Mad Max: Fury Road
Method of Madness:
Honestly I thought the flashbacks to his failure was how they were choosing to do the origin story, rather than spending a whole movie on it. Didn't realize it was referencing another movie.

"Is this or is it that"
Response: "Eh"
There's a lot of little nods to the old movies, but I'd strongly suggest not getting fixated on chronology or anything like that.
The old films barely had it, and it's the wrong question anyway.
RedWolf4:
Think of it like the Classic 'Dollars' western trilogy that starred Clint Eastwood as The Man With No Name. These are just stories with Max in them.
Method of Madness:
Interesting, I never thought of it like that!
Jimmy the Squid:
Yeah the chronology is extremely unimportant. Mad Max isn't a series with an overarching storyline, it's a bunch of different stories about a guy named Max who lives in the future and terrible things keep happening to/around him.
