--- Quote from: sitnspin on 17 Sep 2014, 07:06 ---Mass is the best place I have lived so far. The laws related to equality are pretty awesome, at least by the standards of the USA.

I keep telling a schoolteacher friend of mine from North Carolina that she should move to Massachusetts. Not only would she be able to marry her partner, but we also pay our teachers a living wage.

--- Quote from: Neko_Ali on 17 Sep 2014, 06:40 ---A quick moment of research reveals that it is pretty easy comparatively to get the gender marker on your ID changed in Massachusetts. All that is required is a letter from a medical professional that is treating you stating that you are the gender you identify as. Much easier than many other states which require proof of bottom surgery or just never allow it at all. So in all likelihood Claire's ID matches her gender.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to start making plans to move to Massachusetts...

--- End quote ---

That's awesome. As someone who has unreasonable anxiety in the face of bureacratic or H.R.-intensive paperwork and red tape, I just imagined it would be tougher.

Man, I  love living in a non-shitty U.S. state.

--- Quote from: Loki on 17 Sep 2014, 02:38 ---I am sorry, I did not mean it to come across as that. I meant that the implication was (I think) that he wouldn't do a "let's milk Claire's trans status for drama" story arc (then again, I may be misremembering).

--- End quote ---

No apology necessary, but thank you.

And true, but consider a few things:

-Jeph clearly stated that, when researching for Claire's backstory, he was horrified by the violence that trans people often face
-Clinton's pathological concern for Claire's safety has to have been a smoking gun of some kind.
-The gang is clearly at a townie bar outside of downtown, all of which in Northampton are like half roughneck/half hipster. The locals aren't always as friendly and welcoming and open-minded as that town as a whole takes pains to be.

To some extent (Claire' Ativan moment, her coming out to Marten and Emily in the first place) there's already been SOME drama about it.

--- End quote ---

If I had to guess I'd say they are at Hugo's which is still in Northampton proper.

--- End quote ---

Either Hugo's or Ye Olde Watering Hole. Or if this was taking place in 2004 or earlier, maybe Silent Cal's. I used to live in the apartments just above Ye Olde, and split my time between there and Hugo's equally. And yeah, they're both in NoHo proper, but those four blocks down from Main St. feel like a whole other world.

--- Quote ---So Claire is a recently-begun graduate student, right? And she started transitioning in college?

Well, it's a college town, so a 23-24 y/o is gonna get carded.

At what point, do you suppose, even in lib-ruhl Massachusetts, is a trans person able to change his or her gender designation on official government ID or other documents?

Claire gets carded, bartender makes some comment in front of everyone, involuntary outing?

My first thought was that Wil is the bartender and Claire's with Wil's friends, so no need to check ID. But Jeph's gone to great pains to show us that this is a different bar.

Could be a whole other kind of drama on its way.
--- End quote ---

I live in NY, which has pretty similar laws for changing your gender marker on your ID. I have friends in Mass, we compared. It only took me a couple months to do so, although most of that was because of my laziness. Really, it only took a couple weeks. I had to be on hormones for about 3 -4 months then my doctor gave me a letter which I took to the DMV and they changed it no problem.

--- Quote from: Method of Madness on 15 Sep 2014, 15:30 ---I want a montage with Steve trying out different cereals.

--- End quote ---

I would read the hell out of that.
