Well, cats and dogs show affection because you feed them and don't beat them and provide them with shelter.

True, but dogs and cats are slightly more affectionate and intelligent than the average snake. Affection is a little complex an emotion for say, a snake. A dog will nuzzle you happily to be close to you. A snake will curl up with you because you're warm and they're chilly.
