Mr. Charming - The Ballad of the Powerful Man

Starts up with some rough funk stuff. A bit in switches to some distorted guitar and double time drums. Eventually settles into a thing with the funk beat and lyrics sung in way too much of a RHCP fashion. Next up came a part with a bunch of ambient guitar and wah stuff which was pretty cool. Then the verse came back again. Another different verse with some different lyrics stylings, then back to the doubletime drums and distortiony stuff. A little quiet funk bit with synthed out bass turning into a distorted bit at the end brought the song home.

So-so. It's very formulaic, basically a rougher RHCP sort of thing. Not too bad though. 5.5/10.

This song had a good chorus and some nice harmonies, but it gets a few points of for synthesized "ahh" noises used. It started off a liitle weak, but got alot better. After a few listens I really started to love the chorus and I also noticed they use a really wide variety of instruments in the song(piano, xylophone,synth,drums,guitar,bass,vocals,saxophone, violin). I also now know who Michael Caine is. 7/10

OK seriously, ARTIST - SONG NAME.

Seriously.

I am already a sometimes fan of Air, and this song was pretty enjoyable. My overall complaint with this band is that they don't utilize off beats, off rhythms, and other things that are off. They nestle right into a musical comfort zone that doesn't allow for many truly strange and beautiful moments. The song started out with some synthy stuff and an abysmally boring beat that continued through the rest of the song. The synth gradually turned into a choir-like bellish sound with lots of people singing about Radio Number 1. Fun stuff, but not very intressting.

I give it 5/10. There is better Air.

i don't really like horn sections (irrational dislike. i think i was beaten with a pile of ska albums as a kid or something) but thankfully they disappear after the first 30 seconds, so that's good. but this is cool. all over the place. oh wait, horns again. at least they've got some rockin guitars over the top so i don't notice them quite so much.

so overall i'd give this 7 out of 10. but only cos i have this thing with horns in rock.

anyways, here's something i should have put up earlier.

this piece is off an album merzbow did with a german electro-pop-ish-type group called ladybird. it's called "balance" and is very strange indeed. the left channel of the recording is merzbow doing a lot of noise pieces, or one very long one, i've never really been able to tell. the right channel is this german pop group doing in this case, a cover of kraftwerk's "computerlove" in german. kind of like a split album where you have to listen to both discs at once (or as the title kind of suggests, you can adjust the balance on your stereo and do it one artist at a time, but where's the fun in that?)

Merzbow & Ladybird-Netlove
I found this song best listened to as a playful experiment. The two channels don't really synch up but the listener is tricked into thinking they do. At times interference between the two songs makes it seem as if Merzbow's noise has a rhythm and at other times it seem's as if Ladybird's Kraftwerk cover is falling apart. At other points the sounds complement eachother making it seem as if a synth and a dial-up modem are somehow singing in harmony. More interesting for the way it messes with you than for it's listenability, though I never said that I liked easy music. 7/10

I used a Swans track some posts ago but this one was recorded about a decade later when they were doing different things and features the talents of their gospel trained female vocalist Jarboe.

I'm actually only a borderline Primus fan at this point (I don't actually own any of their albums, and not all of it is my bag), so I had never heard this song. It starts off like pretty much every other Primus song I know of, with a seriously smooth bassline. Claypool's vocals are less nasally here than usual, which is perfectly fine with me. I still have a really difficult time understanding the lyrics, but no big deal. Some pretty heavy guitar comes in, and it definitely gets rocking. Also, for a live performance, the sound quality is fucking great. It drags a little in the middle, but a damn solid song and another reminder for me to get off my ass and get some more Primus, dammit. 8/10.

Starts off with a little twiddling sort of thing, then a sort of...I dunno, comic sounding vocalist pops in. I dunno, not too keen on him. The song keeps sort of 'nice' and airy. Lots of false build ups. and little 'doo doo doo doo' keyboard bits. I take it the lyrics are ironic? I really do not like the bits where he goes 'loved ones, loved ones' etc. His vocals get pretty damn annoying, pitch perfect he ain't. And then the song ends. How nice. Picture postcard nice. 2/10 nice. *yawn*

Just listen to the landscapes it makes, the images it conjours, please. I tried to do this in talking to Salada about the mix I sent him, it's impossible to describe, but just...feeeeeel it!

Wyrd - Huldrafolk

You are right about the intro, well apart from the thunder which I found terribly cliche. Then the tempo picks up and it turns into a flailing badly produced metal monster. I really dislike that, it's only when the breaks come it becomes tolerable again. I think the bagground sample sounds phony, it does nothing for me, and I find the bashing away to be quite soulless. It lacks purpose and drive, it just goes on and on. Simply put it bores me.
Granted I don't normally like metal but this is just bad in my opinion.
I will give it 4/10

There's no way his music should be like. That's just simplifying it. Sure, he can wank with the best of them, but when he wants to, he can be a pretty kickass songwriter too. And the solo in that song is fucking FAST, just the whole song isn't.

Kate Bush-December Will be Magic Again:
Starts off with a pretty good piano intro. Can't decide if I like the vocals or not as they're pierceingly high at points. I've heard some helium voiced singers in my life but Kate Bush takes the cake here. The lyrics seem to be christmas/winter themed which doesn't really do anything for me. Even though it's only a five minute song I found it kind of dragged towards the end. and I was left feeling bored. Not to be negative but to me it was a 3/10

Now to teach you all a lesson in music you will hate here is part of one my favorite anti-roommate weapons and yes, I do genuinely like this stuff. Not suitable for fans of music but do listen anyway as I want to hear your reaction.

Well first of all, it's a crap recording. Like, played through a telephone bad. At least I hope that's the issue and the actual performance isn't so lo-fi (not a good thing in this instance). From what I can hear, it sounds like a band playing very slow noise music with some actual rhythm. It seems like something I could potentially enjoy, but then I could be completely wrong because I couldn't really, you know, hear it. 1/10 for the recording, uh...I don't know, let's give the music a Q/17.

the only thing better than tabla is tabla and breakbeats. i just wish this was longer. has a sort of talvin singh feel to it (full disclosire: i have only ever heard about 1 and a half talvin singh records, so i could be out here). let's say, 8 and a half out of 10. more points if it went and got really mental, or was another few minutes longer.

anyway, i briefly entertained this idea that since this is the FORCED listening thread, i could put up some horrible, overproduced pop trash (i am home with my family for a week or so. since i installed limewire on the computer after my sister's nagging, her music collection has worsened considerably. so pop trash is in abundance here) and just force someone to listen to it. but that would be cruel.

instead you get (come onnnn, upload faster before someone steals my spot!) evol intent — street knowledge. tremendously silly glitchy drum and bass. EI are known for their love of gangsta / wu-tang samples, but this is just silly (they are actually a very serious dnb production crew with some very serious tracks. this is not one of them. i hope). look out for the g-funk keyboard action in the middle there

Synthed-out rapping, slightly-off electricy beats, and tasty synthy lines. This was friggin' awesome. Salada, you can continue to be probably the winner of Forced Listening. This isn't forced listening, this shit is incredible. Eventually, the rapping all but dissappears and is replaced by upbeat electric drummy shit and synth beeps and boops. AWESOME.

I like the little bouncy keys thing. He's right, it is pretty relaxing, having a faint pseudo-reggae thing going on. I don't like the vocals much, they sound kind of irritating to me, but maybe that's because I'm so used to Les Claypool's vocals. I like the horn flourishes that are scattered throughout the song. It's overall a good listen, I don't mind it. 7/10

Starts off with a sort of funky vibe, which pretty much continues all the way through. Starts with sort of novelty vocals, but then goes into vocals that I recognise as being Les Claypool, which explains the the funky bassitude. As normal with Les, this is pretty much all about funky bass and awesome lyrics. Whilst normally not a fan of funky things, I am quite partial to a bit of Primus, and this reminds me a lot of a more laid-back Primus with a dash of proggy guitar and effects into the mix. Quite pleasant indeed. Sounds like Primus mashed up with Pink Floyd. I'll give 'er 8/10.

I was surprised, I actually kind of enjoyed this. It had a nice beat to it, I found myself bobbing a little in time. Very tasteful use of the violins. It kind of meanders a bit in places, but overall I liked it. I'm giving it a solid 7/10.

Because you crazy indie kids are so obsessive over the soft/loud/soft/loud thing, Iron Maiden - Paschendale.

These guys were in their forties when they wrote this, and they still rock your fucking face off.

Well, the guitar work struck me as very Maiden inspired indeed, even with a few moments of Gothenburg, the vocals though, are reminiscent of so many nu-metal/emo style bands that they threw me off. The drumming is tight though and keeps the song together with style. I can't say I'd make the effort to search them out further, but I won't call them terrible.

There was actually some pretty quality beats and riffs here, but not a whole lot else. The singer bugged me a bit. It's not like he was off key or anything, but something about his voice threw me off. Not to mention he was repeating one lyric a LOT. I did like the part where the bass and guitar switched off, though. Solid, but nothing I'd make a point of exploring further. 6.5/10.

It's time for some in your face thrash metal complete with a wanktastic solo from a former Satriani student. And it's not Metallica.

Very catchy, rocking, definintely some major head banging shit. I always thought metal was pretty shitty, but I had only listened to the stereo typical power chord, screaming about death, type. But I must say, this is pretty awesome and so full of energy. I must admit, the solo melted my face off, but what else could I expect from a Satriani student? I'll give it a 9/10 just to be a dick. The solos that follow are great, but I would have preffered some awesome bass solos as well or at least some spazzing out on behalf of bass and drums while the guitar player wanks away. That way, parts of it seem almost ... straight. Which I don't like. Nevertheless, they're fucking Primus, so they still rock my butt off. So...

They're pretty muhc like this in any latter day concert like crazy; They tend to jam alot more than they did sya, in 92. Allthough they have abig bass/drum/spazzout in Jellkit, which is such an awesome song that it actually hurts.

Starts out with a catchy little indie/garagey guitar lick that continues for while then drops into some more chordy stuff with vocals. Stuff stays pretty much the same until some distortion gets added. The singer sounds so familiar, it is not even funny. The part where it changes up just after the 3:00 mark was pretty cool. Otherwise, this song was fun and catchy, but lacked in creativity. Very together band.

I guess it was good enough to merit a 7/10.

This one has a slow build that risks getting tedious at the start, but maybe I'm just impatient. At first, it really seems like something along the same lines as Grayskul, except with much better production and better rhymes. Then, he starts spitting the title lines, and it's easier to get into. All in all, fairly solid.

Interesting, I can say this is the first time I've heard these guys. It's got a very electronic/almost abusrdly eighties electric pop sound ti it, and the vocal distortions are delightfully warped. The switch up at the 2:30 mark was cool, and the overall effect had me nodding along. Trippy stuff, I'd like to find more I admit.

Begins with a sort of chilled out vibe and some beepy stuff. Sampled? Then a sort of nasally guy starts rapping in a talky sort of way. If there's any other way to rap...oh, you know what I mean. He often seems to drop off the beat. Then he gets more singy. He's singing about how he's still alive. Or something, I can't make out a lot of it. Then he gets more talky and whatnot at the end. Okay I suppose. But...just doesn't do a thing for me. I feel bad giving it 1/10, but to be frank, I'm going to delete it right now to save space on my D Drive. I mean, fair enough, it's obviously got some effort into it, but at the end, the backing music is totally anathemic to my musical tastes, I don't have any connection with what he's saying, and well, just don't like it. I need the music to convey emotion with the voice, rap just bores me really.

Now, it's a thin and hard to define thing though, because this is one of my favourite songs ever:

When I started listening it sounded kinda formulaic, and I felt myself heading down that same electronic trail that so many Germans have led me down before. Luckily, albeit about 2.5 minutes into the sound, things begin to pick up. One of the better chorus sections that I have heard in awhile punctuate a steadily addictive song. Be patient and maybe (just maybe) Laibach will love you back. Rating 5.5/10

Now since I am new to the boards and feeling all lucky about finding QC I thought I should balance out my Karma and suggest a song about a poor unlucky man.

I should preface this by saying I strongly dislike country music, because my mother listens to more crappy country than I can stand. This isn't absolutely terrible, but it's just not something I'm into at all. I don't do twangy banjo riffs. While not unlistenable, the song is just plain boring. Not to mention that the singer sounds like the hick version of Chris Martin. 4/10, and that's being pretty generous.

Captain Beefheart - Moonlight on Vermont

I have heard much talk about this guy who is apparently pretty awesome.
So naturally I was kind of excited when the download was done.
What the fuck? That is the best way to describe my reaction when the first oddly broken and skew tones blares out, and Beefheart's vocals tumbles in with a bluesy hoarse quality to it.
It seems so spontaneous and chaotic, as if they had just made it up on the spot, though that is not the case as far as I can remember.
The lyrics sound pretty dadaistic which goes well with the music, and overall it is certainly exciting.
But I have no idea how to rate this to be honest, I mean it sounds like the work of a madmen, but as they say the line between madness and genius is thin.
-/10, it could be anything from 1 to 10, I really do not have a clue.

Next up is the best band in the world according to me, namely Under Byen!
