Huh, two different surnames that were both romanized as Hsu? Do they sound just so slightly different that native English speakers can't hear the difference?

Also, does either of them sound slightly more like "Chu", "Chew", or "Jew"? I grew up in San Francisco and have had Chinese classmates with all three of those spellings, presumably from going through the West Coast equivalent of Ellis Island.
