I belive there was a thread like this in the old forums. But it's gone now.
So what's the saddest music? Music that just pulls out those emotions better than any other?

For me at least, it's instrumental post-rock. Gy!be, Mono, Sigur Rós's ( ) ....
But well, i think it can be different for everyone.

Nine Inch Nails album/ep "Still".  i love that CD to death.  The instrumentals near the end is what gets to me the most, cuts me right to the core.

Sadness is my speciality...
Her Space Holiday
Meanwhile Back in Communist Russia
Bright Eyes
Azure Ray
My Vitriol
Elliott Smith
Radiohead
Delgados
The Smiths (some songs)
The Cure (more songs)
Manics - anything off the holy bible, possibly the most intensely depressing album in the world, with the exception of Fevers and  Mirrors...

I actually have a playlist of the most miserable songs in the world...

tom waits(when being balladeer-y)
martina sorbara(a few tracks, like 'eggs over easy' or 'this ship')
oh, and 'analgesin' by pig.

My Dying Bride or Sopor Aeternus and the Ensemble of Shadows (as long as you can take it seriously, a,lot of people just giggle at the vocals)

Particular songs by Apocalyptica, Candlemass, Sisters of Mercy, Paradise Lost and Anathema as well.

"Done Wrong" by Ani Difranco. Thats the sort of SLit Your Wrist music thats very dangerous to listen to after a breakup.

"The Edge of the Deep Green Sea" - The Cure. I wanna cry just thinking about it.

too cliched to say the smiths?  cos "i know it's over" and "that joke isn't funny anymore" just do it for me, every time.  they give that version of miserable that's good to indulge in instead of just making you wanna kill yourself.

I know...it was my most played sad song of the summer.
My happy song was float on, which kind of counteracted it...

And props to Sparklehorse - Happyman is one of the greatest songs.

As other people have already said and as I will uncreatively and unoriginally repeat, Elliot Smith and Sigur Ros (put some accents on there if you like.) I've always thought that some Les Savy Fav songs were sad too.

While the lyrics aren't all that sad, the last minute of The Fiery Furnaces' Chief Inspector Blancheflower has a very melancholy sound to it.

Good Charlotte makes me cry, though for altogether different reasons than most of the bands here.

Speaking of which, most of the bands here put out some good sad songs. Interpol is good sad music, and so is the Cure and Bright Eyes (though whether I get sadder or he gets sadder is up for debate). I think Wilco's "Wishful Thinking" is sad in a "I am crying whilst smiling" way, as is Thalia Zedek's "1926." And "Butterfly" by Weezer gets me every time.

And Nick Drake deserves a mention, of course.

White Winos by Loudon Wainwright. Um, my dad listens to him, so I do too, therefore. That song makes me sad. Actually, so do most of his newer songs. He sings about dying a lot.

Also, although these have been said before, some Radiohead, Ben Folds, Elliott Smith. Yeah.

I can see the first part. But because of a very long situation, Ben Folds' songs inspire me, and make me work harder towards my goal.

Sam Stone by John Prine
Lots of Smiths songs
Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah
A lot of Jonah Matranga's songs really get me. (Your Letter, The Big Parade)
Alkaline Trio is good for a few sad songs, too.

For personal reasons (although I found them pretty damn sad before, too):
Jimmy Eat World-Hear You Me
Elliott Smith-most everything, but especially Needle In The Hay

OK, so here's some songs which make me sad, and other people tend to think I'm mad for being upset by 'em... I felt like posting them rather than my more normal ones which have mostly been mentioned...

New Radicals-Someday
Goo Goo Dolls-Black Balloon
Counting Crows-Long December
Five For Fighting-Superman
Halo-Flatlined at 3am
Jimmy Eat World-23
Marilyn Manson-The Nobodies (Acoustic)
Joni Mitchell-Both Sides Now
The Eagles-Desperado
Oasis-Sad Song
Snow Patrol-Run
Lynyrd Skynyrd- Free Bird

(I suspect this list will grow)

I also got sent some promo matches with 'light up, light up' on the packet (geddit? Light...oh, never mind) which kept the song entrenched in my brain

i really think this depends on someone's personal attatchment or stories behind the songs.  For me, it's Bright Eyes.  Which is sad in the first place, but still... Also "Katie, Come True" by Son, Ambulance.  But there's a specific story behind that.

Awww...what a thread to resurrect -
I hereby add-
The Good Life - October Leaves/ Inmates

and
The Decemberists - From my one true love (lost at sea)

I recently dedicated a quarter of a page in our newspaper to the most intensely depressing songs in the world, so it's kind of fresh in my brain.
Also, Suede - Stay Together.

Funeral Doom like Until Death Overtakes Me works well on me. But then, the whole genre is writen to be soul crushingly sad really.

I like the whole lassing out in "pain and suffering" style sad of Death/Doom stuff like early Katatonia and October Tide.

Tom Waits - 'Who Are You', 'A Little Rain', 'Whistle Down The Wind'
Lucero - 'Mine Tonight', 'The Only One'
Dead Kennedys - 'Dead End'
Delgados - 'Peloton' in its entirety
Sparklehorse - 'Good Morning Spider' in all its melancholy wonder
Kudos on the people who mentioned those last two bands before, definitely on the money with the sadness.

I don't find Thursday sad at all, really. More kind of impassioned. I can't envisage torrents of guitar noise and people yelling their lungs out as sad, exactly, but I suppose it's a personal thing.
But then I can't really think of any songs I do find sad.

Edit: Actually, the saddest song I know is Unbroken by Link 80, which nicely contradicts what I said about noise and yelling. Oh well.

=laughs= Hooray for contradictions?

I dunno, I guess it /is/ a personal thing, but the clear passion in Geoff Rickly's voice coupled with the screaming guitars and heavy beat of the drum((Hmmm...can we guess who's a writer?)) speaks to me on a very personal level, and always manages to choke me up.

=laughs some more= I've given up listening to Thursday at school, 'cause I often find myself on the edge of tears while Chris looks on, rolling his eyes at me.

Not that he's any better--he's a closet Cranberries fan and won't admit it.

I find suicidal black metal to be really sad..  I guess agonizing and filled with hateful despair is a better way to put it

Xasthur - Nocturnal Poisoning (more of a supernatural alienation and hateful obsession with the occult..  has reoccuring themes of astral projection, suicide, and despair)

Abyssic Hate - Suicidal Emotions

Beatrik - Journey Through The End Of Life

Krohm - A World Through Dead Eyes

Silencer - Death Pierce Me (This band has a FUCKED UP frontman.  In the booklet accompanying this CD, it shows him sitting against the wall covered in some kind of blood with a weird silvery mask on and pigs hooves taped onto his hands.  Unfortunately, this band is no more since he was institutionalized.)

Bethlehem - Dictus Te Necare

Burzum - Hvist Lyset Tar Oss (perhaps not quite sad..  there's definitely an element of sadness in there mixed with an "otherworldly" feeling.)

Nargaroth - Geliebte Des Regens

Also I like me some doom / funeral doom!

Anything by:

Nortt
Shape of Despair
Mournful Congregation
Pantheïst
Forest of Shadows
Ningizzia
Morgion
Deinonychus
Abysmal Grief

Other stuff like drone is horrible to listen to and makes one want to kill onesself

Sun O)))
The Funeral Orchestra

etc etc
