My Friend is a Metalhead...
KharBevNor:
Building on my last post, Acid Bath seem quite compatable with new-metal sensibilities: Grunge/goth influenced sludge. Get him to listen to 'Paegan Terrorism Tactics'. If he likes Slayer, then he should be able to take other thrash bands: Stormtroopers of Death would probably appeal to him, old Metallica's a safe bet too, maybe some of the old thrash giants: Exodus, Kreator and the lesser known but fucking awesome Tankard. Get him into the softer end of the extreme as a stepping stone: MDM bands like the aforementioned Dark Tranquillity, In Flames (He'll like the new album almost certainly, then you can work back), Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom*, Soilwork, maybe At The Gates, Opeth* and Edge of Sanity. Symphonic/Gothic black metal too: Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir are the best known (again, you can start on the latest albums and work back to earlier, superior material) but there's loads of others, often better, that'll appeal of he likes those: Illnath, Hecate Enthroned, Gloomy Grim and Limbonic Art and Cryptic Wintermoon** are some good suggestions, In the Black Metal realm as well you might want to consider proto-BM like Mercyful Fate (and descendant King Diamond), Venom etc. , as well as more punky/rock influenced BM bands such as Carpathian Forest, Abigail and Treblinka***. There are the classics of hard rock and metal of course: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, Motorhead, AC/DC and so forth: plus modern descendents like 3 Inches of Blood, Dream Evil, Viking Skull, etc. and Melo-doom/stoner bands like Candlemass and Orange Goblin (candlemass will be good if he's an angsty cunt: Make him listen to 'Solitude' before he burns all his Slipknot CDs: My Dying Bride are in a similiar vein). NIN suggests a liking for Industrial rock...get him into Rammstein, Ministry, KMFDM and Hanzel Und Gretyl. The Decemberists are touch folky aren't they? Folk metal his ass! Finntroll, Skyclad, Waylander, Korpiklaani etc. may be too bizarre for him, or may be his groove. Speaking of groove, there's some pretty accessible groove-based Death Metal: I would suggest Grave, Dismember and Vital Remains personally, as well as some new Death 'n Roll Entombed.
Should be enough to be getting on with...
Also, gentlemen, it takes many a Jack and Coke before I get to the stage I was at last night. I drank about half a large bottle, some vodka and goodness knows how much cider (I remember vaguely swigging from a 2 and a half litre bottle of strongbow like it was lemonade: I think I may have drunk all if it).
*Not technically MDM but we're not here to debate genre semantics.
**Again, not really symph black, but...well, you know the score.
***Obscure as fuck so don't search too hard.

- Slipknot - Quite possibly the single most hated band among cult metal fans, that said I don't mind them too much - I don't take most of what they did seriously, but I kind of dig their noisier moments and rhythm section. Slipknot fans who enjoy more than just their latest album may also be in with a shot of digging extreme metal and modern hardcore. Try Cryptopsy for starters. Maybe Carcass (Necrotism: Descanting The Insalubrious).
- System Of A Down - See above. If he likes more melodic nu-metal as well, Dark Tranquillity's Projector is worth the risk. Kind of like a metal Depeche Mode... Their new album Character is OK too, although Projector has some clean vocals unlike the all-growling Character.
- Slayer - Are great, as a thrash band I don't see anything wrong with 'em. Maybe try to get him into some of the 80s hardcore punk bands that influenced Slayer such as Minor Threat, and thrash that emerged later such as S.O.D. (Stormtroopers Of Death - Speak English Or Die). Celtic Frost were another thrash metal band, but with a bit of an experimental streak and more cult appeal. Morbid Tales anyone?
- Bright Eyes - I don't like Bright Eyes, and I really don't like the album Digital Ash In A Digital Urn, however on Digital Ash... they touch on a kind of music/mood that I often enjoy in what I do listen to. For more synth-driven music with simple rhythms and affected vocals try early Death In June (The Guilty Have No Pride, NADA!), the darker side of The Legendary Pink Dots (Asylum), and Tears For Fears (their first album, The Hurting). For more acoustic music by song-writers try The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, Songs Of Leonard Cohen, and Current 93's Thunder Perfect Mind and you're off to a decent start with pretty obvious choices.
- Nine Inch Nails - I always liked them, they were one of my favourite bands back when I was just getting into music, but there is so much other music that one can get into through this group. Depeche Mode undoubtedly had a big influence on the early NIN sound, as is evident on Pretty Hate Machine - Violator is a safe bet, though obvious, if he hasn't heard that album already. Skinny Puppy's Cleanse Fold And Manipulate, Coil's Horse Rotorvator, and Ministry's The Land Of Rape And Honey are all essential 80s industrial/industrial metal albums that should be explored. As far as goth or goth-ish music is concerned, 90s Swans (The Great Annihilator) and The Virgin Prunes (If I Die, I Die) should also be investigated.
DeathrockZombie:
Dude, this Hectorbitch knows his shit!
The Swans and Virgin Prunes are both great!
Johnny C:
That Lincoln Park band is pretty cool.
ForteBass:
Howabout that Corn band? Or that Puddle of Mud? I hear Limp Biscuits used to be pretty rad.
