WCDT Strips 3846-3850 (8-12 October, 2018)

markt1964:
Possibly a stupid question.... maybe I missed something in a previous strip that would have answered this.

AI's, in general, all have a white mouth interior, but it appears that Momo's does not.  I do not know if this was always the case and I have simply not noticed this before, or if there was an art style change at some point that I hadn't previously picked up on, or if there is some in-story reason why this is the case.

Carl-E:
It's rare that anything about AI's is explained - the hair thing is actually an exception.  That, and abs.

But yes, it seems that older/simpler/more "robotically" styled AIs (Pintsize, punchbot, the AI therapist) have mouths that may be something like an animated screen on the face, a mobile outline of a white "void".

Although Pintsize would eat cake batter, so there must be some kind of opening, probably only available when required by the rule of funny.

Later, more humanoid AIs (the store clerks when Momo went chassis shopping, even Momo's original chassis, heck even the practice boyfriend) have mechanical/structural mouths.

Then there's Seven (I think that was her name) who has  headlight for a face.  Or the robotic arm from the fight club.  No mouth at all!

Don't think too hard about it.  There's more variety in the world of AI than humans will ever have.  I was going to say, "Than humans can conceive", but you know, as AI "creators" we have conceived of all those varieties, and more we haven't even seen.

Which actually makes them a great model for a tolerant society...

I thought that the AIs have been getting excessively anthropomorphic lately, and this was a nice exception. Humans don't like being suspended upside down because our legs aren't especially great with tension, our circulatory system is degraded and our balance organs are disturbed. I think there may also be issues with respiration. I don't see that any of those need apply to Ai chassis. Humans generally don't have a problem with immersion in water, even cloudy water, so it also seems that shouldn't be a problem. OK it would be boring as hell to be suspended in one place for some hours, but 3846 established internal web browser, so she can just be reading web pages...

--- Quote from: Akima on 12 Oct 2018, 19:39 ---If, as Jeph suggests, Bubbles grew her own hair like that, I'm imagining her suspended from a pair of those "gravity boot" things. I wish I could grow my hair like that*; do robots get split ends?

*Obviously I'd need some sort of snorkel.

--- End quote ---

Bubbles is, no doubt, capable of maintaining a protracted hand-stand pose, probably for days if it was a tactical necessity.  A few hours in the vat would be no problem for her.  If Faye ever tells her, "Go soak your head," she might look in the mirror and reply, "That's a splendid idea!"

I, too, am very attached to my hair...

I just wish a little more of it was still attached to me!
