WCDT 22 - 26 December 2014 (Strips 2860-2864)
« on: 21 Dec 2014, 06:16 »

So, folks, we're coming to the end of another year of QC with surprises, twists and controversy. But what do you think will be the closing twist of 2014? What will Jeph do to lure us into another year? Vote in the poll to tell me your ideas!

Me...? I'd be more than a little interested to learn more of Emily's background through the prism of her interactions with Clinton. Might she let stuff slip (we know she isn't great with secrets when she gets excited)? I wonder if the truth about her might be the biggest shock we have yet? What if she's a different kind of person from any we've encountered to date? What if she's like a little boy named David?

Maybe, like David, she isn't fully aware of who and what she is. It would certainly open up a new front in the whole 'what makes a human' question if we have a character who is indistinguishable from a (weird) human in every meaningful way except the detail of her physical construction.

Well, that's one out there idea, at least! I can think of others, as you can probably tell from the poll! Enjoy!

Emily's not revealed as a robot...everyone else is! Now she must fight for survival as the rest of the cast tries to assimilate her.

I want to pick option 5 for the poll, but I'm preeetty sure that's going to be strip 3000.

...I'm picking it anyway!

Option three should be "Tai pops the Big Question to Dora" really, for the symmetry if nothing else.

Also, I wouldn't say Marten and Claire have been taking it "slow," since they've only been dating for what, 2 days, 3 tops?  Claire might be ready to break some speed limits, but so far they're cruising along at an ordinary pace.

And I'm pretty sure Veronica is in her early or mid-50s, so another child is probably out of the picture--but that doesn't matter, since Marten is about to get a little sister anyway, and if that's the case, there's clearly some bigger news on the horizon...

(Unless you were already hinting at a wedding.  In which case, carry on.)

We already have the technology, although it's only debatably safe. Frankly, I kept the poll answers as vague as possible because I wanted to give voters as much 'wiggle room' as possible as to what they mean and what it would mean in-universe.

Yep, saw that on the Wiki after posting. 0

So many options I want to click, so many I can't if I click one.

There needs to be an all-of-the-above option, just in case Jeph surprises us on New Year's Day by dropping a thirty-page comic featuring the double wedding of Tai & Dora and Veronica & Jim on the space station, now owned by Hannelore (now OCD- and other-mental-issues-free, thanks to an experimental nanotech treatment); and where, following the reception, Faye drinks herself into a stupor and hooks up with Hannelore's dad, and Marten and Claire take their relationship to the next level, in zero-gravity.  We also meet Hannelore's younger sister, Harriet, whose problems are even more severe and who spends most of her time heavily sedated (and, in her more lucid moments, talks about birds and orbs and bandicoots), and Emily's big secret is revealed.

THE END.

Also Gladstone's proposal needs Marigold's space suitor and Dale in the ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny.

In order to protect Dale, May declares herself his proxy.  Francis York retaliates with his own battle-mech.

May smiles, cracks her knuckles, and charges into the ring.

Two things immediately jump to mind. Firstly, I've got a feeling that 'slapstick' is going to be the rule this week. Secondly, this is a new artistic style, isn't it? Greyscale and lots of unusual angles for showing the characters.

Also... Am I the only one who heard the roar of the crowd when Harriet hit her homer?

Looks like the art from the first ST/YB/Shame Orb/etc arc from a couple of years back (which I preferred to doing it in the same style as the "normal" strips. Helps make it stand out)

Not a fan of violence against women in any way but at least she is giving better than she got.

The general feel to strip 2860 is reminiscent of the British alternate comedy series Bottom. I'm pretty sure that's setting the scene for the whole 'story' - No plot worth mentioning other than the framing for a series of violent and foul-mouthed encounters between the characters.

The difference being that violence against women is often normalized.

The difference being that violence against women is often normalized.

I constantly see ads for battered womens shelters and the like
I also constantly see fights between men being televised and sold on pay-per-view.

edit:
seriously... we men are taught from childhood: "don't hit girls"... violence against women is vilified above all else save violence against children.
tell me again how violence against women is more "normalized" than violence against men?

if you're going to be against violence, be against violence...  not just violence against (subset of humanity X)

Violence is fine as long as all parties consent, like when two men on pay-per-view hit each other for fun or money.  It's highly unlikely that either participant is there against their will.  Whereas the person on the receiving end of violence in an abusive relationship would really prefer not to be hit.  I can't believe anyone even needs to explain the difference to you.

except the point i was addressing was the "normalization" of violence.
that some men more consent to violence only reinforces that violence against men is more "normal" than violence against women.

men who are the targets of domestic violence are told to "man up" and "deal with it"
women who are the targets of domestic violence are offered myriad options for help... and occasionally blamed for not leaving sooner.

And Neko_Ali was talking about normalisation of interpersonal violence. They are completely different things and I am sick of the constant "oh, it's a double standard!" which just contrasts bar fights to abusive relationships without actually supporting male victims of domestic violence.
