ITT we quantify the value of musicians past and present.

I'm laughing pretty damn hard right now. Frusciante he ain't, that's for sure.

As much as I love Led Zep, I think that Jimmy Page is overrated and the least talented member of the band.

Thrillho

I can't stand the vast majority of Led Zeppelin's catalogue regardless.

lol Hitler.....wow.  :-P

I think the biggest difference between Josh and John is that when John plays, you fucking feel it. He just pours his guts out onto everything and it gets all over you. Josh gets a few points for being able to parrot everything that John has played in the past, plus the new stuff is decent in the sense that I can listen to it and still enjoy the feel of the Chilis. But it's definitely not the same.

If you try to take all the steps at once, you'll fall over.

Thrillho

That's the issue with Josh's own playing too, of course. He is doing an impression of John.

He gets zero from me, I've been able to do that since my third year playing guitar. Fuck Josh.

RHCP while fun live haven't made a good album since the 90s and John Frusciante's solo music blows.

All I know is that I can't stand Plant's voice.  At all.  Fingernails on chalkboard.

Thrillho

Add me to that. And his lyrics are dogshit. There's not many 'legendary' musicians who make me think 'Jesus, my stuff is better than this.'

Just sayin'

I know he didn't write most (I think one song is his), but this is proof of his talent at the very least.

As for Jimmy page, I dare you all to say that this isn't impressive as fuck. And if you say it's because it's in an open tuning you can fuck the fuck right off

"Cock's Fresh Prepared steak"

Thrillho

So it took him 38 years to write a good lyric? WHAT A MUSIC LEGEND

Seriously though, I may not have specified, but I meant in Led Zeppelin. In a band with an incredible guitarist, a multi-talented bassist, and a unique but in my opinion massively overrated drummer, you had a squealy motherfucker writing fucking LOTR/stolen blues lyrics as their frontman.

Metal bands should just stop trying to "hit it big" because that genre will never be something you can make a decent living off of anyway. It's pathetic to watch.

B-but it's in open tuning!

I kid, that is impressive, I just think that in comparison to Bonham and Jones he's not quite on the same level of talent, that however doesn't mean that I don't like the band, I don't share a lot of the other opinions in this thread and you'll often find me rocking out to immigrant Song or Black Dog. Also, Physical Graffiti is their best album.

My current gripe: Ukeleles. Fucking everyone seems to be throwing away their real instruments and releasing quaint little indie-folk songs on fucking ukeleles. Any band that does this does not deserve to call themselves a band.

I've always wanted to play the last song in a set on a uke and then smash it at the end to make some kind of point.

On annoying trends: In Belgium at least there's a 'burgeoning' DIY punk scene. Just because you're DIY, doesn't mean you're amazing and troopunx man.

Gave Plant/Krauss an honest listen last night.  Was reasonably impressed until Plant started to wail.  Seriously, he needs to just stay muted imo.

Can I just say there is a massive difference between that ^ and what I was referring to. I'm talking about the fact that every time I go out, I seem to see so many ukelele bands with such little talent. That dude's got talent. He's exempt.

So I guess that a ukulele player trying to fiddle with the mixer while playing would be the worst of the worst!

I had to stop busking at a Pt Adelaide market because some douche with a uke wanted to play a set. She was so bad that people were actually coming up to me as I was packing up my piano and giving me money instead. Like, stepping over her tip jar to give me money.

.. I suppose I should feel kinda bad about it, but eh. MONEY. :parrot:

Not so much of a shitstir as a question:

How far do you think the intro to "Who are you" by The Who was influenced by hiphop?
I think it's an incredibly hip-hop intro.
By accident or on purpose? :)

Thrillho

Townsend's influences at the time were pushing more towards disco (no, really) and punk than hip-hop to my knowledge. He was trying to be a bit more boundary-free with his work but I'm not sure if hip-hop was on his radar by then.
