The Pistols were as manufactured and money hungry as the Spice Girls were. Depending on how you look at it, that makes them more punk or less punk. The Ramones worked with fucking Phil Spector. Again, super punk or not at all punk depending on your opinion. The Clash are great but overrated. The Buzzcocks are who we have to blame for the likes of Green Day and Green Day are to blame for Simple Plan ergo The Buzzcocks are to blame for Simple Plan.

I wouldn't call The Jam punk in any sense, really. But then I wouldn't call them anything but expletives because despite having some great songs, I fucking hate Paul Weller and could not give you a single reason why.

Don't forget Stiff Little Fingers, and both The Damned and Siouxsie before they went goth.  And of course, there's the Dead Kennedys, Phil Chevron's first band (blanking on the name right now), etc.

IIRC, Chevron was in the Radiators before the Pogues.

Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮 pronouced Joo-guh Leeang with a hard G, incidentally) was an all-round genius whose name is still synonymous in China with culture, scholarship and intellect. He was what we call a "strategist" rather than a "general"; in the context of his time, a general put on armour and commanded troops on the battlefield. The famous partnership between Sun Bin (strategist) and Tian Ji (general), in the service of Qi during the Warring States era, illustrates the distinction.

Yeah Sun Bin is a descendent of Sun Tzu.  It was quite slow today at work so I started wikipedia-ing Chinese history.

Say what you will. To me, the Pistols were the Marilyn Manson of their day: manufactured nihilism. Musically, they were a dead end from the start (but they paved the way for PiL, so they get a provisional pass). And the Ramones were just conservatives in cooler clothes, basically playing Chuck Berry on amphetamines. Their schtick gets too old too fast, too.

I disagree with Gaz about the Clash being overrated. To be clear, I don't think they lived up to their own hype, but they were one of a handful of bands from that time (Wire also comes to mind) that managed to break genuinely new ground because they realized the limitations of punk and at some point -- lip service aside -- basically stopped giving a fuck whether they were punk or not. That, I'd submit, makes them and others of their ilk more punk than a lot of the rest of their peers.

My favorite punk rock band was formed in Dublin in the late 1970's. They made a few records, went on a few tours, got world-famous, and now...

...now, they give away their albums on iTunes. ;)

(Yes, U2 started out as a punk rock band. They emigrated full-on to "rock" later.)

U-2 is a reconnaissance aircraft. And Wikipedia has so little sense of history that "U-2" links to the band instead of the plane.

I got to watch the planes taking off and landing while I was in Cali this summer. Their wheel base is so jacked up they need a chase car (a very fast sports car) with another U-2 pilot in it to race along behind them and call distance to deck and angle of approach for the pilot in air.

Depends. I'm more scared of bears generally, but that's because I'm much more likely to encounter a bear. I guess if there's more lions around, you worry about those instead.

That, and "lion" isn't a term that's merely a euphemism for a creature considered so horrific that its original name is lost in many languages.

Moose can be scary beasts.  I witnessed the results of a Moose vs. JB Hunt semi-truck encounter.  The semi arrived at the JB Hunt depot on two separate flatbed trailers.  According to the driver, the moose was last seen wandering off into the Alaska woods with 6 shots from a .44 (no less, no more) and apparently no worse for wear.

Moose weigh in at LEAST half a ton, and there's reports of examples at a ton and some change in remote Alaska.

Alaska: It's like Australian, but less poisonous and way colder.

Also if you haven't read The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce and you proclaim to love snark and sarcasm... I'm not sure we can be friends.
