Alice Grove MCDLT - THE END...?

<< < (120/125) > >>

Thrudd:
Sadly I am also disappointed with the outcome.

Enter now the realm of disjointed ramblings if you dare.
(click to show/hide)Now I went into this knowing full well that JJ was totally green when it came to SF and I was prepared for some issues along the way.
Yet the story was surprisingly well paced, as pointed out, at the beginning.
A lot of questions were raised and surprising revelations made.
Our two protagonists went with us into this strange new land.
The reveal of the alien yet familiar life forms was true SF though the story kind of stuttered along on those points since they were not fully integrated into the world.

I am not so sure it is a lack of story telling chops so much as lacking experience in world building.
I get the impression that there was a story arc put together and characters sketched out with backgrounds and motivations etc but that the world as a whole wasn't fully thought through on the more mundane details and all the repercussions that would entail.
This is why shared worlds are such a boon to writers in both SF and Fantasy and why new worlds from whole cloth trips up a whole lot of writers just getting into the genre who think they can add what they need as they go along. This is what plot holes are made from.

All in all If everything up to the end of chapter 6 was left as is then we could have been left with an unfinished story. Would that have caused as much issue as this shutdown? That is open to speculation but count me in as one who would have felt less betrayed if things were left open to be continued at a latter date.

Just for the record:

I liked AG and always saw it as a side project by Jeph. A little something he took interest in for a while. And now that while is over.
I too think, that the end feels rushed and I am a bit disappointed. But this is more a thing of the speed of storytelling in the end than of the end itself. The last chapter raised a lot of questions I would love to have answered. This would have been enough stuff for several chapters to fill with. But Jeph wanted to get to the end quickly and we have to accept the artists decision in this case.

And apart from the rushed storytelling and the open questions, I have so say that the end is pretty satisfying in my oppinion. I have encountered worse in science-fiction. For example the end of "Against A Dark Background" by Ian M. Banks.
I am thankful, that Jeph took his time to bring AG to a decent end. If he had carried on, he could have reached a point where he complete loses interest and never finishes the story instead. But he didnīt and I have to express my gratitude for that.

Alice Grove is finished and I liked it. The story, the artwork and the characters (especially Sedna). The end feels rushed, but I can live with that.
Thanks Jeph, for sharing your little story with us.

Already curious for your next project:

Celly:
Yep, ending was crap.  Damn shame.

I am a mod and will lock this thread if present trends continue.

And then AG will be truly over and soon forgotten.

Can't be more concise than that.

There's a lot of room for sequel or at least stories in the same 'verse. For example, there's apparently a crater full of stripped and stolen nanotech on the Moon. That can't be good. But Jeph hasn't given any indication he's going to turn any of those dangling threads into stories.  A pity.
