Mr. Bungle - Merry Go Bye-Bye

Starts off with a sort of old fashioned rock bit, with some cheesy backing vocals and keys, that was reasonably cool. Cuts hard into a thrash squeal, then some noise, then another rip of thrash, which was pretty cool. Then some more noise stuff over a metal build-up, which went into a strange guitar part, and more odd noise stuff. Like every other Mr. Bungle track I've heard,it was cool, I guess, but not gripping me. the death metal bit it then came on with the video games noises was pretty cool. But it was 4 minutes in now, and kinda lacking in awesome tbh. Then faded out to another soft rock bit that sounded like late Floyd to a certain extent, and then turned into Meatloaf in a pretty well done transmission. Vocals started repeating from the opening section. And that was the first track I think, so I'll stop there.

It's okay. original certainly...I dunno...it just felt like a chore to listen to really, which I suppose in a way it was always going to be...but I felt no hook, ya know? ...6.8/10 I'd say.

I suspect the reason I can't really like Mr. Bungle is because I heard them after I became a rabid fan of Crotchduster, and Slippery Jim, Fornicus and Cain push a brand of rabid, hyper-offensive insanity that, in my mind, rapes Mr. Bungle in the ears. I think they're superior because, even though I hate some of the musical styles they use, I can't stop fucking laughing. I think I may have already posted Let Me Into Starfish Land so:

Heh. Hatemail answering is always funny. No, but the best is seriously the best is Strong Bad's spring cleaning, where it doesn't even have to be hateful for him to dis it.

Anyways, on topic, this song was teh rawkzorz. And it was very very funny. I especially liked the part where THE ENTIRE SONG! So... yes. 9/10 (just because I can't stand growled lyrics...)

Fine, I'll touch it.

A pretty cool percussion thing at the beginning, which I can appreciate. This guy seems to have somthing against women, but I'll dismiss that. He's much more talking than singing, and it is very repetitive. It's much more of a story-type song than a musicaly focused song.

I give this a this music is for crazy people out of ten.

Up next is the best damn a capella band ever, period. There name is The Buffalo Chips (because they're from Buffalo) and the song is called You can Call Me Al

i should declare my bias first. i don't like paul simon. at all. if this means i hate music (or life), then meh, i guess i hate music (or life).

that said... there's some seriously impressive vocal percussion going on here. the drums especially, if that is actually someone's mouth. 11 out of 10 for crispness. bass is good, too.

so i'll give this bk-bk-tss out of 10.

anyway. i wasn't going to post in this thread, but then this song came up on shuffle on my ipod and i remembered how much i liked it. so i thought someone else should hear it.

amon tobin -- the clean-up

this is from the soundtrack amon tobin did for the latest splinter cell game. usually i'd be all like "game music nurr wtf this sucks" but the developers pretty much gave him complete creative license to do whatever he wanted. the soundtrack's pretty moody and atmospheric (this is one of the faster/louder tracks), and there's some great drumwork in the second half.

Amon Tobin - The Clean Up
Starts off nice and atmospheric. I was pretty much expecting it to continue like this when a sort of a beat kind of emerges and then opens up completely. Cut up drums = win. Some nice samples in there, like the slightly arabian sounding flute thing. This track build up some real tension at the start and then keeps it nearly all the way through. It's pretty good. I give it a Sam Fisher out of ten.

The plodding bass and simple guitar riffs ended up being a bit boring at first, but eventually, I found them creeping into my skull and I was tapping my feet half-way through the song. His voice wasn't anything special, but I still enjoyed it. All in all, it was well put together, and a bit catchy. 6/10.

Please Inform the captain this is a Hijack - Your good thing is about to come to an end

Amusing sample-based intro degenerates into underwhelming screamo and doesn't go anywhere from there. The impotent vocals and non-existent production values conspire to produce a shockingly poor overall sound, like at the drive-in performing from the inside of a biscuit tin. The guitarist is clearly making an effort to do something a little bit different from the standard screamo style but not necessarily succeeding. I give it 3/10 for the intro alone.

PS.
I don't like screamo, pretty much the entire genre doesn't sit well with me, anyone who reads this and shares my opinion fair enough you'll probably agree with me on the song. Anyone who reads this and does like the genre please don't flame me, i'm not an expert and i don't claim to be.

My suggestion, Sage Francis - Escape Artist. In my opinion one of the highlights from his latest album 'A Healthy Distrust'.

Sage Francis - Escape Artist

Rather different from what I expected from the name. The name sounds like country-music. I'm not a great follower of hip-hop or rap music, even though I enjoy any kind of music. I do have a friend who is a beginning hip-hop artist, releasing minor self-produced instrumental hip-hop albums. I get a bit from there. Point is that I don't have so much to compare to, so take this with a grain of salt. I'm also a cripple when it comes to terms, but try to bear with me.

The beat, that is the background music is rather simple, repetetive and uninteresting. Luckily, it follows a rhythm. Rhythm is good.

Vocal artistry. From the more interesting and experimental beginning, where the vocals are looking for their own style and flair, the singing quickly turns into repetetive and unoriginal, which, unfortunately, also make them uninteresting. Even though I haven't been following the music style, even I've "heard this before", sort of. Unfortunately it leaves me cold.

The composition of the track is sort of, well, boring. There are no major changes 'cept from when the intro ends and the song begins. From that point on, it's just.. blah.

Conclusion: While this song does entertain me on the merit that it has rhythm and I like rhythm, the song doesn't really hit any groove. I find very little beauty in it, I'm not awed by the skill of any of the performers, whether DJ or singer, it doesn't carry a message that touches me at all, or if it does, it doesn't bring it close enough for me to see it. It doesn't put me in any sort of mood with it's atmosphere, and even with the rhythm it simply isn't powerful enough to do anything to me. So, while there is promise, unfortunately to this song I give a rating of:

3/10.

The song started so quietly I wasn't even sure it was on over the rattle of my keys, then suddenly jumped up. Pretty decent hard rock song. Reminds me of The 69 Eyes' latest. The vocalist was pretty good, I like the style, but there was some odd vocal twinges that gave me the feeling it may almost be parody. I also caught lines that sounded like he was reciting names of rock and metal albums. Checked up online and all was explained to me, including the 69 Eyes similiarity. Bloody Finns. This ruled out parody, because I've NEVER heard a 100% serious finnish artist, except possibly Trio Niskalaukaus, and even then maybe I don't get the joke. We're talking about a country in which Lordi charts ffs. Anyway, this left me with no real idea as to what the track sounds like, so I listened again. I'll say again, good, although it is REALLY similiar to Devils. Which detracts. A bit. I fucking love the 69 Eyes. A solid 7.5.

Oh JESUS.. Comparing this to the bloody 69 eyes? Good lord do the 69 eyes SUCK. The singing is plain god awful, and they play in playback :DD Saw the huge tsunami benefit concert where they played, drummer was doing completely different things than the audio track that came out when they had a long cut to the drummer.

Anyways, finns do a lot of serious music. Perhaps you just haven't heard any

My favourite Finnish bands are Finntroll, Korpiklaani, Ensiferum, Children of Bodom, (old) 69 Eyes (Savage Garden to Blessed Be), ...And Oceans, Impaled Nazarene, Lordi, Nightwish, Eläkeläiset, To Seperate the Flesh From the Bones, (old-mid) Amorphis, Darkwoods My Betrothed, Wintersun, Trio Niskalaukaus, Goathemy, Behexen, Turisas, Horna and Omnium Gatherum*. Okay, on reflection, Trio Niskalaukaus, Amorphis**, Horna, Behexen and ...And Oceans are pretty serious. Nightwish try and come off as being, but they will never live down Elvenpath, especially not the way they're going. Darkwoods My Betrothed are probably trying to be as well but...oh come on.

And seriously, listen to the song 'Devils' by 69 Eyes, if it ain't already plastered over the radio over there. Very similiar, the guitar lines if nothing else.

*I'm aware some of this is pop in Finland. All I can say is, I wish my country had your country's musical taste. Also, Humppa.

Unfortunately, as far as I know, Ensiferum is also serious.

Anyway, if that is your list of favourite finnish bands, you indeed do know a lot of them and I take back my words about that. Definately not my choices for good finnish bands though, not by a long shot. Though I do like ...And Oceans' Tears Have No Name and half of the "The Symmetry Of I The Circle Of O", the weird atmospheric half, that is.

Devils used to run on the radio a whole lot, of course it's old now so not anymore. And sure, I do like the riffs and composition of the song, especially it's beginning, but unfortunately the vocals spoil it. And that playback thing is pretty bad in my eyes. I'm not sure whether they always do it but still. Gnaws at me. If they had instrumental versions of their songs, I might listen.

Ah, but Ensiferum fall down at the hurdle that heavy metal is an almost entirely unserious genre. Taking yourself seriously just makes you more funny, and much better for escapism. You absolutely cannot be a fan of power or a lot of folk metal if you are incapable of lightening the fuck up. This is why Rhapsody videos are so incredibly funny.

I'll skip that since I already love Dream Theater. And I posted that when I was downloading it, took me a whole four minutes :O

I enjoyed it, although I haven't heard anything like it recently. It had a nice use of orchestral instruments but it felt a bit stretched out and I thought some bits were repeated too much. The vocals kept it together pretty well, kept me hooked on, although I wouldn't have minded if it had kept up the stronger singing. I liked it but I prefer things with a faster tempo during the climax and some stronger instruments to accentuate it.

Fragile Lives - Song Of Faith

Opens with some good, precise, drumming and guitar. Divulges into same good background with goddamn fucking screaming. Switches into an alternate rhythmic scheme. A bit later it goes into so actual singing (albeit BAD). New guitar and drums come in, some multi-guitar layering, actual singing comes back in. Around 3:40, it launches into a great driving line... ok shit the screaming came back and totally killed the moment. Shite.

This song gets a 6/10 for powerful, precise, and good hard playing with a very tight rhythmic union in the band. The singing (both types) left a lot to be desired.

Looks like it's time for The Sugarplastic again!!!

The Sugarplastic - Auld Lang Syne In 6/8 Time (Train Ride Out Of Town)

This is thoroughly an interesting song. While it doesn't have much to do with Auld Lang Syne, it does have similarities in the feel of the song to how a version of Auld Lang Syne might be recorded and made sound good.

Did that make sense? I guess not.

While beautiful and interesting, the song is far too short, considering the 2 minutes 20 includes both an intro and an outro in addition to the main portion of the song. The outro also feels sort of patch-on and doesn't really defend it's place in the song, even if it is kinda nice. Reminds me of Final Fantasy VII.

Definately a "song for a mood". A beautiful song that I'd love to listen to again(or more, I should say. I think I listened to it five times now), despite the fact that sadly it lacks a certain wholeness, and that it's far too short. However, I wouldn't put it into my regular listening category. But for certain moods, nice.

I give it a 5/10 for some good sides and some unfortunate bad sides.

Diablo - Read My Scars

I'm not a big metal fan (although I was, due to my brothers, forced to listen to Pantera over and over and...), but I found this rather listenable.

Pretty standard metal intro turning into a nice bridge.

Good vocals, liked the use of keyboard - not played all the way through, just when it adds something. Also enjoyed the keyboard/guitar solo portion towards the end; which kind of surprises me, because that's exactly why I'm not a big metal fan (more into hardcore when it comes to rock).

All told, a solid and listenable metal song. I wouldn't complain if someone dropped Diablo on the stereo. 7.5/10

It's in Japanese (I saw these girls many years ago in Okinawa - and they rocked my face off), so don't expect to decipher the lyrics.

The reason I typed that beginning half of the sentence (you deleted more than half of it), is that I wanted to let the poster know that I agreed with him, that the song didn't have much to do with Auld Lang Syne, but - and so on.
