Man much as I love Australian summer, it makes it kind of hard to get psyched for Christmas baking. I am just about to head to the shops to get ingredients for an afternoon of kitchening because I am poor and cannot afford presents for anyone.... but it's so niiiiice out and I'd much rather be sitting in the sun reading a book and drinking a beer.

Man it sure is a nice day today.

In more bloggy news, instead of enjoying this lovely day which is my first proper holiday for about a year I am fucking stressed because one of our housemates has chosen to move out at the worst possible time. People are away for Christmas and New Years, goddammit, and noone is looking for places, and I don't want to have to be here to show the room to people. And the house in a state of chaos. Bah.

Emaline, maybe you could move to Australia and solve both of our problems!

Seriously though, if any of you Sydney people know anyone that's looking for a room, PM me or something.

I will be looking for a room/apartment in a month or so? Also I have a cat? Sorry. That's not much help, is it?
If you need any help though, Nick, I am not doing anything for two weeks so I can give you a hand with anything you need. Because we need to hang out more. We need to hang out.

On the topic of funk: Go-go. Great subgenre, or greatest subgenre?

Anyway, odd times in KvP-town, population me, as I arrive in Memphis. I am visiting family, and some new cousins (foster kids adopted a year or so ago by the aunt and uncle). Thing is, the elder girl is gay, but she is closeted. She told my other cousin, who told my mom, who told me. I am not supposed to know this. She's in high school in the American South. She seems sort of sad, but I could just be projecting my loneliness (and my loathing of high school) onto her. So I was thinking of inviting her to CO to meet my happy, well-adjusted gay friends. But, I'm not supposed to know, so I'm keeping my trap shut. I'm probably overestimating the amount of good I can do this girl, anyway. She could have friends of her own! She could have gay friends! I just have a hard time imagining that as I had none of those things when I was her age. Cest la vie.

I am at work. Apparently, my good friend who I am working with right now hadn't actually quit from our old job, so he is now filling in my shifts. I have apologized to him many times over because I didn't realize they would do this to him. That place is absolutely terrible. I'm going to try to convince him to quit, because they didn't give him any hours over there for a month and a half, and then suddenly they are having him fill in. Why he is even working over there still I don't know.

Thanks Lunchy, I guess just mention it to anyone who says they're looking for a place? I had a Serious Talk with my housemate and he agreed that it was a shitty time and said he'd pay rent for an extra week if it'd help us out, so it might not be so bad. Also, I'm totally up for hanging out... maybe sometime after Christmas/New Years shennanigans.

I have actually drawn a comic about it, but I cannot scan it in until I am back in Newcastle (p.s. anyone who likes my comics enough to care I am starting a comic blog soon).

The story though is that I was hanging out in this pub in Melbourne with some dudes I know when a guy comes up to me and says 'Hey mate, that guy was just going through your bag' and points to a dude who'd just left the pub. My friend Dane leaps up (Dane is huge by the way, in a body builder sense, he could probably break me with one arm) and cries 'I'll get the fucker!' and runs out, me and Louie walk out casually after him and I start checking my bag, in there I had an mp3 player, a phone, a cardholder filled with money, id, eftpos and credit cards and my medicare card and plenty of loose cash. What the guy actually stole was my old wallet that I hadn't got around to throwing away yet, which contained a business card for a tailor's in Newcastle. So Dane catches up to the dumb fuck, who decides that it's a good idea to get in Dane's face with all 5 feet of his skinny as a rail bulk. Me and Louie catch up to Dane just as the dude is getting ready to throw a punch, and he looks at us and bolts. It was fucking hilarious as all hell.

Go To The Doctor.

Wire hanging out of your nose that may or may not be attached somehow to your brain is grounds to go to the Doctor.

I don't think cutting off the bit that is sticking out and trying not to think about it is a very good idea in any scenario.

No, this is not The Girl, this is another girl who I was having a flirtation with this time last year. I don't think we're Going Out going out but at least I don't have to spend New Year's Eve alone for the first time in my life.

Today got off to a really bad start with a lot of shouting and the sort of crying that makes my face really blotchy and red and horrible, and wound up being pretty good. This was almost entirely because, and it's a weird reason, the power cut out at work at about 1pm when it was starting to get really busy and the tills all went down for five minutes. When mine came back up, the scales weren't working so I had to improvise with fruit and vegetables and I think my manager was impressed. This is good, she is one scary lady.

Anyway I thrive on busyness and crisis and I was beginning to reach the point where my brain was folding in on itself, so it was nice to get something to deal with. Even if it was a rather bad thing for the shop. Then I went to the library and did some work and someone thought I worked there and I drank lots of hot chocolate.

I went to a party last night and brought my special homemade long island green tea with... it had been in my fridge for a while but I figured it'd still be good. I'm not positive on this but I think it got stronger. Can alcohol re-ferment if you add lemon juice and simple syrup? It was extra delicious and I only drank half a glass to get a perfect buzz.

I also had a "duh" epiphany where this girl who I'd assumed had a great life, had it all "figured out", she passed out on the futon and when my friend passed out on the futon with her, she kept stroking his hair while passed out. I was amused by this supposed "drunk reflex" (I assumed she was fully passed out and her hand kept moving independently), and mentioned it to her friend, who replied, "No, she's just been really lonely lately". On the plus side I ended up feeling way better about myself!

Tommy, man. Sinus surgery sucks. I get the feeling you possibly had a similar type of operation on yours to what my mum had. It was ages and ages ago and I don't know whether I was even born then. But I'd say that they could have put in the stitches that dissolved? I know when I had my wisdom teeth out, I am sure I didn't even get stitches, because they never told me, but everyone just assumed I had the ones that dissolved and told me I couldn't have not had stitches.

I dunno. Perhaps call the doctor who referred you for surgery or whatever and ask? I definitely wouldn't pull it. Perhaps cut the end of it off if it is like, right in the way?

I had ordered one of these for myself while ordering Christmas gifts for other people (specifically, I got a green one just like that top picture):
http://www.belkin.com/pressroom/releases/uploads/09_12_06CushTop_PocketTop.html

It arrived today and I am pretty stoked. With all the nerdy aspects of my existence, it still felt like something of a new low when I realized I was sitting on my couch with this thing on my lap, fingers perched over imaginary keys, trying to visualize what it will be like when I finally get a new laptop.

Dear blog thread,

Yesterday, Glen, the older of my two stepbrothers, got engaged. The family has an annual Solstice Day hike (once for both solstices) and he asked her on Mission Peak, which is a hill-mountain-whatever in Fremont. I am really excited and happy for him and his lady! They've got a location pretty well thought of. If all goes well, it's going to be at the summer camp where they met as young'uns (and since he works for the park district that runs it, the spot is guaranteed almost to the degree of death and taxes). I am super excited for them!

I have also returned for one night to the inter-blags. The holidays suck, I do not like them, they are way too busy and stressful and OH GOD CROWDS, DO NOT WANT. I just want to go back home, at least in Albania I already expect people to do inexplicably retarded shit. Here it's just shameful. At least the people at the post office and the bank were really nice.

Oh and I went to a party last night and for the first time I saw a lot of my California friends drunk. It was kindof awkward, but then again, hanging out with them sober gets awkward just because of that "I am only in town maybe 25 days out of the year" thing.

Love,
Me!

You guys need to make sure that I am not photoshopping stuff when I'm short on sleep!

The past two nights I've had very vivid and realistic dreams. One involved myself and an ex girlfriend spending some time together in a bed (not even sexually), and then we were taking part in some sort of live action platforming game, I guess? After the last level we escaped back to her room where we both took giant gulps of whiskey so that we didn't have to play the next level.

The other was me and a group of people who looked a little bit like celebrities, but also people I might have known were playing some game. I think they called it Parkroar or something ridiculous that sounded like Parkour. Basically, you had to find a way to beat the other team to the top of whatever builiding was chosen next. At the point I joined the game, the building was the W hotel. It was a skyscraper and it took a good 2 hours (of dream time) to get to it. It was night time and we were running through hills, tiny villages, and then jumping from skyskraper to skyscraper trying to reach it. It ended up being a draw. So then we had a party on the top (which was apparently some sort of dessert club) before the manager came and tried to kick us out. We left via jumping a few buildings over and getting away through the tiny village.

I'm not gonna lie, they were pretty intense dreams!

God's Dead,

Fuck OpenSUSE.  Fuck it to hell.  I have to work with this shit today, it is completely useless.  Want to copy something?  Nope, file manager decides it doesn't want to work and you have to do everything by command line.  Want to delete crap?  Nope, it moves back to where it was on its own, without so much as asking for root access.  Want to do something else for 5 minutes?  No, the fucking desktop crashes and you have to restart that runtime.

This is an example of why programming an OS while you're drunk is a bad idea (Bloody Germans!).  The updater is offering fixes for memory leaks caused by the main menu.  OpenSUSE is what I bring up when people try to tell me how much better Linux is than anything else.

It is before noon and I'm awake and on the computer, so this means it is a BEATLES MORNING. It feels weird to listen to any music in the morning that isn't Beatles. Today's selection: Rubber Soul.

Okay so the weather is absolutely lovely today--cold and sunny with some pretty clouds--and the kids are out playing frisbee for the first time all break. I cannot go because of illness. I am very sad. I haven't played frisbee since August.

A day for good math news, then! I just found out that I passed my calculus 4-exam. I got an E, which pretty much sucks, but at least I passed it, when I didn't think I would, so one less exam to retake (at least for now, may want to improve it later). Awesomeness. I also got a C in programming languages, which was an awful class that I found really really difficult, so I'm pleased! Nice Christmas presents.

We just had the first family party of the Christmas season, with lutefisk and rice porridge for those (meaning everyone under 22) who didn't like lutefisk. Fuck, my family is loud. I'm used to a quiet dorm room now, and it's driving me slighly batshit. My grandmother's solution was to yell "Be quiet, everyone! I will talk now!!" every time she wanted to say something. But she never says anything that makes sense or that we haven't heard 5 times before anymore, so people sort of kept talking over her, and it just escalated into really really really loud talking. Fun times were had by all.

In other news, it saddens me that some old people just lose all sense of what is considered polite or "right" to say or not to say. I don't want to end up like that. My grandmother is pretty much awfully racist and awfully homophobic and will exclaim stuff like "Oh my God, how sad your candles are!", and when I said "What?", she went "They're not pretty at all!!", and that's one of the nicest things she said this evening. She will call black people on TV "soot pipes" and refuse to watch, and it kills me to listen to her sometimes.

Eghi'r eraghaghhh,

I don't really know what happened but although I didn't get good grades, I didn't fail anything and I'm not being given the option to finish incomplete work over the break. So I guess that is that. It's not the best, but my ass is safe, and will still be attending the same college come January.  Still need to deal with Issues though. In any case, it is a load off my mind and will make for a significantly less stressful winter break.

I've been home with my folks for 24 hours and i've managed to - fix the family computer so that it is now virus free, fix my mom's cell phone, shovel a 40-50 yard tunnel from the front of the house to the garage which required the use of a garden hoe to break up the ice layer below the 8 inches of snow, and go out for beer + pool with my BFF Andrew and his awful wife.

i constantly get roped into doing tech support for my family too. i've installed about five different anti-virus and/or anti-spyware programs on their home computer and explained very slowly and carefully how to use them as well as how to do a disk cleanup and how to defragment, but every time i visit it's still "oh, we just couldn't figure it out, and the computer is so slow, can you get it working again?" what do you mean you couldn't figure it out? you click the button that says "scan".

To be honest, I think many people simply dismiss the idea that they can learn how to use computers out of hand and envision worst case scenarios every time they have to improvise or work via context a bit. I've met many people who become suddenly overcautious when operating a pc, not just senior citizens, and I think it's worth mentioning that one of the things that makes young kids so good at learning is the simple fact that they tend to be more curious than cautious. I mean, yeah, kids do generally learn more quickly than older people for various developmental reasons, but on the other hand, a friend of mine has a grandmother who apparently learned how to use C++, so it's not like an old dog can't learn new tricks.

After all, I'm sure there's more than a few of us on the forums who don't really have all that much real theoretical knowledge of how exactly pcs work or have ever slapped together their own rig out of OEM components. But I'm also certain that many of these same people do just fine largely because they've never really questioned their ability to make a simple installation wizard work after a few tries. Hell, looking at my own skill set, I must admit that a lot of what I do when troubleshooting has more in common with voodoo than computer science, and my successes owe more to trial and error than anything else. I'm a lot more computer savvy than my younger sister is, but really the only thing that seperates us is the simple fact that I think I can make it work while she's always afraid of making it worse.

My actual dayjob is tech support! I am very good at this and explaining it in very dumb terms. I've made a notebook with several instructions for simple things for my family's use. Whenever they ask me about something like this i point to the notebook and frown.

My gay friend was just telling me how had a guy on MSN with a web cam doing whatever he wanted him to do. It was.. strange. Jake is so full of win.
He finds it funny how I can switch from Elliot Smith to Alice In Chains. Heh, I guess it would be to some.
OH GOD I AM SO BORED BUT THE SLEEP IS NOT COMING.
I've tried laying in my bed for a while and stuff but it didn't work.

So it is officially Christmas Eve. It's strange. Our house doesn't have decorations or anything. We just didn't do anything this here. We haven't had any Christmas spirit. It doesn't feel like Christmas at all. *sings Low* I hope my presents don't suck.
God jesus, I am so greedy. Here i am hoping my presents my don't suck when I didn't buy anyone anything over 10 dollars. I bet they all spent much more on me.
I remember last year my grandmother got me deodorant, body wash and a few packs of gum. My aunt got me a weird t-shirt that said Mom Likes Me Best. I'm not sure why. Not too sound like a whiny little bitch but I don't like Mom that much most of the time.

This was my fault but today she bitched at me because I do 'half-way jobs' on things. She yelled at me because the clothes that I folded weren't in the right rooms. I swear I don't understand her sometimes. OH GOD THE ANGST

Okay, we need to stop listening to Alice In Chains now. Let's listen to.... Sad Sappy Sucker.
Modest Mouse is amazing. This is my first time listening to this EP. Only yesterday, I downloaded their entire discography.
They have amazing album names. The Fruit That Ate Itself, Everywhere And His Nasty Parlour Tricks, Baron von Bullshit Rides Again. Seriously.

I'm going to read the topic summary.
I get roped into tech support too. I don't know why. I pretty much phail at computers. Well. Not really. I can fix some things.
My dad is like, "Jacob, the internet is slow."
I say, "I'm sorry."
He says, "Fix it."
I say, "How?"
He says, "I'm not sure. You can do it. You're good with computers."
I say, "Holy crap, this song is strange."

have any of you heard From Point A to Point B by Modest Mouse? The beginning is so awesome and random.

I'm going to stop talking now and try to sleep some more.

Goodnight.

tl;dr see: next actual post.

I've made a notebook with several instructions for simple things for my family's use. Whenever they ask me about something like this i point to the notebook and frown.

this is the best idea! including the pointing and frowning bit. thanks man.

Jacob, listen to the Lonesome Crowded West, thats one of my favorite Modest Mouse albums, also, in case you haven't already, go ahead and look up The Mountain Goats and The Arcade Fire. If you like Modest Mouse, you'll surely enjoy them.

It is Christmas Eve and I have about 5 hours to paint up my dad's present, I decided today "Holy shit, I should get my dad a present." I thought about painting a tank up like a Mustang GT (since I do 40k I have this shit lying around), but I need my tanks for my army, so it'll be just a regular marine painted up in the same colors as his car.

When me and my friends saw them for the first time opening for Arcade Fire, the comparison they made was "Drunken Bruce Springsteen".

Also I enjoy them much more than Modest Mouse.

There may be no words to that post, but I share his opinion.

Hey you, blog,

So it's Christmas Eve and I had to work today. I was cool with working today, but I was really hoping we'd be able to close by 3 or 4. I work Downtown and on holidays the city is dead by 3pm. There may be a few stragglers, but most of these people do not come into our store and usually there's no real benefit to staying open. All 6 of us were there today hoping the owner, who is in Maryland, would email the manager and say we could leave at 4. Nope. Dude is all NY minded, as that's where he's from, so we have to work until 5. My manager was off at 2, like normal, and our district manager has her office in our store. She hung around until 4 and then decided to leave. Our framer takes off around 4-ish as well. So three of us had to stay that extra hour and twiddle our thumbs on Christmas Eve because no one came into our store after 3:30. I sent the other two off early and closed the store before 5. And since we get faxes from the other two stores with their closing paperwork, I noticed I wasn't the only one who decided that working that late was pointless. Silly people.

i want to say this is a generational thing

hah yeah right my youngest sister is terrible at keeping her computer running smoothly. Actually, I once mused that it was a generational issue but in the other direction. As in, I grew up when computer resources were so restricted that I am really stingy about how much crap is on my harddrive or how many applications I have running. She on the other hand downloads a bajillion things a day and routinely installs every little screensaver she encounters on this wide internet.

I sense that a lot of people are like her, and that's what keeps computer manufacturers in business. Like, every time she gets a new computer it gradually grinds to a halt, at which point she purchases a new computer and the cycle continues.

Man, I feel like an asshole right now. As mentioned in Gabbly Meebo, my brother (who, by the way, is 20, although this story will probably make him seem about 10 years younger) was a bit of a douche today (as he is a lot of time - temper issues and all that jazz, but he has his nice moments, I guess), and he basically spent all of post-dinner Christmas eve in his room. Didn't join the rest of the family for opening presents or anything like that. The whole thing started with us siblings joking around, and I took a picture of him as a joke while he tried to hide. Fair enough, he doesn't like getting his picture taken (neither do I, but he tries to film me and shit all the time, but I don't freak out because of it), but we were all just messing around. He asked me to delete it, I said "Hold on a sec", because I was just doing something else on my cell phone at the time, and then he just grabbed my arm and started twisting it back/mauling it and freaking out entirely, causing my arm to still hurt hours later. He screamed and all kinds of things, so the child in me told him that as long as he was acting like a fucking moron, I wouldn't delete it - not that I could in that position, anyways. Stupid response by me? Yes. Overreaction on his part? Yes. But then he, as mentioned, ran up to his room and stayed there, so his Christmas Eve was pretty fucking awful, I'd assume. And now there's a note on his door saying "Don't wake me up for Christmas breakfast.", and all his presents are still under the tree. I feel like it is all my fault that his Christmas is basically being spent in his room, pissed off.

I was kind of okay with it all until I saw the note on his door. Now I feel really really bad, and I also fear that he will try to get back at me in some way, so I'm going to sleep with my cell phone under my pillow and my suitcase locked. This sucks. Should I feel bad? I know he overreacts to all kinds of stuff, but it still feels like I'm the one to blame here, all of a sudden :/

ETA: Forgot to mention that I deleted the photo after he ran off, and he came back a while later, demanded to check through everything I had on my cell phone to confirm that it was deleted (even though my dad confirmed it), and when I denied him that because, well, it's my cell phone and my personal business, he walked off again, and didn't come back. It bugs me that I feel really, really bad even though writing this makes me realize that while it may be my fault, he could've easily not had a shitty Christmas eve.
