Actually, I think this would suck a massive bag of dicks. Empire has some dark moments, but Star Wars is not dark.
Vader crushing Captain Antilles' throat, shooting down escape pods with life signs, the slaughtered Jawas, Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru as charred, smoking skeletons, Han shot first!, the destruction of Alderaan and its population of millions (billions?), the death of Obi Wan, the "many Bothans" who gave their lives to get the information on the Death Star, the over 50% casualties in the fighters who carried out the attack? Star Wars might not have been gritty, but it had plenty of darkness, despite George Lucas' attempts to pretend otherwise (Han shot first!).
Yes, and I acknowledged as much, but my point was that I wouldn't want a gritty Star Wars movie. You can have darkness without being a dark movie. Most of the greatest kids' movies have darkness without being dark.
There is nothing wrong (FAO:Method) with things being dark or gritty, my issue is that
EVERYTHING is now dark and gritty. Every time something gets rebooted now, it's to make it darker and grittier. Why can we not strike a balance? The MCU is one of the few things that has both darkness and light in equal measure, everything else is just dark, dark, dark, dark. Even fucking comedies are going super dark these days, and I'm talking mainstream successful ones like The Hangover series. And I am just sick of it.
Art is a three ring circus. If you don't like the clowns, maybe you'll like the elephants or the strongman or some shit, so why is such a vast proportion of the movies being released just clown after clown after clown?
