What should i get?
« on: 26 Jun 2005, 18:28 »

I'm looking to get a new machine as my old one died in the ass recently and i'm wondering if i should get an A64 3800+ or wait a little and go for a dual core A64 X2 4400+

I have all the other components worked out so this is really the only thing i have left.

The rest will be
Asus A8N-SLI deluxe
2 gig twinX corsair c2
200gig sata II Western digital
BFG 7800GTX OC PCI express
550 watt Antec Truepower2 EPS 12V

I'm making use of my old cd burner and dvd drive as well as the lianli case that i have

Any ideas anyone? Please?

Well, if you have money to burn (and by the looks of the other stuff you've got in there you have) I'd wait and get the dual core. I don't know how much of a performance increase you'd get but it'd sound hardcore and get you heaps of geek points. Judging by the Corsair ram that's what you're after isn't it?

[edit] I might have been a bit harsh in my branding you there but I'll leave my comment to cause discussion.

I think you're right. I wouldn't buy a dual core right now. I am building a new system too, and dual core is + geek points, - not supported, + performance, - Not as good as it will be.

Future proofing requires dual core. Useability of the now does not.

+performance is not correct, crazybritishsteve.
+performance only if the software is written to use several cores, wich most of the software isnt... and i think, the money you spend on a dual core system is better spent on a single core with fast memory and a fast mainboard...

You are, of course, correct. It should have been +performance (possibly)

And i did say i'd go for the single core. So :P

EDIT: I am having a bad word day. You know that thing you have to do with letters to make them words. Spelling.

if you're buying a gaming rig then don't shell out the extra cash for the dual-core.  it doesn't help, unless you're going to be ripping divx files or something in the background.  dual-core doesn't mean "twice as fast", it just means that it can go just as fast in two apps/games at once.

also, of all the games around at the moment only BF2 needs anything near to 2gb ram, and that's only because they do absolutely shitty things technology-wise.

the trick with cpus (and to some extent, also graphics cards) is to do your own home work.  checkout the benchmarks and review sites and compare performance vs $$$, and i'm sure that you'll find that the current pricepoint is sitting at around the Athlon 64 3200/3400.  i don't know exactly how it is in the US, but for example: the jump from 3000 Venice to 3200 non-venice 939 and from there to 3200 Venice over here are both about $35.  then there's a $30 drop to the 3400 754, or $100 up to the 3500 939 (Venice).  that $100 jump is the point where the price:performance ratio starts to taper off, and you have to look at it and decide how much you're willing to pay in order to have a few more frames per second.

Probably should have pointed out that i am in Australia. I am looking at dual core as i intend to have this machine for a while and futureproofing is something i'm looking at.

The 2 gig of ram i already have because ram was really cheap and didn't really want to have to pay heaps when it went back up.
