My friendly neighbourhood spider..blog, Engadget, recommends that I hold out til the Autumn,  when it's expected Apple are gonna unveil a more radical change to the ipod range, ala Ipod Photo last year. I'm guessing natual progression is bluetooth headphones, radio scanner and video playback. And probably an upgrade to 80GB.

There won't be a G5 power/iBook. Main reasons why:

1.) The G5 is so big, and produces so much heat that there is no way it could ever be made into a laptop.

2.) They wouldn't come out with a totally new line right before they make the switch to Intel processors. It would make no sense to buy one.

Yeah, I think one of the main reasons they're switching to Intel is that IBM wasn't really interested in making a G5 they could put in a laptop.

I can't see why this wouldn't be a good time to buy. If Apple was going to release a new model, they would have done so at WWDC. So you're probably safe for now.

Ideally, you'd want to pick a new Intel 'Book up when they come out, but that's still a year away. If you can't wait, this seems like an okay time to buy.

I bought a Zen Xtra. 220 bucks for 30 gigs, great sound quality, pretty sturdy,  and so far I've had no battery issues, which was supposedly a problem with the ipods. Alot of people complain about both the interface and the size of the thing. It's damned easy to work, so I don't know what the hell those guys were talking about, and it's not like it's so big it doesn't fit in your pocket, unless you're a silly hipster and wear tight girl pants. Then go with your fashion accesorry scene-points+5 ipod.

but the music sucks because the keyboards don't have the cold/mechanical sound they had but a wannabe techno sound that it's pathetic for Rammstein standars.

The best thing about the "new" iPods is that the price of the old 30gb iPod photo is dropping.  I'm seriously considering picking one up.  Does't cost much more than the current 20 gig model so why not?

I have a 20GB 4G iPod and it's anything but fragile - It's banged around in my pockets a lot and survived the heat of a closed up van (100°F+). The battery life isn't an issue either, in fact if I didn't know better the battery life has been increasing with more use. Go figure.

I don't know what everyone's beef with the iPod is.  I've had mine since January now, and it's been fucking awesome.  Yay for the creative Zen nomad or whatever, but I don't think it's probably any better or any worse than the iPod.

Ooh im sorry, I prefer the zen touch be cause it uses mp3 files where as Ipod need to convert their file types to make it Ipod Compatable, thus degrading audio quality. Similar to tony products.

I Dispised the 8 hour battery life on the Ipod but i think the LATEST one is 12. Where as my Touch is 24 but ive managed to get it up for 29, apparently it depends on the bit rate of the song you play, i usually play mine at 192kbps.

I thought the menu on them were the same tho.
The Zen has two power ports, one being usb like the Ipod And a standard power jack sockets so you dont need to plug it into a pc to charge it!

Whereas the Ipod you gotta go splash out some more money to get a universal batterypack or main's power adaptor (although i do admit the zen is a annoying with out a uni battpack but the batts never died on me yet... only when i left it switched on playin in my draw)

You don't have to convert files to play on an iPod... I play mp3s on it all the time.  Most of my cds are ripped into .m4u format though.

And you're worried about degrading the audio quality, yet you're listening to mp3s?  That's a bit odd.

My iPod came with a wall-plug charger...

funny story, and why I <3 apple.

FIRST NIGHT I had my iPod, I accidentally set it to Chinese and I hadn't had the chance to look at the menus or anything yet.  And I don't read Chinese.  I checked the little iPod book and there it was, the heading "In case you accidentally set your iPod to another language"

i donno why im defending ipod, but do you really need that many hours of battery life?  i gues sits convenient for some but i just plug mine in every night.

speaking of plugging in, it comes with a wall adapter thing.

I bought a 30 gig photo about 3 weeks ago. I got fed up when my brother deleted an entire 6 gigs of my music to make room for his shitty "sim park" and "sim coaster" and "sim janitor" bootleg pack, so after beating him profusely (and laughing when the games wouldnt run,) i bought an ipod to store all my music. I had a 265 meg player before, but it was horrible. The 30 gig is a good deal now, since its dropping in price, and still plenty big enough. Also, i dont see why people have problems charging things. You plug one end into the wall socket, and the other end into the ipod. E. Z.
