Don't forget that Veronica is a dom.  She's used to being the boss.  Combine that with the fact she's Marten's mom, and spent the first 18 years of his life having a major say in what he did, and she might have a bit of trouble with Marten arguing against her decisions.  I would imagine in general it's not something that happened much when he was a kid given that he can be a bit passive at times.

Method of Madness:
I still think Vicky was a flimsy pretense to move thousands of miles away from his mom. Not to say he doesn't love her, but he saw an opportunity to live his own life and took it, even if he didn't know it at the time.
