Incidentally, I just finally figured out what was driving me mad about the verse riff to that Mock Orange song—it's very reminiscent of the one from Squeeze's "Up the Junction". Oh well. It's still a good song.

I wasnt too impressed on the first listening. My first reaction was. "what is this? emo lyrics in an upbeat song?" the vocals just somehow werent what i expected. As the song progressed, i got into the mood of it a bit more, and realised its actaully quite a beautiful song. Its a bit reminicent of lounge singers, its got a nice classic feel to it really. Some of the lyrics still feel very out of place, though i suspect the incongruity might be intentional? things like "i painted a dirty word on your old mans mercedes benz because you told me to do it" doesnt really fit.

Im a fan of horn sections and happy music, but im not a fan of vapid love songs. I'm not sure what the writer intended to do with the lyrics, but since im saving the file to my hard drive, i think it deserves 6/10.

Anyway, heres mine. Ive hosted the file to make it easy. Its a local band called fineapple. I went to school with the drummer. The songs called "handyman". Their live shows are mad. The last one i went to, some kid got naked and started breakdancing.

*resurrects the thread*

Fineapple - Handyman

Quite cool lyrics, and decent singing and playing and so forth, but I've got to say the music itself just did absolutely nothing for me whatsoever.I really can't think of anything else to say about it. Wouldn't ever listen to it again. Wouldn't go see 'em. But they obviously have some reasonable talent. 3.9/10

Now, one of my fave songs ever. One of the ones I just played twenty times through upon first hearing:

Inkubus Sukkubus - Vampire Punk Rockers From Hell

It's probably marginally the best of what Inkysuk fans call the 'Vampyre' songs, and one of their best songs overall. It's also Inkysuk's homage to 25 years of punk rock, and includes an awesome darkened version of the Wytches Chant (Nemesis! Hecate! Lilith! Kali!) under the end.

Inkubus Sukkubus - Vampire Punk Rockers From Hell

With a song called Vampire Punk Rockers From Hell, I was sort of expecting one of those shitty songs written by nerdy kids in their parent's basement between DnD sessions and soda runs. It's absolutely nothing of the sort. at all. It's a catchy little tune, with a pretty awesome singer. Nothing exceptionally talented musically, but it all works together. Must check out more Inkubus Sukkubus.

Score: 9.5/10.

Now, onto the pure, condensed musical awesome that is Mr. Bungle's Goodbye Sober Day:

Inkysuk have been together a good 15 years now. They write effortlessly perfect and uplifting pagan/goth rock about vampires, witches, elves, fairies, goblins, gypsies, ancient gods, prolific sex with most of the above, doomed love, anti-christianity, wiccanism, magick and suicide. Easily the best goth band still operating in the world today, which of course means that any over-eyeshadowed individual picked at random from the street has a 90% chance of never having heard of them.

I'd review Mr. Bungle, but I'm not such a big fan, and I'm sure you want to open some ears.

Mr. Bungle's Ars Moriendi:

It's an interesting fusion of instruments that makes it very interesting to listen to. They mix sounds so completely that it is slightly disorienting. They are very talented intrumentalists. At 1:52 in they start yelling, which kind of ruins it for me. It returns to (normal?) after a little bit an it's like the beginning. It's a very interesting mixture of sounds that fuses future and past very closely together. I'm not sure how I feel about this. It's interesting to hear once, but I'm not sure how I could take it after that one time I give it a definitive WTF out of 10.

The next is Rude and Reckless by The Slackers.

EDIT: After all practical use of this link is gone, I will now fix it!

Anyways, I really like the Inkubus Sukkubas song and I vote Khar for Prime-Minister of Da Flow for thread revival.

I'm honoured.

The Slackers - Rude and Reckless

I felt that the little bit at the start of the intro could probably have been dispensed with. The opening singing is ok, what genre is this anyway? Jazz, reggae? It's quite relaxed and inoffensive. Really not my thing, and I doubt it will drop into my playlists, but it's really not that bad. I imagine it's pretty good within it's genre. A bit monotonous would be my only other real criticism, but...hmmm, let's see. 6.9. Highest I can give it for not really liking the style.

Now, warning. The following track may contain large quantities of Dan Swano being effortlessly awesome.

Edge of Sanity - Blood Coloured

One vocalist, and I think he's playing lead guitar on this track too. It sounds his style more than Dread Axellsons.

Edge of Sanity - Blood Colored

Starts off with some heavy drum beat and then in comes the GEETAR with a bitchin guitar riff thing. Then comes in the vocals. Some guy singing until a little bit where he kinda partially growls but not really. Can't say anythign about the lyrics, since I an't really understand all of them, but that's beside the point, as I'm assuming the main focus is the awesome guitar work. Not a bad song, actually.

Score: 7/10

now, for my pick; Praxis - Armed (TSA Agent #5)

http://s43.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=029K33Q07P7OI035NHHR40EMUM

Prepare for extreme amounts of Buckethead being weird while playing CIrcus tunes and shit. and Bill Laswell doing whatever it is he does. Course, I would have uploaded Praxis' amazing little prog half-metal Inferno/Heatseeker/Exploded Heart, but it's nine minutes long.

They're quite good lyrics actually.

Quote
I hear the sound of darkness
moving closer to my ears.
All alone and wounded I lie here
resembling all the years.
This war is over for mankind.
The X-machines will end us all.
Technology is fatal.
We will see the future, and then we fall...

Thunder and Lightning.
The rain is whipping my naked skin.
Screaming. Dying in sin...
Blood coloured!
The X-Machines just wiped away all life,
The blood-coloured sky
Is the only thing that will live
when I die.

All dead, all gone, all hope is lost.
They came from nowhere to end our race.
I see the center of the world,
it's now a desert that no wind will embrace.
Dark formations, shadows laugh.
I lie here waiting for the end.
I know they will send the last ones down
to make sure that we all descend.

Nightmares come true.
Why can't I put myself away?
Dying inside.
Am I already dead?
Blood coloured!
The X-Machines just wiped away all life,
The blood-coloured sky
Is the only thing that will live
when I die.

Women and children
screaming in pain.
Darkness our witness,
we die in the blood-filled rain

I hear the sound of darkness,
 moving closer to my ears.
All alone and wounded I lie here
resembling all the years.
This war is over for mankind.
The X-machines will end us all.
Technology is fatal.
We will see the future
and then we fall.

Thunder and Lightning.
The rain is whipping my naked skin.
Screaming. Dying in sin.
Blood coloured!
The X-Machines just wiped away all life,
The blood-coloured sky
Is the only thing that will live
when I die.

I forget most people can't comprehend growls.

Praxis - Armed (TSA Agent #5)

kooky sounding little thing that didn't seem to really go anywhere. not to say i didn't like it -- weird little christmas carol thing in the middle mixed with what sounds like air raid sirens, heh. i imagine it'd make more sense in an album context? i'll give it seven points.

I could swear to god my friend Oliver's played this for me before. Praxis rocking goodness. Lots of funny noises and Buckethead rocking like a motherfucker. Killer stuff.
9/10.

Now, for some super-doooper experimental jazz with the kickasssist guitaring in long time. I give you John McLaughlin's "Extrapolation".

I'd definatly take ye up on a "jam session lolz" if I ever happen to be in the area. a family friend of mine lives somewhere near LA, so not only do I have an excuse to go out, I have places to stay! woo!

anyways: John Mc. Laughlin - Extrapolation

Starts off with the farely common little bass/drum beat thing, at least for Jazz, and soon enough the guitar and what sounds like a saxophone come in and play some kinda... Speghetti Western Riffs written by Stevie Ray Vaughn while he was tired. or something. then some guitar noodling, which is always awesome. Then some Saxophone noodling. Then both. Either way, Experimental Jazz is OKAY in my book.

Score: 8/10

Now, for my song, I give you: The Mothers of Invention - Who are the Brain Police?

My review for Zappa:

Whoever the Brain Police are, they certainly want to know where Mr. Zappa and his friends got their drugs. This song is pretty damn psychedelic, in a really bad trip way. Great vocals, and use of heavy, fuzzy distortion, the central section with the whispering voices over and over is cool. The silly vocals and the playground-rhyme kind of sections remind me a lot of really early Pink Floyd of the 'See Emily Play' era. Fine shit. Real fine. 9/10, methinks.

Blood Brothers:

A hit and miss band for me. I liked Burn Piano Island, Burn, but this one seems almost...too conventional? I dunno. Parts overdose too much on the high vocals without introducing any partiuclarly rocking riffs and harmonies as well...hmmmn. I have to award it a mere 6/10. Needs more bulimic rainbows.

Now, you know what this thread hasn't had for far too long? Good, un-reconstructed, face-removing heavy FUCKING metal. Enter, the drunken bastards of Thrash. They come from Germany, and they drink beer. They are called Tankard, and they're doing yo momma right now

Tankard - 666 Packs

Now, the lyrics really are important for this one. You should be able to hear them, but just in case:

We have a deal with Satan
A contract signed in Hell
We sacrifice a virgin
He makes our record sell

SATAN! - To Antichrist we pray
EVIL! - To hit the charts one day

666 Packs - Seven days of death and pain
Satan - Thirteen hours blood will rain
666 Packs - Nine black bats will eat your brain
Satan - Good with numbers? Join our cult!

We have the baddest evil
Come buy our merchandise
A plastic skull, a T-Shirt
That says "I shit on Christ!"

SATAN! - is thrashing to the beat
EVIL! - on seven days of week

On stage we slaughter poultry
In songs we slaughter man
Black masses, guts and torture
We do the worst we can

SATAN! EVIL! - on blood and gore we feast
SATAN! - I am your Judas Priest

I know, Zappa was just wierd. I was speaking...not sarcastically or ironically...but in some way...blah.

Tankard - 666 Pack

Finally! Some metal I know is a joke, sorry. Unfortunately it was a bad recording, but what I could hear sounded like stereotypical metal, though there is a nice solo thing and they do vary it in the last half. I like the singer for his accent, especially when he tries to say "cult", he pronounces it "kalt" instead which means cold. However it is difficult to hear what he says at times, so at first I thought Khar's lyrics were wrong. Overall a nice parody, mainly because they can play their instruments pretty well.

I give it 5/10 for novelty..

Now onto my favourite band Under Byen remixing/covering Rammstein!
For some weird reason it says Flaming Lips in WMP, but it is not as you can clearly hear
Rammstein - Ohne Dich(Under Byen Remix)

Yeah, that Flaming Lips thing kinda tripped me out .

Rammstein - Ohne Dich (Under Byen Remix)

I was impressed by this. I thought it was going to be a high-speed dance remix of a generic metal song, but it was gorgiousness and gorgeousity made flesh. Great cascading piano riff. The lyrics were kinda dubbed out and not really understandable but it fit with what they were doing.
Alltogether, a solid 8/10.

Now, experience the awesome of Michael Romeo rocking like a mother fucker for 5 minutes. Symphony X's "On The Breath of Poseidon".

It is sort of his thing, you see, he does it all the time on Det er Mig Der Holder Trĉerne Sammen, variating it of course, but still and gosh I am glad someone finally saw the genius that is Under Byen.

No no, it wasn't musical genius, but it was well put together and awesomely executed. It just should have been a wee bit more exciting and it may have gotten close to a 10. But whateva.

It makes me kinda sad that I've seen this exact thread taken up with ten times the enthusiasm on fucking gaming forums.

Symphony X - On the Breath of Poseidon

Classy prog guitar intro leads into one of those rocking woodle-oodle-oo bits* as keys and drums join in, then continues on in the same sort of fashion, slowing down at about two minutes to a more atmospheric and powerful section as the vocals join in. Then cut down for a crowd roar to just guitar again for some pretty cool solo action. The only real problem with this song is it doesn't exactly go anywhere, but it's still pretty good for all of that. 8.5/10

Now, now, if this were on some shitty compilation CD, the CD would have to be called 'progsters go metal then go goth, because they can, cos they've got great voices and they can play the keyboard and program a drum machine, yo'. This is what happens when Dan Swano listens to too much Sisters of Mercy:

Edge of Sanity - Sacrificed

The best bit is the mental images in my mind. Especially the one of Dread motherfucking Axellson plucking gently at his base and swaying a bit whilst chanting 'Down down deeper down down deeper down'.

(Yes, I know I just set EoS, but I bloody well forgot, ok?)

Sorry, Khar, been on my 56k recently. I'll bring some stuffs once I get back to my gaming rig.

Ed: Eh, screw it. I went ahead and dled it anyway. I'm about two minutes in. At first I didn't like it, but now I'm kinda liking it.

Edge Of Sanity - Sacrificed

Fun generic rock and roll. Heavy, but not overly so. This band seems to know their limitations and they're smart enough not to push themselves past it. Catchy guitar riff, boring rhythm section. The lyrics were pretty good, but the singer delivered them in a thoroughly lame manner. Too much goddam echo!
Whatevs, for pure rockin' rollin' fun: 6/10.

Now, the unmatched (except perhaps by the Bad Plus) power jazz might of Brian Haas, Reed Mathis, and Jason Smart.

Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Thelonious Monk Is My Grandmother

PS. The bass in the song is that high pitched echoey thing in the begining. The bass line is basically the lead line.

Hmmm...
Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey - Thelonious Monk Is My Grandmother
Awesome name to start with. Im not typically a fan of the whole electronic sounding music but i actually liked this song. It has a nice flow to it, and for some reason, the tune just got caught in my head, and wouldnt leave until i heard it again. A good kind of relaxing song which reminded me of primus, except with a bit more of a jazzy progression. I liked how they even changed the background style in from time to time, from lighter, to heavier, and back again. Good song

7.5/10

Ok, so now my recommendation
Bulldog Mansion - Happy Birthday to Me

It sounds like Primus because 1/3rd of their songs are co-written by Les Claypool, and he is listed as one of their top three major influences.

Bulldog Mansion - Happy Birthday to Me

I don't really like this. It's nicely up-beat and has a funky, punchy bass but the tone isn't really smooth enough. The guitar could do something a bit more intresting. The vocals arn't particularly clear because they are in some crazy moon language :p and while they have got some nice changes in tone, i think they should be a bit more dramatic and need some stronger chorus. The changes in dynamics are cliched and i could swear i have heard three or four almost identical songs with diffrent lyrics before. It's kinda poppy and fun. It's got an organ! Is it Korean?

4.5/10

My Recomendation is...
Red Hot Roxy - Rocket

I don't think it's possible to actually buy anything from this band tho. makes me sad :(

hmm. not really my cup of tea at all, sorry. sounds kind of generic. same old tonal range, same old chords, same old verse/chorus/verse/chorus, fairly nondescript lyrics... (i realise though, that once you get into a genre of music you appreciate the subtleties and differences within and between artists, subgenres, etc)

i hate doing this, since you seem to quite like this band. i give this song 1 out of 5. well maybe 1.5, since it isn't really bad or anything. i just don't like it.

anyhow, moving on...

atari teenage riot: digital hardcore

various friends have been insisting i check these guys out for ages. i finally did, and holy shit. utter fucking chaos. awesome. odds are it isn't your cup of tea either, but hey.

(edit'd for url fixing)

Atari Teenage Riot - Digital Hardcore

This song fit its name almost too well. Very loud, very hard, but also quite well organized and put together. Some good noise in there, some only decent. The first minute had some very rockin' moments. The second half of the song was a nice slice of organized chaos. The singing left a lot to be desired. Meh.
For good organization and rockin' moments 7/10.

Now for some different style of Bungle. All the Mr. Bungle that's been put up on this thread has been off the most easy-to-swallow album, "California". This is off of "Disco Volante". In layman's terms that means brainfuck-time.

Mr. Bungle - Merry Go Bye-Bye
(Just listen to the first song, it's two songs on one track...)
