So, with the strip now in its fifth millennium (an arbitrary milestone, yes, but still a significant one) where would you like it to go and what would you like to see? There's a limit to my imagination but I think I've come up with some interesting ideas, some of which would take the strip in entirely new directions, others of which would continue with existing plot lines. What do you think?

My votes:

Marten - I need to get an adult life! - I really would like to see this followed up; I just wonder how Jeph would address it!
Elliott - An embarrassment of multiple romantic options! - I mean, there's Clinton, Brun, Roko and Renee and that's only the ones we know about! I guess I just like the occasional romantic comedy of errors!
Roko - Sometimes, you need more than words to help - I guess that I just still want to see that 'Roko Basilisk - Woman of Mystery' storyline!

Feel free to describe any ideas you have that aren't on my list. By all means do it in detail!

I like the idea of Martin going through some sort of development arc. With so much attention lately on Faye and her story, it would be nice to focus on Martin, who really is one of the other main characters.

Well... it's hard to say. I sorta assumed Fate is generally more a 'top' sexually.

And we PROBABLY shouldn't get into this too much, as I think the rules forbid that. *lol*

Eh, Bubbles and Faye have a healthy intimate relationship.

That said, what I'm taking from this is that Faye distracted Bubbles because she really doesn't want to talk about her moment of temptation. It happens. Something bad happens or you feel like you've had a moment of personal failure, someone close to you keeps trying to cheer you up or encourage you and you just want them to stop, because you want to move on from dwelling on that moment.

Tough to choose only three. I went for these:

Marten - I need to get an adult life!
Roko, Melon & Elliott - Living with a new me
Hannelore - I want someone to be able to hold me

It's all about the character development. I agree that Marten is somewhat overdue for some. In the recent Roko strips we've seen Melon become more than just the goofball she started off as, and I'd like to see that continue. And it feels like Hannelore's story is unfinished; I don't think we will see the rest, but I would like to.

So, basically, Faye used sex as a distraction from a conversation that she didn't want to have. The attempt seems to have been highly successful!

Still the point stands. The strip title - 'First Contact' - refers to first close contact with the enemy. Typically, these tend to be very tentative on both sides in most cases. Yes, Faye was right to pull away when she did if she genuinely felt her resolve weakening. Also, it's going to be a slow walk to getting to the point where she can spend more social time with her friends without confronting that issue. However, she has made progress and, hopefully, once she has had time and distance to think about it, she'll see the positives of what she achieved.

I'm not 100% on if it's Faye not wanting to have the conversation. She feels like crap, she feels defeated, and like she lost. So, what better way to feel better and take your mind off it than grabbing your significant Robo-Other and burning through some USB cables? Some people when feeling down just want something to take their mind off it and feel better, be it drugs, alcohol, sex, or a myriad of other things.

And if she comes out of the room in a bedsheet going back with pancakes while everyone is sitting in the living room? All the better

Could be that's what Faye's been subconsciously looking for all this time, someone she can't physically dominate, someone who can instead dominate her.

This is where Faye comes to understand that addiction means you never get to where you don't want a drink. Triumph is in not having one. You won, Gurl! (As I write this it occurs to me that maybe Jeph is setting her up for just that epiphany.)

I'm seeing the submissive thing as something she's always had a secret interest in, but this is the first time she's been with someone she trusts enough to go there with. That is, it's more affirmation of her bond with Bubbles.

Really neat to see their relationship so healthy.

I'm sort of wondering if Bubbles was an officer or in training to become an officer. Her rank has never been stated, but she sure seems to know a lot about practical psychology and leadership.

And yeah, I admit it: "Faye and Bubbles being adorable and affectionate" strips are my favorite kind of strips.

Agreed. I've always seen Bubbles as getting promoted as soon as she satisfied time-in-grade requirements. She was designed for leadership.

I don't think Bubbles would have been leading any squads, but considering she was part of a program looking at integrating more AI into the military, she was possibly being groomed for some leadership capacity, especially the fact that Bubbles would likely be the one getting immediate information rather than having it relayed to a human leader.

I think that today's strip is sort of self-explanatory. One thing I'd like to know is if this interlude was always planned or if Jeph added it after considering reader feedback. I wonder this because I think Marten is speaking for him in panel 2 when he says that Faye didn't come out of a sense of obligation; she genuinely wanted to be there for Dora on her happy night but hadn't actually thought of how it would affect her when she agreed. Because of this, as Marten says, it's unlikely that Faye would want to make a fuss about it.

It's not a pun as much as it is a literary reference. Not being a Dr Seuss reader I can't explain the context but it does seem to be a reference to one of his books, about a creature called a Lorax.

Not at all. I find the constant need to find a bad guy in every situation irritating. Dora and Tai were excited about their news and it didn’t occur to them that a bar wouldn’t be the best place for Faye.

Although if they were using puns this bad I’d probably bail early.
