Torg, you were right about their new album. It came the other day and I haven't stopped listening to it yet! Anyone know of any other good albums I could get hold of?

My Dying Bride.

Seriously, pick up everything you can buy them. They're awesome, and because Peacevilles putting out it's whole back-catalogue in digipack form, super-cheap.

Or, if you don't feel like more MDB, Paradise Lost-Lost Paradise.

I totally could not get into Turn Loose the Swans, it was WAY too slow.

My favorite doomdeath album is Katatonia's Brave Murder Day.

It is not Turn Loose the Swans that is too slow, it is you who are too fast, young grasshopper!

Nah, I can accept that as a criticism, though I think it's very wrong. :p

My thoughts on Katatonia are all good thoughts. They're probably the best mid-paced Doomdeath band. My only complaint is they're not quite DOOOMY enough a lot of the time, though Dan Swano was in the band at one point, which makes up for that.

Brave Murder Day not all that doomy? Gasp! On a side note, I highly enjoy Katatonia's whiny "suicide rock" phase as well as their doomdeath years. My friends and I love to sing along to "Criminals."

Anyway, I love Dan Swano; Moontower is delicious. And the Crimsons.

Yes, it's a pretty specific metal niche that's been around since the early '90s but is pretty much dead by now.

A few seminal doomdeath bands:
My Dying Bride
Anathema
Katatonia

Hmm yeah, I haven't sampled the range of Katatonias career enough. I think it's the vocals that detract from the doominess, I'm not sure though.

My Dying Bride ARE Gods.

I think they're one of the only metal bands that write songs that aren't really 9-minute Guitar Clinics in disguise. Turn Loose The Swans and Angel and the Dark River are my fave.

I really like certain tracks off of 34.540505% complete. The new one, "Songs of Darkness, Words of Light" is really unbelievable too!!

Whilst I'm a fan of a lot of that kind of music (Opeth!!!!), I know just what you mean. MDB perfected the art of slow, relatively simple songs that just sound awesome.

I'm yet to get a proper listen of  34.540505% complete, but agree on there being some damn decent stuff on 'Songs of Darkness, Words of Light'. Catherine Blake!!

Turn Loose the Swans is still their best though, imo, just for the quantity of awesome tracks. Sear Me MCMXC III, The Crown of Sympathy, The Snow in my Hand, etc.

I think The Angel and the Dark River is MDB's best work. First MDB album I got and it was like a slap of death to the face (almost like the time I first heard PL's Gothic).

Also, Katatonia's Brave Murder Day is a fantastic album but on a totally different level then Dance of December Souls.

It's their first 3 EPs of death metal into one CD. I got it too, it's pretty good.

Hmm...no one has heard the new record then? I quite like it. I think they utilized Aaron's clean vocals better on the new record than on anything the band has done previously, and while not as heavy as some of their records, the lovelorn/meloncholy/depressive nature of this album is quite good. There are some questionable lyrics here and there, but overall this is another winner for My Dying Bride.

They are really the only major doom-death band still putting out albums.  All the others are doing goth rock or broken up.

I'm looking foward to picking up the new album. I actually didn't like Songs of Darkness as much as Turn Loose the Swans and the Dreadful Hours,
but part of that is probably that Dreadful Hours was my introduction to the band.

Are you kidding?! They aren't even close to the only doom-death band still putting out records. However, there are two mistakes here, one is that My Dying Bride are far from being a doom-death band these days, and really haven't recorded a doom-death record in years, and the other mistake is that you believe they are the only doom-death band out there still putting out albums.

There are dozens and dozens of doom-death bands still releasing records, my favorite of which is the band Evoken.

You should check them out, their last record "Antithesis Of Light" was brilliant.

I haven't heard "A Line of Deathless Kings" yet.

Chalk me up as another person who considers "Turn Loose the Swans" their best record. I thought "Songs of Darkness, Words of Light" was pretty good as well.

Re: their other albums, Like Gods Of The Sun is probably the best one, although Sear Me MCMXCIII and Crown of Sympathy are better individual songs than most.

Whoops, I didn't mean to be so opaque.

I didn't mean their are no doom-death bands around anymore, but rather that My Dying Bride is one of the only original doom-death innovators still making doom metal.   I think I used the word major, I meant pioneers of doom-death.  Yeah, don't worry, I know that the doom-death genre is far from dead!

Also, while MDB has obviously progressed in a lot of ways, I'd still say their overrall genre fits best as doom-death.  Sure its not the same as  what they were doing in the early 90's, but what else are you going to call it?

34.788% is actually MDB's "expirimental" album. It's still great although a lot of MDB fans hate it.

I'd have to disagree. I'd say that it's easily the worst record in their entire discography. I think they recognized this as well which is why they didn't continue in that vein and why there was a longer than usual hiatus between that record and the next.

I think the second-to-last one wins the worst award, although it has a couple of crackin' tunes, it's generally just the same thing they usually do, done slightly less well.

Not that there's a bad MDB record but I just see 34.788...% as different. Opinions though. ;)

Seriously loving this new stuff <3

I'm off to play.com
