I don't.... really see any of that as that crazy really. More turtles then I would have expected, but pretty much normal at an Asian grocer around here. Cept for the more exotic fresh stuff like shark.

indeed. people in other countries eat different kinds of food from what we're used to? not that crazy of a concept.

the 'diet water' thing was a bit funny though,

I agree. It looks a lot like the Korean markets I go to around here, only with more meat out for the customers to see/pick though. Safety regulations and all. Down to and including tanks of all sorts of live food critters. I haven't seen tanks of frogs yet though.

In SF, I tended to go to Chinese markets almost exclusively (better prices and all).  The live and unknown (since I couldn't read the label) stuff didn't bother me at all, but it was kinda strange when I was on the tram and seeing that there was something in someone's bags that was moving.  It almost made me a veggie.

Ok......the "meat water" sounds pretty nasty.

Maybe I'm just being overly sensitive about this, but isn't is some kind of health hazard to have all that meat loose and out in the open? With everyone picking through it, all I can see is bacteria. I mean....they packaged the frozen reptile parts, why not package the fresh stuff too?

Is this more common than I think?

The "meat water" one is fake; it's a photoshopped VitaminWater label. Plus if it were actually Chinese, it would have Chinese writing on it, and the amount would be in mL instead of fluid ounces.

not sure why i  didn't think to mention this before, but i actually went to a chinese walmart in 2010, getting provisions for a long train ride. didn't see any of that sort of stuff, but then i didn't go into the fresh-food section, if there was one. honestly, i didn't find it to be significantly different from a n. american one.

The only thing out of all of that stuff that seems in any way crazy was the crocodile with an orange in it's mouth. From the couple of times I've eaten crocodile, it doesn't seem like orange would be a good partner food. Also, I wouldn't have thought that the orange would survive the amount of time you would need to spend roasting it.

Of course, that's just based on my limited experience. I'm prepared to accept that there is some kind of crocodile tongue and marmalade delicacy in parts of China and, if you told me that with some degree of sincerity, I would probably give it a go. I'm mindful though that this is exactly the sort of mentality that is responsible for the British appetite for the dish we like to call Vindaloo.

All the other stuff in that link make a lot of sense to me to be selling en masse to Chinese people. I would imagine that you would find a lot of equivalents in American Walmarts. Maybe the live food would have a hard time being pared up. In all honesty, I would rather be cooking with some of the stuff in that gallery than the 10kg bags of minced beef and chicken wings I know you can buy in some Walmarts in the US.

Interesting anecdote for all you USAnians though. I went on to the Walmart website to check if I could link to the huge economy bags of frozen meat. I didn't find it, but I got the usual stuff I would expect like ground beef, jerky, beef sticks etc. Then I noticed there was another check box down the side for Frog. Out of curiosity I selected that as well. No surprises, the bag of pre-prepared frogs legs popped up in the products available. But so did, corned beef, more jerky options, burgers and my personal favourite - steak. I don't have an issue with eating frog, I've quite enjoyed it before, but if I ever come to the US again, I'm going to be very selective about the meat that I eat. This puts the Tesco horsemeat saga look barely off species.

Nothing in particular other than it's authenticity as an "Indian" dish is questionable at best. The common incarnation in curry houses acrosd the UK is very far removed from it's origins and only marginally less so from any part of India.

I figured it was bastardized, but I got the impression that it actually started out as an actual dish (southern India, I think)? I tend to gravitate a bit more toward the Punjabi stuff, personally.

According to the Wikipedias, it's a British adaptation of an Indian adaptation of a Portuguese dish.

Another bunch of ninnies falls for the meat-water hoax, but otherwise it just shows how provincial they are; I could show you most of that in the shops round here, though admittedly I live in something of a Chinatown. Nothing unusual to see there, move along.

It is especially hilarious to see the writers amazed that you can buy expensive booze in fancy presentation boxes. I mean... where can't you do that? Islamic states? East Podunk, Nebraska? OK, in Australia you can't by them inside a supermarket, just in the bottle-shop just outside the door that is owned by the supermarket. Because that makes all the difference, right?

The third of those Russian goons to have a go at the boxer is obviously a very slow learner.

Another point of interest. In the West a lot of people are revulsed at sausages and racks of ribs left open to the air but enthuse about well hung steak and spend lavishly on air-cured ham. They like a McMuffin with chicken egg in it but balk at the idea of eggs from other sepcies of bird. I'm not sure how  it is in the rest of the world but Western consumerism is very weirx in it's hyper-homogenisation.

Considering flavored water is something of a thing in the US, it does't surprise me that people would fall for meat water. In fact, I'm surprised nobody has thought of it. As far as fancy boxed liquors go, the surprise was more of a 'they have it in Wal-mart' than anything else. In states where it's legal to sell alchohol in grocery stores, it's common to have a beer and wine section. But it tends to be pretty much just lower-scale bottles and cases of beer. You won't find top shelf liquor.. or often any kind of whiskey at all, at your local Wal-mart or super marts. You would go to a package store for that.

Garand, is that a Tibetan Mastiff?

i saw that picture a few days ago on reddit; apparently, it's a leonberger.

when i saw the pic i totally wanted a dog like that. then someone pointed out that they only live for ~7 years, and i was sad.

also, picking up it's shits and hair would be a whole other thing.
