Outshined:
*cough*  I wouldn't call it power metal, but I've found Opeth to be a very solid, well balanced, and musically elegant introduction into the metal genre.  I'm not big on metal myself, so I can recommend it to someone just getting into the genre with confidence that it will probably appeal to you if you approach it with an open mind, because it did to me.

Hmmm...  I'm a bit curious if you enjoy grunge-era music?  I see Pearl Jam is in your list.

Nah I'm not really into grunge. I think Ten is the only grunge album I respect and enjoy.

Hmm which Opeth albums should I specifically check out? I have a few friends who listen to Opeth but the stuff they've shown me I never got into. What's their most accessible album?

Robbo:
The most accessible...probably Damnation. But that's an all soft 70's Prog Rock style album and not like the rest of their stuff.
Probably Blackwater Park I guess for a first time listener.

And get listening to that Power Metal as well, it's good stuff. Good job there are some Metalheads around for such things you know.

JLM:
quick question: How important is it to you that bands sing in english?

Initially, I'd probably recommend Muse based on what you have on your list, but looking at your Audioscrobbler I see Sondre Lerche coming up in your top 20.  I'd check out The Delgados; you might like them.

The Smashing Pumpkins, I don't like.

I have to agree with all the anti-smashing pumpkins sentiment .... but i think it's my hatred of billy corgan's whiny voice; perhaps if they had another singer i might like them (and they possibly might even sound half decent) and being on topic....

Try some Hot Hot Heat!
