Interesting. If I ever read that novel, it was so long ago that I can't remember it. Philip K. Dick, yes?

I think it's originally a 1970s Californian expression, which would fit with A Scanner Darkly -- pub. 1977 by Philip K. dick who lived in California. The only other place I have come across it is in a book called The Serial by Cyra McFadden (1977) satirizing the inhabitants of Marin county -- the characters use it a lot.

Ah, that explains why I used it so unconsciously. I've lived in California for most of my life, starting in 1966 when I was 4 and a half years old. I don't think I ever read The Serial, but I remember when it came out. Some of it may have been serialized in the San Francisco Chronicle, unless I'm thinking of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City -- I know that was serialized in the Chron, but I think The Serial may have been too.

Dora's parents are in the same city as her, right? Pretty easy to mosey down to the 'rents and mooch food off them. They seem to be a close-knit family so I doubt they'd mind the company (so long as it didn't happen ALL THE TIME). Known a few people who did that.
Faye's family is way down south though so that's not really an option for her regardless lol
Is it cold in here?:
I wonder if Martenmom would have any interest in taking Faye under her wing.
Tlaloc:
I'm totally wondering about what's going on with the hair on Dora
