Hahaha, you've summed up my initial reaction to that Kyuss tune perfectly. When I got into them a few years ago I had no idea why.

Fuzzy guitar, horribly snarled vocals, aimless wandering solo... why is this the greatest rock song ever written?

Gotta love Kyuss.

Very few songs I've ever heard approach the heavy groove of this track's second half. The last 2 1/2 minutes are ridiculous.

Hmm... in a nutshell, it gets worse the more I think about it, but just listening to this track without trying to deconstruct it is very fun.

The singer's voice is, ah, pleasantly destroyed. The whole song, though, reminds me of some of the worse jam sessions I've been at: most people playing the same thing over and over again with someone occasionally trying and failing to do an interesting solo. The bass groove is fun throughout, though, and when this song is most enjoyable is when you quit trying to compare it to rock or metal and just enjoy that funky groove.
P.S. Their guitarist needs to learn music theory, IMHO.

The intro could've done with being either about 45 seconds shorter or a tad more interesting IMO. Reminded me a bit of VAST except their timing is usually better...

The rest of the song is pretty standard Stabbing Westward fare, interchangeable but catchy riffs. The last minute is probably my favourite bit of this song, awesome climax at the end. However, the vocals are kinda spoiled for me by the fact that I've heard the self-titled album and I know this guy can sing really well, so why is he doing this annoying whispering thing throughout? It fits the tone of the song I guess but gets a bit monotonous by the second verse.

Not their best work but neither is it their most annoying by far, 7/10.

I like how even through the drums are often quite oppressive and have a very tribal-esque rhythm, the song is very nice and relaxing, and I also think that especially the texture that manages to be smooth even with some dissonance and some distorted instruments. I wonder what language this is in. I don't really care, though. The vocals are really nice and do a very nice job as another instrument. It drags on a bit, though. But when the only problem I have with music is that it lasts too long, I don't really think I have a problem with it at all. I mean, I listen to bands that make albums that are just one track, so I can't complain about something 7 minutes long.

It's not intense listening at all, but it's good if you don't want intense listening. There's not much going on, really, but what there is is ear-pleasing.

I like it. 8/10.

Believe it or not, this is a guy singing. I'm not sure why the name suggests otherwise. This is the only music I've ever heard that seemed indescribably familiar the first time I heard it. The weird thing is, this has happened to most of the people I've shown it to. It's minimalist as hell, but it's absolutely beautiful.

Pretty simple but not too badly so, it still works well. Ah man, I love JJ and this song's no exception. Simultaneously eclectic and really laid back, it's interesting without being too annoying and jerky. Very uplifting, summery music. Not quite up there with Animal Chin IMO but still a funky tune. Gotta love the warm synths. 9/10

The Fall Of Troy - Ghostship Part IV

INSANITY! And it never grooves. In fact, it seems the goal of this track (and possibly the band) is to be as crazy as possible. Well, the bridge starts out groovy, but then the lead guitar comes in and kills that. I think it's just a little too fast. It kind of seems like they're struggling a little bit to play it right and stick everything in there. The screaming is okay, but it's not really a style I like, and the singing is...well, it would have been better had he kept screaming, in my opinion. Overall, it's not my taste in the least, but I think if they slowed it down just a few bpm, it would be immesuarably better.

A bit odd? Way to understate the wierdness of it. Anyway, I happen to like The Bad Plus (they played in my town just last week but i couldn't go) but had never heard this song. It starts out with a slow, sombre piano, joined soon by drums and bass. It sounds almost nothing like the original, except for the piano which carries the vocal line. Anyway, I'm gonne give it a 8/10, I really like it.

I'm not too sure which genres they're trying to mix here, but it works decently. The opening with the effected piano sounds like it's going to be something disco-ey or poppy. It isn't at all, but you don't feel as if you've been cheated, which I guess is good. The vocalist's voice is lovely, if perhaps a bit too soft. If it weren't for the varied instruments it would get a bit monotonous after a while, and while it's not too bad, I'd like to have heard a little more variation in the guitar and the overall rhythms though. The occasional fitting dissonant chord does catch your attention back when it fades.

the guitar and the drums have this weird cold sound to them, and given the apparent subject matter of the song, that might have been intentional. i'm not a big fan of the legion of female backup singers they've got here. it all sounds a wee bit overproduced, but i'm a fan of sparser arrangements anyway. i suppose it's good for what it is, but i'm not really a big fan of the sound. 4/10

T'was. And while that doesn't make for particularly fantastic music it makes for fairly strong political commentary, which, while it was made in the mid-80s Thatcherian era, are still somewhat applicable (again) today.

It's quite funk-ay, but even though they try to spice it up with a bit of variation, it gets boring after a while. It's more like background music than anything.

Starts off with very sharp drums and a sort of reggae style synth line or possibly very distorted guitar. Adds into it with pop-punkish vocals, that are an immediate turn-off. Seems to be a love song? Yeah. Quite repetetive, but not I suppose in any way offensive auditally, except maybe the vocals at points. Doesn't really seem to start or lead anywhere though. I'll give it 5/10.

Now, let's go somewhere very strange.

Acid Bath - Scream of the Butterfly

This track is not going to sound like you'd expect, btw. It's not even really metal, more one of their ballads.

Acid Bath - Scream of the Butterfly

I really like this track. The guitar sound is appropriately spacey (unless that's a bass, it could be either), there's a second guitar in there that does some cool stuff, and the drummer does a good job. The lyrics are awesome, too. This would convince me to get more Acid Bath music if I didn't already have a lot more music I want to listen to than I actually can.

Mid-70's metal from Australia. The album this track is from, Volcano Rock, is basically a bit like the album Black Sabbath would've made between their self-titled and Paranoid, which means in my opinion that it's the album that anything after Vol. 4 should've been. And the song's about Moses!

Buffalo - The Prophet:

So this song starts off with a guitar riff, sounds pretty cool but not for me personally. It has a rather slow beat, that is about the same for the whole song. I'm not sure if you can call this metal, well not like modern day metal anyways which would make sense why it's from the mid 70's. The solo is pretty good since it fits in with the song well but like i said not for me. The vocals are pretty good, even though being that I'm not very religious doesn't interest me at all. It seems like the song just drags on for quite some time with different guitar riffs that all seem to sound about the same even though I realize they aren't. I would give this song a 6.5/10 overall. (I'm trying not to be biased)

Short and to the point, this one. Feels like the band want to be The Offspring or Syndrome of a Down - they have the same frenetic shouldn't-you-really-be-carrying-a-skateboard? vibe to them. On the other foot, they also reminded me of the Supersuckers, whose hilarious "I Want The Drugs" should be forcefed to every American teenager with a guitar and a garage. All in all, neither offensively bad nor a work of genius. 5/10.

Interesting review. I like it mainly because it is great background music, but it's also got a high level of subtlety to it. It's also entirely acoustic; the ambient effects were achieved by recording in a gigantic underground water cistern that functions as a perfect echo chamber and whispering gallery.

Score out of 10, BTW?

Sonata Actica - I Want Out.

Wow that is one catchy opening riff. Actually, the entire song is pretty catchy, hooky riffs, simple drums, power metal falsetto vocals and even the solo is pretty straightforward. An excellent power metal tune, 8.5/10.

The Polysics - For Young Electric Pop

I have heard Domo Arigato Mr. Roboto so I was prepared for their spazzy madness. It's a fun and bouncy track, exactly what I would expect of japanese synthpunkers(or something). What appeals to me is that it is not random, it's just overflowing with wacky ideas. The chorus is somewhat disturbing with what I hear as "fuck gigantic fuck!" which may just be really accented. You could think that such a packed track would be tiring but as it ticks in at 2:50 it never does. Though an album this full would be a bit too much.

8/10 for spazzy fun

Oh wow, i love this track!

Unsuprisingly, there's comparisons to Bjork there and unsuprisingly, that's why i love this song. Her voice is quite haunting. Very atmospheric too, helped by the fact that i can't understand what she's saying :p. I would say the whole 'creepy tinkle piano' bit near the end is a little cliche, but it's actually a fitting end to the track in general.

8/10 for ethereal beauty.

Conjure One - Manic Star

It appears that an announcement has been kept from us all. Enigma and Evervescence have bred, and given to the world a bouncing baby band called Conjure One.

Unlike their progenitors, however, Conjure One have written more than one song. They're also neither overwrought, pretentious nor French, all of which are points in their favour. Points against: they're not particularly original.

Overall, it's competent but workmanlike. 6/10.

Dave Randall - Take It Easy, But Take It.

I like this song. Even though it's very slow and relaxed, it manages to stay relatively interesting all the way through.
Reminds me of some of the songs from Whiskey For The Holy Ghost. There's not even that much to say about it.
It's a really simple song, but it's great, anyway. 8/10

Starts out with syntheseized beeps that will loop throughout almost the entire song (with some variation I guess). Then a little beat comes followed by another set of syth'd beeps. At about 1:15 some guitar comes in. The lyrics, seem pretty mediocre to me. I almost want to ask if some of this stuff is sampled 'cause all of this sounds so familiar. It isn't exactly terrible but it also isn't something I'm gonna be listening to again. Also, either they ripped off the Killers or the Killers ripped them off (or they both were derivative from the same bands). Either ways the comparison isn't good if you don't like the Killers. 4.5/10

Man Man - Engwish Bwudd

Very inspired madness, it has some piratey elements and cabaret/theatrical elements that make delicious rum.
It starts with some falsetto voices speaking gibberish and then the whole piratey thing gets going with wordless shouting and barbershop quartet backing. There is some slight Waits inspiration about the whole rickety arrangement and the total disregard for singing in key. The chorus if you can call it that is a mix of the falsetto voices saying "I smell the blood of an englishman" and one of the singers saying gibberish.
I might be biased because I have an effinity for insane sea shanties but this song is really good. They are like the freak twin of The Decemberists or some sort.

The recording is a bit bad, but then again nothing can stop Lorenzo Woodrose and co. from rocking out. He is probably also the only one who would call his sideproject Spids Nøgenhat meaning Pointy Nakedhat.

This is seriously reminding me of something, but I'll be hedgehogged if I know what.

As advertised, the recording was a bit on the lo-fi side so I can't attest to anything in the way of musical quality. Lyrically and tunewise it's short and to the point, with a little bit of ambient style at the start before it starts to rock out... oh, I'll just go and listen to it again, shall I?

Rating: 7/10

I found this little curiosity on an album of unsigned bands last year. I don't expect you to rate it highly - it's not the usual kind of stuff you lot seem to like - but it's not bad and I'm sure that 99% of you won't have heard it.

I ... what? I have no idea what this is. It's sorta pop, sorta techno, sorta [insert some distinct genre of techno that I can't differentiate from the others], sorta [insert another of same] ... and there's a reasonable bit of rock in there, I guess. It's constructed in a pretty straightforward fashion, not a whole lot of interesting stuff going on. The vocals are bland, in my opinion, but they're not poorly-done. I want to dislike it but it's not that bad. I'll give it a 5/10 because I don't know what else would be appropriate.

OK, I really hope a lot of people look at what I'm posting and think "Well, why's that up here, everyone knows those guys!" but I'm pretty sure that only a few people will. It's a shame that so few people know these guys, considering how important they were in music history (they basically invented psychedelic rock, inspiring Pink Floyd among others).

Woah, tempo shift. Caterwaulin' YEAH! Funky synth sounds... awesome, good, excellent.

Dragging a little in the middle, the guitar's doing something different, but the recording's kinda crappy so I can't hear it very well.

The end's coming to a nice finish, I can finally hear what that guitar in the background is doing...

I liked it. The recording was bad though... so unless that's the intended aucoustic characteristics... 8/10.

Dj. Format - The Hit Song Feat. Abdominal

Starts off with a chilled sort of jazz vibe, then goes on to a sort of ...I dunno the word...peaceful sort of rap thing. The jazz vibe continues on as the instrumental. The song seems to be very self-reflexive, though I can actually make out the words in this song. There's some pretty clever wordplay, and it made me smile on one or two occasions (More hits than Jimmy dropped at Woodstock!) and so forth on that bit. This might well actually be the best rap song I've ever heard. I'm still not sure I would really choose to listen to it over other things, but it was amusing, not annoying, and only a bit boring. So I'm gonna give this an extremely good (for me on rap) 6/10. I'm sure any indie hip-hop fans here would probably be LOVING it.

E Nomine - Mitternacht [Extended Version]

bum bum bum bum-ba-dum bum bum bum.......
opens up with some techno-dancey type stuff. pretty standard. techno-dancey stuff continues for a bit, and then there's some laughter. around a minute and a half there's some german guy who sounds like he's having phone sex with the listener. then he gets a bit louder, and more rhythmic, and is joined by a chorus of other rather excited germans. it just sort of follows a standard song format after that. verse, chorus, verse, chorus, breakdown, verse chorus. nothing terribly impressive, and nothing you havn't heard before. fans of industrial type music would enjoy this.

So, it starts out all wandering with distinct melody, but a bunch of stuff going on. The acoustic guitar sounds really poor, though. It sounds sloppy (not just rhythmically, it's also not consistent in volume and attack). It also sounds like trying to play metal rhythm guitar on an acoustic. Probably because it's only using power chords, which leads to a boring an anemic sound. I like that other guitar bit (the one with a bunch of delay on it), but I don't want to hear it the entire song. It builds a little bit, but only in volume. Nothing changes harmonically, melodically or rhythmically, except it sped up a little. Judging by the quality of the acoustic guitar player, I don't think that was intentional. The vocal melody isn't too bad, but the singer doesn't know how to sing softly, so her voice just sounds weak and unsupported. The entire track just sounds kind of flaccid and uninteresting. Plus, they really shouldn't have ended it that way. It just kind of fizzles.
3/10 - For excessive underproduction and lack of variety.

I was going to post some Webern, but the pianist on the recording I have isn't very good. So, then I was going to put up some Michael Daugherty, but the piece I want to put up is a verly large file (high quality rip), and I don't have the CD with me because I dropped it off at my college radio station to get uploaded so I can play it on air. Alas, I'm stuck with John Adams (sorry it's so large, the other one was larger):

If you open a high quality rip in Audacity you can convert it to a shitty mp3 format which will be about 1/10 the original size.
