A joy to look forward to.  We're still on Office 2010, 'cos Outlook 2013 won't talk to Exchange 2003, which I've not managed to phase out yet.  (Soon, soon...)

Working for the government with people who have been here for 400 years you have to have everything IT-related absolutely locked down so that people don't hurt themselves. So, no. I can't even change the resolution on my screen without logging a call with the IT helpdesk.

I think they're implemented through autocorrect; it might be worth seeing if you can affect that.

I probably should've been clearer - if the setting exists and is editable by me, I can't find it. But again, half of the features that I know exist have been stripped out for the kid glove treatment the IT people give here.

There was one time at my high school computer science class that my login session accidentally had some of those restrictions lifted, so I could access the graphics control panel and such. Before I left I flipped the screen upside down and logged off. An hour later, my computer science teacher pulled me out of my other class to make me fix it, and I had to go to the IT office to make them log onto the computer remotely with admin privileges to fix it. That was amusing.

Try This....

Open Microsoft Outlook (if it’s not already open).
Fire up the Options panel (found under the File ribbon).
Click open the Mail tab. You should see a “Spelling and Autocorrect…” button. The “Editor Options” panel will launch.
From there, click the “AutoCorrect Options…” button. The “AutoCorrect: English (U.S.)” properties pane is what you should see next.
Under the default “AutoCorrect” tab, look to the “Replace text as you type” section.
Click the “Delete” button.
Repeat these steps for the other smiley auto-replacements.

So they locked you out of Autocomplete?   That's fucking absurd.

Can you at least choose Richtext/HTML vs plain text?   Plain Text should not auto correct to emoticons.

Mocking student elections requires a special art, and Soviet Bear is one of my favorites.

In other news, I really hate that that people keep calling the new Lindsey Sterling vid "steampunk" it's not. Even vaguely. Please see the video below for more information.

It is one of these, a style of traditional Chinese "concertina" book, broken in the middle. There is another part in her left hand where you can see the pages. The broken book symbolises the destruction of old ways of thinking, and their replacement with Chairman Mao Thought. The original poster dates from the Cultural Revolution. I think this particular example is Thai:

In my spoof poster, it was obviously Soviet Bear's agenda that was to be rejected.
