Slow metal bores me. But this wasn't terrible. Overly standard chord structure without much variation. Acoustic under electric sound is good. Lyrics are subdued, and not that good anyways. Around 2:30 there's a little arpegiated acoustic soloey thing. That was pleasent.
All this said: 5/10, not my thing, but not horrible.

didn't seem too experimental to me. but then, i'm not really into rocky stuff much. liked the drums (especially towards the end), but that always seems to be my favourite thing about most things. and instrumentals are always nice. (edit: everyone else seems to be doing out of 10 things, so i give this 6. yeah.)

Venetian Snares - Nineteen

Something like 80's video game noises to start, before shifting into computer sound sampled hip hop/dj breaks style beats. Does lots of "funky" stuff over a simple slow tone background. Hey, this actually sounds interesting rather than general sampled beat stuff. Yeah, it could have been done with just Fruity Loops, but I actually own albums that where made only with Fruity Loops, so it doesn't matter. I dunno if it's standard for this...act...but it's not all one tone "thunk thunk thunk, sample 1, sample 2, sample 1, sample 2" stuff.

I think it struck a little bit of a chord with my liking for Experimental Electronica. It is, in it self, musically limited as to how good I can see it being.....but it's better than standing Hip Hop, DJ breaks stuff, whatever. Yeah, dunno why I called it Hip Hop stuff to start with, just started off sounding like that. I presume there's a proper term form the DJ mixing/sample/scratching thing.

Gets a 5 for being interesting, doing in a way that doesn't suck ass and actually being a song. It's something I could sit around and listen to if my friends did, but not something that I would actively listen to or hold an interest in.

i'm not sure if i just miss the point with metal. are they trying to be silly? because if they are, i don't mind this. but if these guys are serious... honky tonk? maracas? (metal-liking housemate walks in to borrow a dvd. "hmm. sounds like video-game metal."). i mean, i like silly things. a lot. and if this is silly, then it's not too bad. especially considering i don't like metal that much.

Yes, yes you did miss the point by miles. Though it is from a concept album, so not completely fair to say that. Half of which is set in 1928, hence the 1920's style effects and paino solo. Though there's no maracas anywhere in that song.. it's either keyboard work it just something on the (huge) drumkit. It's prog and it's very serious, it's a great technical piece. What did you think of the bass solo and etc?

And besides, Metal is a massive gener...there's not just the one point to it. Though nothing in that sounds like it comes from a video game, unless you mean the actually fact it just has keyboards.

....I'm not sure...exactly what that is. It's definately not like anything i've ever heard before, and certianly not like what i usually listen to, but its good. some really wierd noises in there.

back on topic...its good..did i say that before? if you like funny sounding music that has...interesting lyrics and some strange style changes, it seems to me, you'll like this. chaotic is a good word too.

the first thing I thought when I heard the opening, was very american in the vein of mainstream guitarrock ala Jimmy Eat World(and thats not neccesarily a bad thing). But fortunately it gets almost claustrophobic when the singer kicks in with a pained(filtered?) voice. The guitars contributes to this, but then in the chorus, they just sound really dull. The singer/singers go a bit screamy in the end, which I just don't like. The lyrics are okay I suppose, its a little difficult to hear, but difinitely a tad melodramatic.
Overall there are some parts of the song I like, but both chorus and the end are less than great in my book.
It gets a 7/10 from me..

The robotic sounding thing really seemed like it was going to be an intro, but then it just kept going and going and going... This little ditty was like a gigantic mixer-weilding army of angry Germanic robots (don't know what country, but sounded very German). The little drop-out around 3:30 except for the angry man voice was nifty. Too bad I couldn't understand a word of this... I can respect the fun of making a song entirely of vocals and the use of crazy effects, as I do it all the friggity time.

yeah it's german and I have no idea what they are saying either, except that Halber Mensch means half-human and their name means falling/crashing new buildings. But ya they are awesome, the lead singer, Blixa Bargeld, played guitar in Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds for quite a while. They also use all these weird self-made instruments, drills, broken glass and various pipes etc. Very experimental bunch of germans, going on their 25 year as a band, legends well in my head anyway..

Emerson, Lake, and Palmer's Trilogy

It starts with some pretty cool quiet piano stuff, do de do, as soon as it gets a bit overdone you're hit with a giant wall of WHAT THE FUCK. There's all of these snth things going on, which really provides good contrast, but I think it gets old rather quickly. Some singing, more stuff. Then you have a different synth sound come out entirely. Then it keeps going. IT KEEPS GOING AND GOING it's like the Energizer Bunny on LSD. It keeps pretty bouncy to the end where it concludes in that classic way that we've all heard but not too recently.

I give it a 6.5/10 it's somthing, but a bit too weird for my taste.

Yoko Kanno = teh sex. The instruments sound crisp, clean and professional. The most tasteful-sounding trumpet I've heard in a while. The drumming keeps a nice marching beat and has some occasional rolls to keep things interesting. The saxaphone bobs and weaves and flutters through the mix and flies through all sorts of octives. This is why the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack > all anime OSTs. XP

Modest Mouse - Doin' the Cockroach

Slow build acoustic start then some horrible vocals, over soft tones that spike a tad with shouts. Picks up with the chours, but it's just the same only faster, little strum along guitar and drums that swich between two basic patterns. Breaks down a bit after that, vocals improve a little, but picks back up into the same bland tones and bad shouting. Picks along into a riff then shifts to start stop patterns and the drums/bass follow suit. Few twangy tones at the end to makes something differnet.

Perfect paint by numbers blandness. Musically fine but it's then it's nothing that'll push most peoples limits at all. 2/10 for having basic music ideas and not messing them up.

*Shrugs* what you get for a blind download.

It starts off with some strange synth and a couple painfully distorted chords. The singing then begins and I'm not really feeling it. They're kind yelling/talking instead of singing. This is called into question when they use what appears to be vocal harmony. Can spoken harmony hapen? It just did. You have a prett cool guitar feature, then a drum feature, then another guitar feature. That's some damn good guitar playing. Then the vocals come back in just when it had my intrest again.

Overall it felt kind of like I've been there before, though I haven't. How bizzare. I give this a medicore 5/10

Banana Pancakes: Starts off with a few simple acoustic riffs, and then mellow voice kicking in. I'm listening to this and trying to get a full feel for the originality of the music, but I just keep going back to G-Love and the Special Sauce as the track goes on. There's a sort of layered laziness, both in the track and in the lyrics. A definite Sunday Morning track. Song comes to a complete halt at the end, which I wasn't expecting. Was expecting more of a fade out. Different.

Not really my thing, and not terribly original, but not bad overall. 5/10

Witness - The One A.M. Radio

Nice and relaxed, like a soulful electronica song should be. It starts with just the lead singer's soft voice and a drum pattern, but then stuff is added on as the song continues. Analog synth meledies and evangelical female background vocals settle into the mix to make a nice mesh of sound. I liked how the drum had a little rythm variety near the end in case you drifted away from the song as it droned throughout. Really nice song.

Built to Spill - You Were Right

I have heard Built to Spill a couple of times, and heard about the premise for this song, namely that it consists of quotes from all sorts of people fx. Led Zeppelin. Well the intro proves that Doug Martsch(presumably) can play guitar, and he continues that all the way through. It's basically guitarrock at it's finest, and I don't really have anything bad to say about this song.

a 9/10 from me..

Mmm... hilarious song title. Weird funny sounds in the beginning, then gets into a decent groove, which I can appreciate. Ditto for the hand clapping. The vocals are a bit low, if you ask me, and sound a bit annoying. And besides that, the song seems a bit samey, even if it is less than two minutes. Could used just a little variation.
5/10; which doesn't mean the song is bad (that's what the scores below 5 are), but it's just not my bag, baby.

Slightly annoying, but on the whole quite decent. It was kinda a combination of semi-forced punk and The Flaming Sideburns. Good crashy, well-distorted guitars. Bass was boring. The drummer was trying too damned hard to drum a failry simple beat. Against Me! still remain neutral in my book. Nothing extraordinary, nothing to bitch about.

Against Me! - Rice and Bread

Wow. I wasn't expecting much for 1:42 song, but I got something really full. It felt longer than it was, in a good way, mainly because it takes about as many turns as a Built to Spill song, except with faster transition. I love the singer; he has a sing/speak style comparable to Travis Morrison that flows with each part of the song. The breakdown into pretty indie rock guitar was really nice, and felt pretty epic, like this kind of breakdown should sound like. I could listen to this thing over and over.

LTE - "Universal Mind"
Okay, this is my definition of Prog and it doesn't suprise me it comes from you.

I like the long epic songs and I do like this one. The talent of the lead guitarist is amazing. There are parts where the piano doesn't quite seem like it fits with the arrangement. I really like the segment from 4:30 and on and all the parts of the ensamble seem to fit very well. The guitar solo sometimes felt like a cheesy 80s "look at me wail away and scrunch my fingers on the little strings in front of the video camera for all you people at home to see how amazing I am". Also, the piano sometimes felt a little John Tesh-y. That may have been too harsh. I wouldn't call this the best ending... but eh.. it was funny to say the least.

Overall my official score is:
7.5/10

I'd listen to it again and maybe look for some more LTE, but probably won't work its way into my regular listening schedule. Who knows.

The intro was pretty 20's-German-Expressionist-Gasmic, which is nice. The talked vocals are cool and the background playing is quite nice, but it was pretty long and unvaried. Pretty boring, tbh. Worked ok for storytelling I suppose...meh.

Ewwwwwww. It sounded promising in the beginning, but the annoying growling mixed with the cheesey synth and disco beat drumming kind of ruin the mood. It's as if they're trying too hard to be scary. It ends up sounding hokey to me. I'll give props for the cool guitar and drum mix, and the ability to a post-punk amount of time changes.

Actually, I was pleasantly suprised by this one. It reminds me of Coldplay for some reason (I know, I'm sorry). The melody is a bit thin, but the rhythm is tight, especially towards the end. Fairly hummable, but also a bit bland. 7 out of 10.

Sneaker Pimps - 6 underground(Nellee Hooper edit)

I remember Sneaker Pimps being mentioned with Portishead and Massive Attack as trip-hop, and it sounds very trip-hoppy. I like the vocalist, while she is not amazing, she fits the track very much. The music sounds a bit like Massive Attack, no wonder, but not really as interesting as their beats. They used a sample I have heard before(the "one-two"), which I found curious. Overall I like the song, I think its good but not fantastic.

I'll swear the intro was nicked straight from Tenacious D apart from the violin :p. Not bad though. Pretty good vocals, but I don't like how they were mixed in. The violin is very nice, but violin tends to be. A tad repetitive and monotonous, but in quite a nice way, with a nice little development towards the end.

All in all, really actually quite good. 7.9/10. Could have done with some more robust/natural vocals.

Now prepare to rock.

deja vú...I think I have heard it before, probably slacked it off, but for some reason I am in the mood for obscure instrumental metal today. I especially like the samples(the beginning for instance), they fit like a glove, but the riff gets a bit tedious half-way through.

Unfortunately, it was a really bad recording. This song was AWESOME. I've heard the original a couple of times before, but I think I liked this better. Clever semi-jazzy guitar work. The bass and drums were sorta quiet (I have terrible speakers) but they held a good rhythm. Singer was very into it and that helped the song a lot.

Okay. David Weiss covering "Scarborough Fair." So: I obviously know the original song...and even though I was born in 1984 and only first saw The Graduate last year, the song is inextricably linked with the film for me. The guitar work was certainly spot-on, but nothing improving on the original. The saw playing was ridiculous. The thing about a song like this is, it's technically well done, but I would always choose the original over this, because the eerie whine of the saw loses its novelty. It's similar to hearing a really excellent funny song. Overwhelmingly, no matter how good the song is, it gets tiresome when the joke gets old. And here I imagine it's the same--as soon as I get over the fact that the saw-playing is blowing my mind, it's going to be a spot-on cover of "Scarborough Fair" with a weird ghostly sound instead of Simon and Garfunkel singing. Which will always be less preferablt to the original.

But it is really cool. 6/10
