The Last Show You Saw
El Opium:
Sightings at the hall mall in Iowa City. Twas skronk tastic, you know it's a good noise-rock show when half the audience run to the back and the other half totally love it. I also have to respect their singer for choosing to play even though he'd had an epileptic attack earlier that day.
a pack of wolves:
I saw Agent of The Morai, Red Stars Parade, Bendal Interlude, Executive Distraction Tasks, Among The Missing, Snowblood and Red Right Hand earlier. Agent of The Morai were solid stonery sludge with a definite Iron Monkey influence, good performance for a first gig. RSP I missed because I was talking to a couple of guys downstairs (and I've seen them a huge number of times, so missing an RSP set isn't a huge deal), and Bendal Interlude didn't do much for me so I popped back downstairs. EDT had to play without their bassist so sounded a little odd without the low-end, but their new material sounds great and Jamie's use of some pitch-shifted vocals worked out really well. He also threw himself into it more than I've ever seen him do before, crashing into the crowd and writhing on the floor. Among The Missing were easily the most fun band of the night, ripping out a mix of hardcore, sludge and metal with a damn good sense of humour.
Snowblood were where things got really interesting though. I don't think they played anything from their first album, it was all new material presumably from their upcoming new one. Intense, textured and very moving, shifting from quiet post-rock territory to crushing grooves and shredding screams, with Peet of Red Right Hand joining in on vocals for the last track. Very uplifting and exhilarating, but Red Right Hand put paid to all that. They battered the crowd with their brutal droning doom, it was like being slowly beaten with a lead pipe. Even with earplugs the noise was almost unbearable by the end. Draining in its power, and the perfect bleak accompaniment to Snowblood's more hopeful take on things.
Best gig I've seen in quite some time.
KharBevNor:
System of a Down supported by the 80's Matchbox B-Line Disaster.
I'll give 80MBLD their due, they're better live than they are on CD. Still not overly keen on them though I must say.
As for System, fuck pretenses at not being a poser, I loved it. I was very into System 'back in the day', their brand of heavy guitar, Grrring and slightly hard to interpret political lyrics are tailored to wanky 14 year old socialists just getting into hard rock. I haven't got the new album, though I have heard it, so not all the songs were familiar with me, but I was slightly suprised to notice that, though I hardly ever listen to them now, I still new all the words to their old songs.
Quality nostalgia.
StupidityKills:
The Rakes, last set a Dot to Dot festival in Nottingham this weekend.
The best thing about DTD, apart from the bands, was Stu, who I'd introduced to QC turning up in his TEH t-shirt and saying someone had recognised it as QC. Awesome :)
yipjumpmusic:
Some "show" (more like coffee shop acts in a bar) nearby put on by a person wanting to find someone for their band but also just hosting for anyone to join up together which seemed like a good idea...if anyone would come...some people came not many...she played and was okay, singing with her acoustic guitar, but so so straight forward lyrics which are rarely acceptable to me and mostly so so music. Next girl did not sing and only played guitar and was amazing...she played songs where you would swear it could not just be her playing. There was some other band after that but me and my friend had enough so we left. This "show" was called bandwriter's night where, as i said, people get together who want to be in a band...well it happens once a month but I think I won't go again. Meh.
