As ironic as this is to say given what your signature is, I believe I've been misunderstood here.

QC is a fictional story with fully developed general AI in it. By narrative conceit, it could be given a new, very cool library for Claire to work in. If that doesn't happen, it's not really about reality, it's about what the story being told is.

Marten was introduced to the story as someone who'd moved across the country pursuing a relationship, and then immediately getting dumped and needing to start a new life in the place he'd ended up. That's the premise of this arc: Would Marten be willing to take that risk again, after having been burned on it once, for Claire. And if 'no', would Claire be willing to leave Marten for her dream job?

Those are the actually interesting questions to ask, which I think is what gets lost if you focus on the real-life logic of the premise.

Like, Claire's not going to get this job. This is going to be about what happens when there's a chance she could.
