Okay, so... inspired by the fact I'm having to repeatedly beat my wireless mouse against the desk just to get it to respond... what's the worse piece of hardware you ever bought for your computer, and why... I'm not talking defective cards that made the whole thing explode, I'm talking upgrades that made your computer-using life a living hell.

Case in point, my wireless keyboard and mouse that my mum bought me to replace my old and defective mouse. Now I'm stuck with a keyboard where the keys sometimes 'stick' - which obviously plays hell with first person games - and a mouse that refuses to respond at times.

Hardware?....not really anything defective about it...software..WINDOWS...oh wait nm I didn't buy it..I got it from my dads work when it went out of business.

The only thing that my computer has that is retarded is my MB....i buy a brand new MB and chip...the chips FSB is too fast and there isn't a new bios for the board so it recognizes my chip as a 1.6ghz duron when booting but it reports that it is a 1.2ghz athlon because it has the same fsb as an athlon.

My CD-drive clicks every 3.4 seconds, regardless of whether or not there is a disc in there.

Gets a leeetle annoying.

that slogan is a good slogan. so good, in fact, I think it should be applied to other things. like, "there's no wrong way to hit your spouse." or "there's no wrong way to commit nonconsentual sodomy."

Don't you get cordless mice with that you re-charge on a dock?

I like my Dell laptop (it's fast and whatnot) but there have been a few little problems with it.  First, the battery died about two months after I bought it.  You know how hard it is to get Dell to ship things up to Baffin Island?  Nearly impossible.  Second, the DVD+/-RW failed after about 18 months.  I didn't really use it, either, which made it sad.  The last (and the biggest) problem with the Dell 600m is...  Heat!  The thing has some serious heat issues.  Dell released a BIOS that underclocked and underpowered everything to "fix" this, but that's about it.  I spent a wad of cash for fast and light, and then you try to fuck me up the ass by underclocking it?  Please.  I just keep it away from my body.  Yay tables and trays and magazines.  :p

Oh, boy. I'm on a Dell laptop right now.

It regularly overheats(I have a program to manually regulate its fans now just in the hope I can keep it going), loses half its RAM whenever it shuts down, requiring it to be off for 24 hours before it'll have full RAM again, I'm on my third power cord and it's starting to break, the batteyr light is constantly blinking FOR NO GOOD REASON, and, all in all, is a piece of junk.

Joy.

Id have to say my cheap dvd burner. It has an interesting (fucking annoying) habbit of reading the last disk that was in it even if its empty...

Like i will have the matrix in and swap it for say.. star wars but oh no it still sees matrix untill i refresh it like 10 times or wait 5 mins. My fault for getting a cheap ass one i guess...

I have the same overheating problem with my dell 600. I use two old checkbooks over the hot spots so that I can do my writing, otherwise my wrists get so uncomfortable with the heat. (Yes i have very poor typing posture)

I have also had trouble with the disk drive, it tends to scratch discs, although not as bad as the dell desktop my family has.

A Logitech joystick (meant for flight simulators and such).  I figured I could replace my WASD setup on the keyboard with a really nice ($90) joystick, for playing Call of Duty, MOH:AA, etc.

I tried, and tried, and tried... but I cannot get the hang of using it, and I always went back to the WASD after dying a dozen times.  I finally just gave up, and realized that it really is only going to be good for mech/flight/simulator games... genres which I don't indulge in.  It now sits on the top of my desk, gathering dust.

I bought a new sound card once that broke the CD-ROM. Years ago. All I wanted to do was hear the damn music in Diablo, but no. It was play silent or not at all with that piece of crap.

Good sound card, too. Just never goddamn worked. There went $80 wasted. And before anyone wonders, (A) I really sucked at fixing hardware issues back then, but (B) my best friend didn'y and he couldn't fix it either. But we did so try.

Not so much 'worst purchase ever', but just a really bad run of luck.  Video card just fried in one of my servers, firewall HD crashed, HD crashed in my file server, HD crashed in the source repo server, etc, etc.  I just want to chuck all of my hardware out and pick some new stuff up that won't fail miserably.

Best?

This (EASILY!!!):

For all your PC FPS gaming needs!  Also works incredibly well for any other 3D games (City of Heroes, Guild Wars, World of Warcraft, etc).

This thing is AWESOME!

Aye, I've seen those before (though nobody I know owns one).  They look nice, i only wish I had enough free time to justify the purchase.

edit: any idea on how the linux support for it is?

I dunno if it's best/worst anything, but my MX1000 Logitech mouse is pretty slick. Wireless, great reception, and it's precise enough that it feels not like moving a mouse moving a cursor, but moving the cursor directly. Also those Belkin Speedpads are great--I have the n50 and it kicks WoWs ass in every way.

I don't know if I've ever bought anyghing _bad_ per se. Most of my stuff I'm pretty happy with, or I didn't pay for it in the first place...

Best/worst could also be my dual AMD system.  Hella powerful, but AMD stopped supporting their MP processors pretty quickly.  Fuckers.

I like my MX1000/QcK Steel+ pad.  Huge mat, covers 1/4 of my desk.

My 16x CD burner from a few years ago warms up whenever I put a disc in. It has been mistaken for a jet flying too low over our house.

My computer has seperate drives for Burning/Playing, but the burning drive runs at only about 16x, while my brother's (only one drive that's reserved for both playing/burning) goes up to around 48x or so.

This is my Compaq compared to his Dell.

Curses! That darn slacker teenager was right! Dude, I DID get a Dell, and I'm happy. :P

Meh.  My computer was built from scratch, by ordering the parts I wanted through a local retailer.

4 years later, it's still more powerful than the computers of friends/family/coleagues.

P4 2.6 GHZ, 1024 DDR Ram, 256 Meg video card, CD/DVD rom (48x/8x), CD Burner (48x read/write), 40 gig HD.

I put my current big blue box together two years ago, just after I got back from Iqaluit.  P4 3.0, 2GB DDR400, 2*120 (RAID 0), Radeon 9800XT, 8x DVD+/-RW, 16X DVD-ROM, Audigy 2.  Want to replace it soon, though goddamn CPUs are still in flux.
