My wife really loves watching me play games. Maybe this is why I call it true love

. I've been slowly leading her a bit into gaming herself but she has a strong feeling against violent games. So! I'm trying to find games that she'd really like. As of right now we have Super Mario Sunshine(a bit too difficult for her after the first few "missions") Super Monkey Ball 2(frustrates her to no end but she still plays from time to time) and Animal Crossing (If she had a baby she'd call it Animal Crossing).

I'm looking for any suggestions of non-violent, preferably non-mission based, open direction(no direct path from point A to Point END), and most of all FUN! games. So far I've heard Sims 2 and .... (dammit. I always forget this ones name. You're a farmer and you buy cows and chickens and take care of the farmland yadda yadda).

Anything else you guys can think of?

farming = harvest moon?
Sim city is non-violent-ish

I wouldn't really recommend Harvest Moon. It's fun at first, but it get really repetitive really fast. Think about the life of a farmer; pretty repetitive, huh?

My girlfriend loves pinball games, and there are a couple good ones for PS2. You might also consider Space Channel 5 or Taiko Drum Master. I actually have a huge list of off-beat/non-violent PS2 games; my main hobby is collecting obscure videogames (I troll used game racks like a hipster in a record store.) If you want me to send you the list, PM me.

Incidentally, what systems do you have? Just a Gamecube? Because I'm mostly just familiar with PS2 games.

If you've got a PS2, I'd recommend Katamari Damacy. The Mario Party games are good, non violent multiplayer games for GameCube.

Duh, how could I forget Katamari? I know multiple people who purchased a PS2 specifically for that game.

Sorry, I shoulda mentioned what systems I have. PS2 and Gamecube... and a buttload of older systems but we'll stick with newer stuff as she has developed a disliking of anything pixely

Paper Mario: The Thousand year Door - Simple RPG style gameplay, and not too violent (about the same level as Super Mario Sunshine). She might enjoy this game.

If you're want a colorful, fun sports game, I recommend Soccer Slam. It's available for both PS2 and Gamecube, although most people say the GC version is better.

I have paper mario. She thinks it's "another one of those sit and do nothing games. OOH! I select 'kick his ass' from a menu! FUN! :p" I really tried to get her to play it. Ah well, she had enough fun watching me play GTA: San Andreas and being a backseat gamer. "Ooh! shoot her she looks rich!" etc etc

So far Sims 2 and Katamari Dimaci are highest rated by you guys and the real flesh and blood people I know. KD being 1/4 the price is kinda swaying my choice a little unfairly

That reminds me. If you think she'd be interested in a game about skateboarding, check out Yanya Caballista. It's a cel-shaded game on PS2. It's definitely not for everyone, but I like it a lot.

if you get harvest moon, a game i STRONGLY recommend
i had to just as strongly recommend that you do NOT get the completely horrible ps2 veresion, but rather the much better gc version....

theyre not the same game at all.

Ah, well that makes a huge difference for Harvest Moon. I played the PS2 version and wasn't very imressed(I got addicted to the SNES version). I'll look into the GC version now

Yes, Tony Hawk games are good. Get Tony Hawks Pro Skater 4. It's the best in the series (in my ever so humble opinion) and it's probably dirt cheap by now.

I have Tony Hawk 4 already. She just likes to make version of herself and everyone she knows, doesn't actually play the game though.

URG!!! Okay, the avatar thing, NOT SERIOUS! That whole side-conversation was completely not a serious issue. I love avatars! But to think that you recognize someone by a strange name(come on, twentyfour? Who names their child that?) and strange/silly/cool pictures(a looping gif of Ronald Reagan thumping himself in the head with his fist). Ya gotta admit that it's kinda silly to recognize someone by a pic of a small stick-child torn in half or a looping anim of a clown vomiting(I'd post this pic but It's pretty gross).

We're all good now? Cool. I'm gonna go change my avatar to my Pintsize in a apeedo animation so people will take me less seriously

I didn't realize the GC version is significantly different. My recommendation against was based on the PS2 version; I'll have to try Harvest Moon on Gamecube.

With regard avatars, I assume most everyone was kidding. Isn't that always how it is in forums? One person makes a joke, other people carry it too far.

I debated how to answer for a while. The "honestly" was the deciding factor in how serious some people were taking this.

Maybe I should make a thread where people can post their favourite avatars they've found. There's some awesome ones out there

c.b.steve: I knew pretty much everyone(if not everyone) was, the "honestly" made me kinda concerned about where this topic was headed so I thought I'd cover my ass and kill it before someone read everything the wrong way and the thread gets locked because it turned into a defend/re-explain marathon.

So, I'm gonna rent Katamari this weekend hopefully. Gotta spend the week cleaning and working late because my boss doesn't know how to schedule properly(i.e. took the in office crew tubing down a river on the weekend when we're a week behind schedule because he triple booked :p). I'll letcha know if she likes KD! Thanks for the suggestions!

You can egt a lot of crafting in early. It only took me about an hour to get my Mining+Engineering up to the 100+ levels.

It's kind of a brick wall at that point because you have to venture into higher level areas.

It's basically like Dance Dance Revolution, but with bongos and a gorilla in a tie...

Sims 2 gets my vote. Also, consider pointing her in the direction of "Psychonauts" maybe?

D'oh. Probably would have noticed 'cept for the fact that lack of sleep had me feeling as if I had been three sheets to the wind.

How is either game? I've only played around with the demo of Donkey Konga and haven't played Taiko Drum Master.

24, is she into puzzle games? I think there is a Puyopop game for the Cube plus I know there is a Tetris game for PS2.

She seems to like anything really open to you doing whatever you want rather than a series of challenges, that said, she just fell in love with DDR yesterday... maybe puzzles and music based games are the way to go?

Ummm, If she doesnt mind playing thinking, story games, i suggest you get the Moneky Island series...1-3 (i havent played four) On 1 and 2 the graphics are old....frankly cause the game is old but the gameplay is too great to pass up.

Also, Zork Nemesis and Zork Grand Inquisitor. Thinking games again like monkey island, but look a bit better.

The above games are favourites of myself and my mother so i reckon there safe for gamers and non gamers alike.

Maybe SSX3. It's fairly open-ended for a snowboarding game - you can just board down the entire mountain without racing if you feel like it - and it's non-violent, looks pretty and is lots of fun to play.

You could maybe try Ape Escape, too. It's not too hard and pretty cute.

If you were getting harvest moon, I'd say neither PS2 or GC, but get the 64 version.
But either way, you didn't mention 64 in your list, so I'll just say that the PS2 version is definitely my favorite of the two.
Katamari Damacy is a yes.
Does she like to sing?
If so, Try Karaoke revolution

3 is my favorite so far, because you can play duets... It's fantastic when a large chunk of your friends are tone deaf.

Amplitude/frequency are great games, (I think you said she likes DDR?) they're pretty similar, except not... and much less exhausting.

Is she dead-set against violence, or is it just for major violence? because she should give Zelda: windwaker a try.

Trying to think of more videogames that are non-violent but still good.
Jak and Daxter: the precurser legacy is fun, if slightly violent.
