The fact is that all this whispering and backbiting is just reminding Joyce of an unwelcome fact: Her home community isn't really all that good at doing 'Christian' where it matters - Love, peace and kindness. They're great at judgement, piety and self-righteousness but Jesus was pretty firm at condemning that sort of behaviour, especially from anyone who isn't perfect themselves.

It is so hard not to introduce my own religious beliefs into the conversation to keep to the politeness rule... But I think Hank has almost got it right. The important thing is to do good. Not get caught up in the details and the dogma. Unfortunately, that is rarely the comfortable or easy path, since most would rather just do whatever is least painful to them to get by.

I think Hank means well, and is more on Joyce's side in this ans will stand up to Carol for her in his own way, but I also think Joyce has to find her own balance in this as much as Hank has and not be as immovably rigid as Carol seems to be.

I suppose I could interpret it as 'Mike's being nice, he's checking up on a friend who's feeling down.' I counter with: Mike probably heard that Amber was upset and Ethan was going to cheer her up.
