MOMENT OF THE WEEK TIME!

Hanners is DIZZY over the ROMANCE!
Does she ever get bummed out about it? (Physical contact?)
Not really. She can't handle it NOW, but maybe someday!
And those 8 gigs of sexy fireman pics from Pintsize? (Only FOUR, and she prefers cowboys now.)
Mom explains it all to Marten
Stop talking and let me be happy for you. (Yes dear.)
Marten is suddenly hesitant: What if it doesn't work out?
You can't live life without taking any risks.
What if you don't know what risks to take? Then take a bunch!
No basement to move back into, though.
Nice cuddle times by the TV...
You're supposed to go to the movies and fancy dinners and stuff.
All we do is play video games and watch anime and make out.
Well, do you wanna do that stuff?
Meh. This is nice.
In the middle of makeouts: BAM BAM BAM! (Oh for the love of - )
Hey buddy! It's me! May!
"SHIT" "Nice to see you too, ass-dick."

And that makes it better how...? ;)

Forum popularity aside, you couldn't be further from the May in the comic, and that is precisely why I like you.

My question is, WHY IS MAY STILL CYAN?????

Possibly so Jeph could drop this on us (the monster!) on a Friday and have us recognise her straight away. If she was (e.g.) green, we might have just gone 'Huh, some robot that Dale knows', and needed another strip to explain it.

What's the term for a human-form AnthroPC? Is there one?
Eh, I recognized her from the cussing. Her new look doesn't really look like her previous look to me anyway.

The difference is AI vs. AnthroPC. Station and Spaceship are AI's. Momo and Pintsize are AnthroPC's. May was a holographic AI; she's now an AnthroPC.

My question is, WHY IS MAY STILL CYAN?????

She's not  a personal hologram in a set of Glasses anymore. When she embodied, why would she embody into a chassis with the skin color her prison form had?

If this is a body issued by the prison, she may not have had a choice. If may of course be a body she had before going to prison. The body seems made not to be frightening. Human looking enough that she does not look monstrous, and blue to avoid "uncanny valley".

I didn't realize people actually used the word "cyan", what's wrong with "blue"?

It's a different colour?

Actually, I guess you'd be right at home in Japan, where they have a single word for the whole range of colours that we call blue and green; also Vietnamese and a couple of other languages.  Sometimes the boundaries are different; for instance, traditionally in Welsh, even though there are separate words for blue and green, the colour of grass comes on the blue side of the divide.

I've noticed before that I tend to put the blue-green border and the blue-purple border in different places than most people. Essentially my definition of blue is a bit broader than that of most Americans. Even so, grass is still green, except in Kentucky.

Yeah, if you want to get technical, blue is #0000FF, but "blue" as a general concept is a whole bunch of different shades. May's hair and her skin can both be considered blue. I don't think there's enough green there to consider it not blue.

So I looked up wavelength ranges for cyan on Wikipedia, and found out they define the dye laser I use in the lab as cyan rather than green (it's 510 nm and they define cyan as 490-520 nm). I say they're full of shit. I look at that laser and I see green.

... wait, who writes these articles? The wavelength range they give for green is 495-570 nm, which almost completely overlaps the cyan range. Blue it says is 450-495 nm, which overlaps the rest of cyan's range.

So, according to Wikipedia, cyan is green. Unless it's between 490-495 nm, in which case it's blue. :psyduck: Oh, and the university's parking enforcement people agree with Wikipedia. My car is cyan (which to me looks blue), and when I got a ticket, they marked it on the ticket as being green.

Aside from Wikipedia's definition, the argon laser in my lab operates at 480 nm, and that looks cyan to me. The 476 nm line looks blue, though. If I were to come up with a wavelength range for cyan it would be more biased toward the blue. Probably something like 480-505 nm.

I'd say that cyan is exactly in the middle between blue and green. Some shades of cyan are shades of blue, some are shades of green.

If it can be on either side, it's not exactly exact then, is it?

Cyan is a mix of blue and green (if a monochromatic laser looks cyan, it's because it triggers both blue and green receptors in our eyes).

Just like purple is a mix of blue and red (and if monochromatic violet looks purple, it's because the red receptors are more sensitive to violet than the green receptors are, and our experience of colour depends on the relative values of red/green and likewise on blue/(red+green), and not on the absolute values of red, green and blue).

Pink?  Pale shades of red and/or reddish purple.

You can't have a dark shade of pink; that's a contradiction in terms.  You can have dark shades of cyan.  Indeed, it's derived from Greek kýanos, "dark blue".

Colours are messy. :)

I'll take a wild guess and suppose it works similarly as in Breton. In Breton, the word "glas" covers a range of color as they are found in the environment, including grass, the sky, and the various colors the sea can show (which means some kinds of grey are covered as well). Separately, the word "gwer" is the specific word for green as found in clothing, crafted object, and eyes. My guess is Breton "glas" and "gwer" work similarly to their Welsh cognates "glas" and "gwyrdd/gwerdd".

Okay.  I went by the dictionary.com definition: "a color varying from light crimson to pale reddish purple", but I see that other definitions, like the World English Dictionary's, are less restrictive: "any of a group of colours with a reddish hue that are of low to moderate saturation and can usually reflect or transmit a large amount of light; a pale reddish tint".

The corresponding term in Norwegian ("rosa") is restricted to light/pale shades of red, so I guess you can say my ideas have been (applying shades) coloured by that.

The Himba people of Namibia see colors differently than we do (and use half of the terms English have for colors). You can check it out in this video (starting at around 1:00). Particularly, they can tell apart some hues (shades?) of green we cannot - but have trouble differentiating between blue and green.

This documentation is one of the few to blow my mind.

Thinking about it some more, I'm wondering if May's chassis may have been issued by Robot Jail in the same color for the same reason that prison uniforms are typically orange: visibility. The peak of human color perception is near the cyan part of the spectrum, so, as long as she's not hiding near plant material (which is the reason orange is typically used instead of cyan), she'd probably be easy to see. Plus she'd stand out in a crowd.

The real reason is probably just that she likes the color blue.

Just for fun: pink was traditionally considered a kind of red. Red is considered a warm color. Warm colors are associated with, well, warmth, and heat. In classical Greek elementalism, which influenced later (western) alchemy, heat is the primary characteristic of Fire, and the secondary characteristic of Air. Fire and Air are the masculine elements. Red, and it's variant pink, were primary masculine colors up until the early twentieth century. The "pink is for girls, blue is for boys" meme, ubiquitous in the West, is actually an artifact of an advertisement campaign for... I'm not sure what really. Maybe diapers.

But the most fun thing is that there are so-called scientists who look for a genetic reason for girls to prefer pink and boys to prefer blue... And those frauds manage to get funding!

Okay, I admit it's a bit more sadder than it is funny.

Red has been a masculine color for a LONG time; but the primary reason for its use in the United States as a color for sports teams lays pretty much at the feet of Harvard University. The color crimson has been associated with the school since its founding prior to the Revolutionary War.

Part of the reason why blue took over as the preferred colour for boys, was that blue dyes traditionally were rare and expensive (hence "royal" blue); indeed so expensive that only the best clothes of very rich people were blue.  So when blue dyes suddenly became cheaper, they at first still had that air of richness.

... and of course, only the best was good enough for the little boys ...
