John Adams- Lollapalooza

Not bad. Starts with a Gil Evans feel to it but gives way to the sort of music they play from speakers in the lines at theme parks. Skillfully composed, intense when it can be- the middle brass and vstrings section is a killer. 6/10

The Birthday Party - Blast Off!(2:18)

I am actually vaguely familiar with The Birthday Party, seeing as how I love late Nick Cave and I wanted to see what he did early on.
It is as you said, beginning with Nick Cave yelling "blast off!", razorsharp guitar and groovy drums. Nick is being his former manic self, which might come as a shock if you have only heard stuff like No More Shall We Part. It is not quite the blast off! he is talking about but nice enough. Though it is not the best Birthday Party song I have heard, Deep in The Woods and Six Strings that Drew Blood are better in my opinion.

But nevertheless it is pretty good 7/10

I like the string intro, and the vocals are nice and chilled out when they kick in. Good interaction between the male/female vocals (although I do prefer the latter).

Not entirely sure what the lyrics are all about but once it picks up, it's very catchy and upbeat while still having a kinda mellow feel to it. Pretty damn cool, especially the way it kinda builds up and gets more energetic throughout. 8/10

Porcupine Tree- Heart Attack in a Layby

God this is a depressing song. Slow acoustic guitar playing melody throughout with lots of choir style vocals overdubbing eaching other (entering a little before midway). The lyrics could be more subtle "I've got this feeling inside/don't feel so good." But for the most part they're introspective in a good way. 7 out of 10

This song might not have been too bad, if it weren't for the annoying rhythmic breaks in the first half of the song and incredibly irritating backing vocals in the second. Apart from that, it's completely pedestrian; not really one to broaden anyone's horizons. 2/10

It's a pretty cool tune. 7/4 is a cool time signature if done well, and it's done reasonably well (the best way to do it would be in a way that I didn't even notice it was in an odd time). I'm always a sucker for vibes, too. I'm not a huge fan of the same lyrics being repeated over and over again (towards the middle of the song), but it does add stuff in over time, and I really don't mind her voice. Plus it's an actual melody. I do think it is maybe 30 seconds to a minute too long. They don't really do anything more with the last bit of the song. Sure, they add more things, but it doesn't really add to the song. Not a huge fan of that really electronic-sounding keyboard bit that's added in the middle. The rhythms just seem really arbitrary.

Overall, 7/10, because I like it more than I don't.
Niacin - Spring Rounds
It's a cover. 5 points if you can figure who wrote the original, without doing a search. I'll let you know after someone reviews it.

Well, I'm quite adept at counting, actually. I just noticed it was wierd and figured "7/4 is probably about right," so I started counting to seven, and it fit. There's no accent on beat one, too, which is cool.

Anyways: Niacin-Spring Rounds

Starts out with some organs and (I think a piano) which play variations of the same melody back and forth throughout the song with increasing urgency torwards the end. I wish it did more but I don't really have anything bad to say about it. On the otherhand I was sick of it after two listens- so I'm not sure what score to give it. 4.5 out of 10 I guess.

This songs kinda charming really. It kinda reminds me of some people who've never heard any heavy music trying to be heavy. Repetitive, dischordant (I'm sure deliberately but it doesn't work) riffs, muffled vocals passed through several effects pedals, pedestrian drums. When the guitars are on their own I die a little inside, though the bass-work isn't too bad. Unbelievably tame though. It sounds a bit like a bad pub band who drunk too much and pressed the wrong buttons on their amps. 2/10 for the bass I suppose.

It seems I must still educated the world in THE HEAVY. I shall do it in a fun way.

I think I love the song just out of the novelty effect. I'm going to review a song just so I can post the original. I'll edit as soon as I listen to the heavy education. And I will definitely play it so the windows crack.

Oh hell yes (wrote this when the song first started). I'm not too familiar with this genre of music, so I don't know what to call it, but it's almost as if Rammstein discovered how to play a new song, and got a lot heavier (just for clarification, I like Rammstein, but all their songs pretty much sound the same). Would this be called industrial? Anyways, it certainly rocks my face. Heavy and pounding and full of energy! Just the way I like my music. I'm not a fan of the bridge at the very beginning (it reminds me a whole bunch of some parts of my friend's technical death metal band's songs), but then when the guitars come in, it does start rocking. They keys parts are killer, too. I'm going to go with 8/10, because I like it and it's fun, but it's not some of the most amazing music I've ever heard.

I'll edit further when the song uploads, which might be in a bit, because I might have to leave before it uploads.

Stravinsky - Spring Rounds

Very slow, very simplistic. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but there's nothign about it that particularly grabbed me. Obviously, it builds a lot later. The accent work is nice, but what does loud discordant brass have to do with spring? I dunno, I just wasn't sold on this one. 5/10

Well, you see, it's one movement in a larger ballet about a tribal ritual where a virgin is sacrificed by dancing herself to death. I've seen the score to the movement that represents her dancing herself to death, and it's scary. Pretty much every measure is a different time signature (not that scary to the musicians, but I feel sorry for the dancers).

Weird bubbling start and strange dude talking over the top. Kicks in with odd harpy sounding keys.
Ballady vocals. I've pretty much decided I'm not going to like it at this point.
Oh, change of plan, I really like the layered vocal chorus.
Verses don't cut it for me... I'm really hoping this is going to get really heavy soon.
AH YES. GUITARS. Half way and we have guitars. I like their choice of guitar tone. It's cool.
Still seems a bit too poppy and positive for my liking.
Seems like they're just having a big spazzed out jam. Very odd.
I give it a 6/10. It's good but it's not something I'd get into. Bit too proggy (am I right?).

Opens with acoustic guitar and something I can't quite identify...vocal percussion? Electronics? I dunno. Sounds quite good. The vocals aren't really my thing, too weak and whiny. Piano joins in in the background, then the guitar moves into more country-style fingerpicking territory, with more strange electronic or unusual instrument effects. Then the sound gets a bit more of a Saddle Creek echo as the singer warbles in an intensely un-endearing fashion, before some pretty nice fast-strumming guitar or banjo parts. leading off into a fade-out ending. Despite the singer doing his best to ruin this, and the dischord between vocal and instrumental segments, this wasn't that bad a track. I'll give it 6.5/10.

And now for something INTENSE.

Current 93 - Horsey [Live at the Union Chapel]

This song includes one of my favourite moments in all music. I'm sure you'll guess what it is, but in case you don't, then if I just say,

'BROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN'

then it will become clear.

And for goodness sake listen to the lyrics.

i got bored with this song. it's something i'd expect to hear on the local alternative station, and all the trendy scenester high school kids would gobble it up. sorta bland and generic. but it's good to hear that they've given up on singing like angsty little girls. 1.5/10

I quite like the girl's vocals but really, deep spoken word over slow guitars really doesn't cut it for me.
Quite possibly the most boring track since Mr Kitschock by Brothomstates.
Unimpressed by both the guitars and vocal style. I think the lack of other instruments really kills it for me. I really like the lyrics, some of them are seriously cool, lines like;
Impending storm rise up rise up
Oh demons I shall shame you!
Look down the barrel of my gun and one by one I'll name you
I give it a 4/10 because the lyrics add 3 points and the chorus adds 1.
(Not slagging cause you slagged AFI, I just wanted to see what sort of music you're into).
In AFI's defense though, that song is quite a lot more complex than you give it credit for, give it another couple of listens. Enough of that though.

Ramallah are Rob Lind's (of Blood For Blood) new band. He plays all the instruments apart from drums. Despite being one of the godfathers of NY hardcore, he's taken a different direction from traditional hardcore with Ramallah.

Not exactly my kind of music, but pretty good stuff. Some sections were pretty interesting musically, some not. The singer sounded vaguely like Zack De La Rocha at times. Maybe that's just my imagination since the subject was kind of similar.

Mine now: Stan Rogers - Barrett's Privateers
Stan Rogers is a bit of a Canadian folk hero: an amazing dude who really popularized the traditional newfie accapella singing. He was in a plane crash in '83. He kept going back in to bring people out of the flaming plane 'til he didn't come out.

I've heard his brother live, he's one of the backup singers here.
Anyway, this song is the purely form of the ballad I've ever heard.

Yes- this song IS where the catchphrase comes from. It's a brilliant, early 70's soul/funk assault on mainstream culture and the patronising nature of white america. Gil's songs are usually either funky piano ballads or beasts of this kind: Street poetry (which, amazingly, aren't pretentious Ginsberg rip-offs), great bass riffs, flutes and, arguably- the birth of rap and hip-hop.

Dude, you're not the one who's supposed to be reviewing it.

That said, I'm pretty much with you except on the whole "assault on mainstream culture and the patronising nature of white america" thing. It's just another song in the "free your mind and your ass will follow" vein and as such it's been sampled to hell and gone. Taken on its own merits as a song, though, it's competently performed and written and I wouldn't be insulted to have it on my hard drive. 7.5/10.

I must be insane to put this one up, but I'm feeling horribly nostalgic tonight: a remix of Ben Daglish's classic theme to The Last Ninja.

The original is basically the same tune, but done on a C64 SID chip so there are fewer overlaying voices. If you've heard any SID music, you should be able to guess roughly how it sounds. (EDIT: Which you probably haven't, seeing as how when this track was written you were busy gestating. Man, I feel old.)

AMAZING NINJA EDITING:
My god... this like a Hawaian love song... I'm finding it seriously weird.
The lead guitar adds some interest but it's still a very odd song compared to their other work. I definately recommend Muse but songs like Hyper Music, Bliss, Sing For Absolution, Plug In Baby(... basically all of Origin Of Symmetry and Absolution) are much better.
So in conclusion, get Absolution, Origin Of Symmetry and Showbiz before whatever crazy album this came from.
6/10.

Down In The Park (featuring Marilyn Manson)-Nine Inch Nails

The intro drags on a bit before the drums come in. Once the instrumentals come in, it falls into the groove it wants to be in. Manson's vocals are pretty awesome. I can see myself listening to this again for the size of the sound. The drums are particularly large-sounding. Overall, I think it works and while the industrial-y sound of it isn't something I'd listen to on a regular basis, I'd put it on a mix CD.
7.2/10!

Oh man. This is my first post ever on this topic and I feel underqualified as a music critic, but oh man. This song is whack. I normally listen to pretty short songs, but this- even in its 10 minute + glory, I really like. It's all insanely lively right from the very beginning. It kind of gets repetitive, as the same vocal samples and stuff drift in and out with a whole bunch of these space-like squeals. I feel like the goodness of this could infact be condensed into a shorter song format, but I still like it. A lot.

Fuck, I'd just finished listening to the Acid Mothers track buit yu beat me to it.

Levenus Supremus: Some Nintendo-esque bleeps and bloops in the beginning made me feel scared this was going to be some awful comedy band. Then it turned all electronic-punk like Le Tigre but poppier and more bleepy bloopy with some sample of screams that sounds right out of a SNES game. Incredibly bouncy song with lyrics that belong in a Rocky Horror show. I could probably enjoy listening to this band but not all the time or it would burn out.
