Emily and Raven worked because for all the craziness and cloudcuckoolander tendencies that they presented, there were and are signs that there is far, far more to them than we thought.

Melon is...well... Melon.

The truth is that Melon is a punchline. At this stage, its her only purpose.

I think Melon should encounter a long-haired herding dog next.  That way instead of a Melon/pigeon story, it will be a Melon/collie one.
