advance so as not to potentially screw up anyone's road trip plans. Failure to do so would make me feel like a complete asshat. Sometimes I worry that I am a crazy person.

I completely agree with you.  I am totally neurotic when it comes to plans, because I want to make sure everything is going as it should, since my plans tend to be rather intense.  However, with regards to this statement you made:
you know how people say things like "We should get together more often," after a long separation even though they're really just being polite and have no real intentions of following through?

Whenever I say "We should get together more often," I totally mean it, and intend to do so.

this, this is the worst thing.

what makes it worse is when you try to tease these kinds of people about their flaky ways, and they insist that they are so not like that and then they end up not hanging out with you anyway.

I've had similar experience of that for the last couple of weeks. However, the worst thing about it was that the friend was as pissed off about it as I was. Basically, the world was saying "NO" to any kind of meet up.

I am terrible about sleeping through plans often. Like, I have slept through plans that took place in my own apartment. That is how bad I am. But my dad and I totally do the "we should hang out more often" thing, and then three or four months go by and one of us finally calls the other.

BLOG FOR THE BLOG GOD

So, next tuesday I am going to be recording with my band in an actual studio, for the first time in my life. I am ridiculously excited. We are going to do everything live in one or two takes. I'm a guitar player, and will be doing some solos and even chanting while playing on one track. I'll probably end up pimping us out on here once some of these recordings hit the internet.

Awesome, recording is fun :)

So yesterday we opened the ice rink! I was super excited about it and I got to skate for over two hours for free :) I made massive improvements, it was great to have the chance to just work on what I know I need to get better at without struggling to do drill which are too difficult. I was a little anxious occasionally because I'd been ringing, texting and emailing Anna all day with no response but I got hold of her in the end, went round to see her and ended up staying. It was really nice waking up just as happy and comfortable with someone as I was when I went to sleep, but now I'm rushing a criminal law problem question which I should really email now but I haven't quite finished so I'll send it after my ballet class.

And more skating tonight! We have our last game of the term. Tomorrow is standard training, I'll go after lectures and before my supervision on Monday and then Tuesday morning we have our first 7.30am ice training session :S I'm aiming to skate at least once a day for the next three weeks and then we go to Finland! I am going to be the ice skating queen by the new year.

That is a complete and total lie.  It's frustrating more than anything else.  Getting it to sound right is the hardest thing ever, even if you nail all the parts.  If you're just laying tracks down and leaving, and leaving the final sound in the hands of other people then it will be great and fun.  However, if you're going to be sitting in the booth trying to figure out why it doesn't sound like it should, then be prepared to pour your life into incredibly minor improvements that are all absolutely necessary.

Wtf. My best friend's kid sister basically just announced her engagement on facebook by saying she bought a wedding dress. Without telling ANYONE first, including her mom and two sisters. Also she's only been with the guy less than four months. I don't want to be rude, but I really just want to reply with, "Hooray, I guess? But seriously, WTF." Mostly because I KNOW I would have gotten a phone call from my friend complaining about how stupid her sister is, but I had to tell my friend, who frankly was pretty effing pissed her sister didn't tell her, their other sister, and/or their mom first. I mean she's that sister you swear had to have been accidentally switched in the nursery just because she's the polar opposite from the other two.

I dunno why it's cheesy, because it comes out as : lol : (w/o the spaces).

And yes, that is a much better emoticon.

thanks all for understanding. So today I went into DC to check out the freer and sackler art galleries for a paper and then went over the natural history museum (favorite museum by far!) it just sucks when you do these kind of adventures by yourself. :|  it sucks when you have no one to talk to about how awesome/lame an exhibit is.  And to top it off when I was in the under water exhibit in the natural history museum a large group of people dressed in 18/19 century clothing walked in and started singing whaling tunes (I am not making this shit up, had an old style accordion from the era and a couple of string instruments and sang! sea shanties!) now if only the people didnt bail then I could have been able to talk about this with them.  I took many pictures though but yeah just sucks.  :-(

To add some actual blarg content for the blarg thread.

I applied to a scholarship program in Japan to go practice kendo for a year in a specialised school. On the 17th the admissions commitee convenes and from the 25th on I should have an answer. There is nothing more that can be done at this stage and my chances are pretty good but it doesn't stop me from making a   Σ(゜д゜; ) face every now and then.

Tonight, for the first time in ages, I took out my telescope and did some star gazing. It was cold, dark and utterly wonderful. I had a great view of the Pleiades and the Andromeda galaxy. Why do I not do this more often

Today, I went to a write-in with my local NaNoWriMo people and wrote 4,300 words.

Brain hurts now.

We won the last hockey match of the term 7-4 :)

During the game, a girl on the other team had an epileptic fit. She did it very tidily and timed it well, just waiting until play had stopped, and then after a minute she was fine and carried on. She must be pretty brave to play a fast-paced, violent sport involving sharp blades when she's at risk of blackouts but I think she can probably tell when they're about to happen and get herself into a safe place.

There's this really handy "other thing" I'm going to write as a footnote to my abstract that I can probably explore these issues in. I think I'll call it my "dissertation."

Yesterday I went to a boat party and Lonely Island references were kept to a bare minimum and there were attractive ladies everywhere and everybody was wearing jeans cut-offs and Wayfarers aw yeaaahhhhhhh
