Edguy - Judas at The Opera

What a mouthful. Despite of the length it is fun and varied, if a bit cheesy.
It kicks off straight away and settles into the groove, then break at "solar system" and then there is a section which sounds a bit like Queen(voice effects and such).
Competently executed and well arranged as far as I can tell. I like the lyrics "it's pink and it's clear, he is the queer, he likes it into his rear!", pretension with a sense of humour.
The singer is also quite good, very fitting for the genre even if he kind of aping old school style. Which may be the point.

All in all fun track 8/10

Brudevalsen - Dirt in the Ground

This was damn close to a melodic death metal Tom Waits cover, may just be the Swedish attempt to emulate Mr. Wait's voice combined with the distorted guitar, but this sounded, to me, a LOT like Edge of Sanity: that old school Swedish sound. Plus the lyrical matter isn't a million miles of something Dan Swano could have written. The Opeth-like telephone vocals only increased this vibe. No idea what the rest of their stuff sounds like, of course. I gotta say, I enjoyed the hell out of this, though it did drag a little in the middle. Sweet track.

8.5/10

Skindred - Nobody

Also, incidentally, Skindred are one of the best live bands in the world. Their recorded tracks really do not do justice to how fun and insane they are in action. Their frontman is just fucking incredible.

i realy dont know what to say about this track, since i dont realy know alot about metal the only thing i could compare it to is Korn. its got some heavy bass and obviously some agressive vocals. being that im not to fond of metal, its pretty good so i give it a 4.9/10

now to take it on a softer level

On Skindred.
I've seen them live. Comparable to Korn, they rock harder, they flow better and they have a much better audience enthusiasm. I don't necessarily like them but the music is good. I like reggae to an extent but I hate anything remotely similar to Korn or Metallica. So, Skindred gets an 8/10 for the lead singers enthusiasm and rhythm, but for the guitar-ness... 2/10.

8/10 + 2/10 = 10/10 / 2 = 5/10 for Skindred.

The Subways - Rock'n'Roll Queen

I think the NME hype over this little band went over my head. But then again NME is hardly the gospel. Nevertheless this is a rapid rocker, where there isn't really much going on. Two lines of lyrics and straight into the chorus repeated twice, and to make it worse he screams the second chorus. He sounds like Nicholls from The Vines in his obnoxious moments, and they don't have the melody to make up for it. My brother calls me a lyricsfascist, so I will just gracefully skip the lyrics, suffice to say they are a bit banal. Overall I was bored with this track, which is not good when it is less than 3 minutes long. The singer's voice annoys me as well so it gets 5/10.

Wow.

I'm seriously impressed with this song. His voice is somber and melodramatic in the deeper tones of the song but when it comes to the chorus or what I would assume to be the chorus he picks up a whine/strain that is quite nice. The guitar/drumming is nothing overdramatic and it works for this song. There's a keyboard(i do believe) in the chorus that adds a pleasant to it. The backup vocals are faint and support the lead immensely if you happen to catch it. This is my third time through this song now. I've not really picked up on the lyrics yet, but I like it without knowing. There really is no room for improvement in this song.

10/10.

Okay, absolutely hate the singers tone (which is what I remember from the only other Coheed song I've ever heard), and he seriously needs to learn how to breath. I could hear him take a really quick and shallow breath before each line. Actually, now that I think about it, he kind of sounds like Geddy Lee, but much more abrasive. I guess it's what I'd get if I crossed Geddy Lee with an eight-year-old girl... Now that I've got my main complaint out of the way, let's get into the meat of this.

The song as a whole is really well-done. I love the main riff at the beginning, though I could live without the little tail they put on the end of it. I also really like how the drums and bass change to keep it interesting. The vocal melodies are pretty good, but really repetetive. It's awesome how that chorus-type-thing ("You are my favorite") goes back into the verse the first time, when everyone drops except the guitar and then they all do hits.

The bridge starts out a little too proggy for me (and I'm a huge fan of prog, but not unison sections that don't really seem to add too much), but goes into a really cool high-energy section before getting soft. It starts off the build in a satisfying manner, but I'm not a fan of the guitar lead figures (in all sections of the song, actually), and it continues to build subtly enough.

Really like the layering of vocals in the ending section and how so many things are intertwining and fitting together, even if I do believe they're rather poorly excuted. The pitch isn't really that bad, but the tone is just annoying.

I'd have to say a really well-constructed song despite the things I don't like about he composition. Sorry to keep going on about the singer (especially as I am such a poor singer personally), but he really just ensures that I'm never going to buy the band's CDs. If they put somebody behind the mic who didn't make me want to strangle an ostrich, then I'd deffinitely pick up some of their music.

7/10. As vitally important as the vocals are to me, the song is really good.

Female Vocalist.
That's cool. I think her voice is kind of plain though. The back up vocals are also female and add a nice undertone with higher notes at certain parts. The singers range is quite nice. She doesn't squeak at all and when she reaches for those ceiling notes it actually sounds good. Most of the song sounds the same to me. It's a good sound, but it's monotonous.

I really like the introduction to this even the affect on the guitar. The guitar work in most of this song is fairly simple and repetitive. I could do without the effects pedal on the solo or really the solo in general. Mostly this song reminds me of a Fantasy-sounded Avril Lavigne. It's composure is well put together but the guitar is monotone, the lyrics get repetitive and if I hadn't been listening for the drum and bass in this song, I wouldn't have heard it. It's something I'd pass by on the radio.

4/10 for the decent composure.

hm...I think I like it!

I' really no good at describing (or critiquing) music this way, but imagine The New Pornographers, but less electronic and more Rock. The cynical touch of the Female lead's voice fits in just right, and the overall flow of the song just sounds good. if anything, the gap in the middle is just short of being too long.

I give it a 9/10

I think I'll Mix it up and give you THREE choices (but really, I suggest you listen to both songs).

Now I remember where I've heard Nevermore before, the drummer in my band in high school was always trying to get me to listen to them, and he played some for me in his car. Oddly enough, he hasn't given me any yet.

I know at one point, there's a lead-in to one section that's just double strokes on the ride. I only remember this fact because he and I make fun of it so much, because it's just such a simple concept that it would have been rediculously hard to think of.

Nevermore - Narcosynthesis

The worst thing I can say about this is that the tone, especially of the rhythm guitar, is pretty generic. Could easily be a hundred bands. The singer's voice is pretty cool, not a wailer or a screamer, he's actually singing, fairly low.
It's something I would listen to when I wanted background noise, not music to concentrate on. The lead guitar was quite good without being amazing, as was the drumming.

I will add that my headphones only work in one ear, and it's 3am so I can't use my speakers... so if there's amazingness happening in the right channel, ignore me.

I will also add that the more of a band's music I hear, the more I appreciate them. I can hate a single track, but then like it once i've heard a dozen others and gotten a feel for their style.

EDIT: It's the next morning, and I decided to give it one more shot... I like it a lot more after a few listens. The vocal harmonies are really nifty.

Yeah, firstoff, if you read the other thread: totally one of my favorite Sabbath tracks ever. This cover seems to lose some of the... aesthetic feeling? I don't know. It's certainly faster and more upbeat and... sludgier, if that's a word. Until it breaks into the little bass/bongo latin-esque thing that's so awesome it hurts. And a totally different solo, which is fancy. Good cover? Yeah. Do I like it better? Myself, I still have some fond feelings for Ozzy and the Oh-Lawd-Yeah's original version. Will I check out Kyuss? probably. 9/10

Steve Vai - For The Love Of God

I allway heard my guitarist friends talk about him in awe, but I never actually checked his stuff out.
Anyway, atarts off with a good guitar melody and simple back up by the rythem section. His improv's are really good, and the "lets shred the fuck out of my guitar" part is done very good.
I never was a fan of guitarists solo works, mainly because they could get very very masturbatory (or maybe this is what guitarists think when they listen to Jaco). But Steve Vai does it without being cocky and without over shreding.
8/10, and if I was a guitar player I'd probably give this a 20/10.

Miranda Sex Garden - A Fairytale about Slavery

First of all their bandname is really misleading, I though it was something like Jack off Jill or the like. Having said I really like it, it starts out with this renaissance fair/sea shanty flute(?) melody. That is then mixed with a sort of funeral march percussion and a female singer's gorgeous voice. For some reason I don't mind the repeated lyrics, mainly I think on the strength of her voice and the beautiful arrangement. Later on violins and rock guitar enter. It becomes predominant about halfway through, and it picks up in urgence. The end is a bit odd with the silence and music box playing, but all in all a really beautiful track, and a cool idea to mix rock and medieval music.

It gets a 9/10 since the ending is a bit unnecessary.

Now we are heading into art-rock territory with Jomi Massage.

Starts of with some pretty distonal slides. Then the drums and piano kick in, and things turns pretty awesome. I really like the lead singer's voice. She reminds me of someone, but I can't really remember who.
Anyway, I like the guitar that joins in a bit later. Quite simple, fo sho, but it sounds good. The distonal bits come in again after some time, meh.
After that, the song gets a bit harder, with a bit more guitar and some voices in the background. I really like the ending, too. The piano bit reminds me of the Tintin theme. :/

Even though I have a tendency to dislike art-rock, this one's pretty darn good. + Bonus points for Tintin association. 8/10

The intro is really cool, the jingle bells at the start remind me a bit of a Mew song. I'm not entirely sure what he's actually saying but the vocal melodies are great; the music in the first coupla minutes, while subtle enough to let the singer guy do his thing and make him the focus of the song, is interesting in its own right. Very upbeat and catchy. The instrumental bit in the second half is groovy, nice crescendo. Still sounds like Mew btw (that's a good thing). I endorse this band and would definitely listen again / get an album.

Good song structure, good music, good singing. My only complaint is that I want to know what the guy said, what language was that?

It's nice. However, I don't like the way the singer attacks each line he sings. I also don't like the extra effects on the on the voice. The melody is pretty wandering and indistinct. I mean, the only reason he seems to be singing is to deliver the lyrics, and I don't ever listen to lyrics. That said, the song construction is okay. It starts softer and gets bigger at points, but on the other hand there just seems to be discreet dynamic levels, and there's no in-between, no build. The ending also seems to just fizzle. It's rather indicative of the rest of the tune. It's arbitrary and indistinct. I don't think I'd ever actually listen to it, but it's reasonable background music.

I think this is a nice, good jazz song. It's something you would bop your head or dance to, and it's just got a pretty upbeat vibe. I would definintely be interested in the whole cd. Seems like it's easy to get into, for the casual jazz listener or the hardcore listener. It's not outstandingly impressive, but it's not bad. I'll give it 8/10.

Opens with some sort of chorused out keys, or something, I dunno, then a guy comes in with very soft, spoken vocals, which I can not hear a word of, and there is also guitar. This goes on for about three minutes, then everything but the guitar drops out. Then the guitar gets louder and more distorted for a bit, then quiet, then back to the old...this is 7 minutes long!? 2/10.

This track rocks. Hard. It's not exactly the most original thing I've heard, distorted guitar, fast drums and some screamed vocals. But I happen to enjoy that formula, and this is pretty catchy, especially the chorus. And I love the vocals. Bit short though, just over two minutes. I'll be sure to check these guys out. 7.5/10

Darkest Hour - Vertunis, Aequitas

The first 4 minutes are just an onslaught of metal. The only problem I can come up with is that the intensity and theme basically stays the same the whole time, and it reaches two identical climaxes instead of building up to one real one. Then a little guitar picking comes in on its own, is joined by a well-orchestrated second guitar, and the metal starts back up again. Then it dies off again and ... piano? What? The drums come back in, along with the light guitar picking. Then the metal comes back and two guitars play off each other for a while. Things get softer for a bit and then ... SOLO! (Took them long enough.) The solo doesn't impress me too much ... it's pretty standard as far as metal solos go (not that I'm the biggest authority on that). Then the piano comes back and is all slow and dirgeful. ... and that's the whole last minute.

The riffs are good, the solo's OK at best, but what I really like is the rhythm section. I could really hear the bass, and it was laying down some pretty good stuff. The drum fills were good too.

8.5/10!

Very few songs I've ever heard approach the heavy groove of this track's second half. The last 2 1/2 minutes are ridiculous.
