Yeah, but when I see an artist crank like that, I ask myself this question, which in Jeph's case would be phrased thus:

"Did that take him 30 seconds -- or eight years?"

Blender to model it and Luxrender to render it. I've got myself a new computer that has a halfway-decent processor and graphics card so I can render things out before the Sun explodes.

I've been meaning to try to learn how to do modeling in Blender, but haven't gotten around to it. I use POV-Ray quite a bit, though.

I've been teaching myself Blender for a while, but the learning curve is very steep. I am impressed with that jet-engine/ducted fan thing; I have not attempted anything of such complexity yet.

It isn't actually that bad. It's a deformed cylinder - I can't remember how I did it, I think I added a two-loop cut around the long faces which I scaled up a bit and then subsurfed. The red cap is the front of that cylinder clipped off and retextured. The central lump is a sphere that's been scaled along only one axis. The fan vanes are twisted planes that I put a 0.5 cm solidify modifier on and then duplicated.

If you want complexity, try looking over here, although that's a good recipe for just getting demoralised and giving up.

EDIT: A bit of progress, though not as much as I'd have liked...

A weekly newspaper cover I did a few months back, introducing a series of stories about a "pop culture private eye." The editor wanted the, ahem, main elements of the composition but told me to "go nuts" with the pop culture references crowding the private eye's office. Note the homage in the upper left, just behind Marvin.

I enjoy the skill Jeph shows with the balance between character types.
Newest example being this AR AI girl. To me she seems to oppose Momo. (Like designs, completely different personalities)

absolutely. has the feel of a late night walk, either on the way home from the coffee shop after closing up or just out with Angus.

The hair, those eyes (!) and that full mouth - you really captured her.

And you certainly captured what Angus, and probably Marten, saw in her...

I agree, Carl. It raises an interesting question: Is it possible for an artist to draw a character so realistically yet adoringly that it appears to be 'shipping?
