What should Gareth do in Amsterdam in August?

Hi folks. I'm going to Amsterdam in late August (not specifying the actual dates methinks just because I am paranoid). First of all, forumites in and around Holland, anyone fancy meeting up? I threatened a coffee or something with me, my lady and BeoPuppy but I know we have some other European forumites who may be close enough to come in and hang.

But I'd also like some tips. I've not been abroad since my age was in the single digits so any advice would be great. I'm going for five days, how much money will I need? What is there to do there? Are there any customs I need to be observing, lest I offend anyone?

I have nothing to suggest, but I'd like to point out your thread title is kinda clickbaity..

The Anne Frank museum is worth a visit. I don't really remember doing a lot else when I was there - but I spent the entire time in a feverish haze from a virus so that's not surprising.

I would also recommend the Anne Frank House. I haven't seen it myself, but heard some very good accounts of it.

Also, I am jealous. I have only been in the Netherlands once (and not in Amsterdam), but I liked it a lot and I really want to go to Amsterdam, too! The canals in the Dutch cities give everything a great atmosphere and the old town houses are very pretty. I would go boating on a canal if possible (maybe rent a canoe if that's possible?). And Dutch is a very nice sounding language, I think - I would like to learn it some day.

I know that lots of tourists come just for the pot, but that is really a shame because the Netherlands have so much more to offer (not sure whether you can even still buy marihuana as a tourist - I am not interested in drugs at all myself, but I know that the imposed some more regulations for foreigners).
