Saw them/her supporting Modest Mouse supporting Bright Eyes last year. Wasn't too impressed but the sound levels were bad for the support-support. Like what I've heard since. And ya, kewt.

Some people seem to think that Rilo Kiley are not "indie" enough to be cool (or is it cool enough to be indie? I don't know), but I think they just write really good pop songs. I like them.

That's something i like about England/where i live. There is no real indie scene in the same way as in America. If i find a band i like within the wide genre of indie, my friends are generally not aware of them or the scene in general. So I have no real perception of what's too hip or too scene etc. I'm able to go about my buisness without having preconceptions about a band.

To me, all indie music is as indie as the rest!

It's fairly similar in New Zealand, I guess. I just have a few friends who can be elitist bastards sometimes (not that I don't love them for it). Personally I prefer to take the route of "if it sounds good, I don't care who else likes it".

For instance, I fucking love the new Snoop Dogg/Justin Timberlake song "Signs". How indie is that?

Does anyone know whether these guys are any good live? 'cos they're playing London next week and i need to know whether it's worth:
1) parting with my cash that i so desperately need to buy myself a new computer.
2) wandering through camden, london on a tuesday night on my own, bearing in mind i'm a skinny, small 16 year old guy who's like a glowing beacon for any muggers to come and kick the crap outa me or murder me on the tube.

I like 'em , but are they any good live?

Where about do you live in England? Because there are a hell of a lot of hipsters around Leeds, and definitely an indie scene.

Aha. I live in Gravesend, Kent -The scummy u-bend of England. I mean there is a kind-of scene, in that all the kids who think they're the only people who have ever listened to alternative music cram into an underage pub on a friday nights. But those morons are easy enough to avoid. But it's not like there's anyone I know that I could go "Hey, like the new Arcade Fire/Shins/ Rilo Kiley album?" to.

Maybe I just lead a sheltered life, but i kinda prefer it this way. I can hop on the train to london and go see a band, and all the scene kids are there, but then i go back home and it's nothing but Akon ringtones at 50 paces. I might live in a town of morons, but at least i can listen to music and know that i enjoy it based on my own preferences, rather than worry about whether my tastes are being led by some kind of scene.

Until I turn the internet on, that is.

I've never heard them live, but if you use metacrawler (http://www.metacrawler.com) and search for "Portions For Foxes", there's one of them playing it live. I'll never get to hear them live, most likely, just 'cause I live in the ass-end of nowhere Nova Scotia.

There's a bit of a scene here, not much though. I'm usually the one going to the local cd plus and getting their only copy of certain music. (I.E. They only get sent one...) This has happened with Feist, Tegan and Sara, and now Rilo Kiley. I've been waiting for three weeks now, getting much impatient.

Three of their vids are on Yahoo Launch... the Unipines in "It's a Hit" are hella cute.

I have two recordings of them live, and they sound great.
They also do some cool covers ("Simply Irresistable", "Rock N' Roll Suicide").

And "With Arms Outstretched" is meant to be played live. It's the perfect song for audience participation.

Not a fan. Something about them and The Decemberists strike me as bland/muddy/boring.

Mabe I need to listen to them again.

Oh, as for Jenny Lewis...

I'd hit that. ;D

I heard "Portions For Foxes" the other day in a local beer garden after a Lil' Jon song.  It scared the hell outta me for a second!

Plus, I watched the videos for the More Adventurous hits, and I thought that Jenny would be hotter.  Maybe I'm picky.

a few friends of mine have been into Rilo Kiley for years, but I never paid too much attention to them. However, Elvis Costello recently paid them some high praise, so NOW i'm interested in them.

I've never seen them full band, I saw Jenny and Blake do an acoustic set in Chicago once, and to my memory it was really good, but it was just before I got really inbto them, so I only have a firm recollection of the songs I knew at the time.  If it says anything, the live gig got me wayyy more into them.  Hopefully that helps.

Yeah, I saw that Costello comp of "Artists Picks" or whatever... had all these famous and classic artists, i.e. Aretha Franklin, The Who, etc., then sticking their noses in were R.K.  I was very pleased.

I like Rilo Kiley - I wish Blake would sing more as Jenny Lewis seems to be a bit Norah Jones-y at times on the new stuff.

And my mate offered me a ticket to that RK gig in london. but was too poor to go. grr

I am kind of not as into Rilo Kiley as I used to be. I don't know, More Adventurous isn't doing it for me like "Take off and landings" and The Execution of all things did. And When I saw them last, I don't know - it just seemed not as good as they had been in past shows. I mean, I still like a lot of what they did in MA - a couple of the songs are sure brilliance, but the album as a whole isn't as good as I had hoped it would be.
Just the two cents of a wannabe music critic.
