Maybe some future plot development relies on the fact that Marten didn't hear this conversation.
Also (and the way it sruck me first) it's trying to wring a little more comedy from Marten's stuggle mentally to take on board what's going on.

She might have had a late growth spurt. She's only ~23 years old after all. (She turned 22 at her birthday in 1069, but we've had some timeskips after that.) I know I had one after I moved away from my parents to university, which means I was ~21 at the time.

questionable cereal content?
I never trust those little bits and bobs that sink and never resurface in my cereal...
As for the story; if it is possible to lock memories away, how would you know? Because they tell you they locked part of your memory? Could it be there is nothing locked away? Or just the memory of a chopping list? Could the whole 'I have something on you but you can't remember' be a lie? Could Corps Witch be telling fibs?
Case:
"First thing about AI minds: You don't smash 'em with a hammer. You use a lugwrench ..."

It depends how AIs record memories. However, I would imagine that they would be aware of a chunk of their lives where they cannot remember where they were or what they did.
